  1. Trust many Shetland folk having a party tonight. Glasgow had one at 5pm, and there are others all over the country.
  2. Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron. Dwight D. Eisenhower, From a speech before the American Society of Newspaper Editors, April 16, 1953 Interesting comment from a Republican President in 1953. He was very aware and worried by the power of the military/industrial complex even then, and his ideas have proved to be so correct. The most powerful country in the world is ruled by that military/industrial complex.
  3. Memories of Clive's peery early shop at the South end of Commercial Street. I was in one day looking for "something" and asked him for advice. He asked if I had seen Mary Black on Ally Bain a few days before. This is prob 25 or 30 years ago. I had seen the show and thought she was brilliant singing "Nadine". He had the CD and a fan for born. He also introduced me to Nancy Griffiths. Another great artist. The shop and the advice will be sorely missed.
  4. Annoyed like others by the poor picture quality of STV. But how do you find out what frequency the "other channel" is on, on Sky.
  5. On BBC news at 1 and also 6, mention of Western Isles petrol supplier who has reduced prices by 9p per ltr. The owner says he can do this becuase he has switched supplier. I thought Highland Fuels had a monopoly in the Western Isles as well as Shetland. Not much details in the BBC report, but hope someone in Shetland is following this up. I still think the best solution is for the Council to buy in bulk and ship up, but probably rules against them doing that.
  6. Thanks to Shetland peat and Hectors House. Solved the problem of the filing cabinet. Next time your are in Glasgow, I will get you a pint.
  7. Anyone know how to remove drawers from a wood type two drawer filing cabinet. With the old metal ones there were two catches underneath the drawers at the back which released them. With this wood effect cabinet there seems to be no catches and I just cant work out how to solve the prob. Purchased from Beam on the Hillhead perhaps 20 years ago.
  8. You are not stuck with the Hydro in Shetland. You can go on to any of the comparison websites, and receive quotes from several different companies. I did that in Shetland about 7 years ago, and saved a lot.
  9. What is Twitter. I keep hearing about it but dont really know what it is. Is it a email or phone based contact system. Is it only limited to 16 words?
  10. Coverage on BBC of a truck hanging off the back end of a ro ro ferry between Belfast and Stranraer. Thought they were regulations to stop this kind of thing. Hope Northlink are taking note as it must have safety implications for all ferries. If it had been a rough day could have been a disaster.
  11. BBC Sport is saying that Colin Calderwood has been appointed as a coach with Newcastle till the end of the season. Dont know if he can do both jobs at same time, or if one of the stories is wrong.
  12. SAD not confined to Shetland. Had some experience these last two years and bought a light for about £80. I think it helped but I just made sure I got out for a walk in daylight each day, and that seemed to fix. I know the Shetland weather does not lend itslelf to walks every day, so I would encourage you to get a light, and use it when walking is not an option. Good luck.
  13. Can remember getting Kessington cake or Kensington cake (i think) usually round Christmas time. Yellow cake full of fruit. Gorgeous! Not seen it for a few years. It only seemed to appear at Christmas time.
  14. I can strongly recommend the Lerwick Baptist Church. Good people, and great music.
  15. My grandad came from Wester Quarff. When this was mentioned when I was a peerie boy, Wester Quarff was always followed by "the valley of the dry bones". I know there is something in the Bible about dry bones, but wondered if anyone knew why Wester Quarff had this title.
