  1. Yes, that is likely true enough.  So savings would be fuel, maybe some wages? Would agree with you about a bridge having to shut occasionally with the wind but  I wonder how likely it is that a tunnel would flood?

  2.  in any case, a ferry and all the shoreside facilities will need to still be provided and maintained even if a fixed link exists, as they're needed for backup for when the fixed link isn't usable.

Really?  If that is the case, why is there no backup ferry between Lerwick and Scalloway for when they are painting lines on the road at the brig o fitch?

  3. possibly this story?

Windhouse in Mid Yell was built in 1801 on the site of a previous house. It was always said to be haunted and things were heard going up and down the stairs. The servants were aware of forms passing them on the stairs and some were very frightened. The Spence family who owned the house were plagued by the deaths of three children on consecutive Christmases. The fourth year they decided to spend Christmas with cousins in Mid Yell. As they prepared to leave, they heard a knock and found a shipwrecked mariner at the door.

The Spences fed and watered the man and told him of the fate of the children. The man didn't believe in the haunting and decided to stay in the house. They showed him where there was a great eetch [adze] for chopping wood that he could use as a weapon. At midnight a roar came about the house, it darkened inside, and the house shook. The man grabbed the eetch and threw it at a black lump, which fell into a heap of blubber on the ground. He told the people he'd killed the trow [troll, fairy] and it was buried at the head of the voe in Mid Yell, where the grass is still green.

  4. I don't think it will happen.

Otherwise all and sundry would be able to go back and chop out posts where they got something wrong/made and ass of themselves etc.

The whole forum would then be littered with the unintelligible bare bones of threads - it would be like reading a book where someone has ripped out random pages.

In ye goode olde days it was possible to delete and edit to your hearts content but I think the delete function was disabled for the reason you point out.  I see the edit post function is still available, (but it has a time limit on it now)

  5. You're obviously very easily satisfied if you call one word an adequate answer as to why WS has pulled a stunt like that. Add to that his "answer" was one word in a sentence that carried on pushing Westlake on an unrelated matter.

She asked if there had been a poll of members.  There are only two answers to that question, "yes" or "no" and John Tulloch answered "No"  (Twice)  Whereas Amanda did not answer his question at all.

  6. Pretty sure the Sale Room is not closing. They have been given notice to move out of their current premises next year but are looking for new premises to keep it going. Can't find anything on their facebook page to confirm that though.

That is what they said on Radio Shetland last week, they are in the current premises until March.

    Not just haaaard.  Impossible.

Whenever somebody with a decent grasp of maths and physics looks into the idea of a fully renewables-powered civilised future for the human race with a reasonably open mind, they normally come to the conclusion that it simply isn't feasible. Merely generating the relatively small proportion of our energy that we consume today in the form of electricity is already an insuperably difficult task for renewables: generating huge amounts more on top to carry out the tasks we do today using fossil-fuelled heat isn't even vaguely plausible.

It seems that reality has proven you wrong:

Great news, but reality has proved me right!  Uraguay already produced 60% of its electricity from hydroelectric, & there are not many countries where that is the case.  Also, the guardian link you posted says "There is still a lot to do. The transport sector still depends on oil (which accounts for 45% of the total energy mix)"

Let me know when that 45% reality has changed.

    Oh dear.

Don't you just hate it when the consensual scientists become non-consensual. Politically (and financially) motivated scientists, fuelling the needs of politicians.

There is a lot of practical sense in trying to reduce emissions and protect the environment. There is also a lot of completely valueless rhetoric and political investment behind the current attempts to make a difference. India is dramatically increasing its coal fired electric generating capacity, and if you've ever been to China, well what can you say? Indonesia is burning itself up, and has had a direct and very local impact on its neighbours for decades now.

Without bringing everyone to action, you are simply pi55ing in the wind! With subjective and politically motivated "scientific" analysis and facts being delivered and adjusted to meet the agenda, there will never be a credible advancement toward a measurable decline in global emissions, which is a goal I can certainly support without the politics involved.

The most interesting local development is all the third world nations who are choking in self generated pollution, and are making no attempt to reduce their own emissions, but are lining up at the door with their hands out looking for cash to mitigate the effects of climate change!

Waaaah! Waaah!  Fixing Climate Change is haaaard. So we should do nothing.

Just another piece of fossil fuel funded propoganda. It will be ignored, as it should.

    Not just haaaard.  Impossible.

  9. @ Capeesh - Readily available to whom?  Those without the internet?

Wasn't this the first time Skene stood for Shetland & Orkney?  For a fair comparison, some might put forward the argument that you'd need to know what both candidates put out in their election campaign leaflets when they stood for the first time as candidates for this constituency (not just the last election); after all, Carmichael was previously known to many given he was the existing MP whereas Skene wasn't (and some might argue, still isn't) known to many.

So, I'm assuming Alastair publicised his schooling, religious beliefs etc in his first ever election literature?  Can you confirm that he did?  Otherwise, he too (by your logic) will be a LIAR BY OMISSION, as well as being an actual liar.

  10. "we are quite simply far too many people for this small planet to feed. We cannot carry on like this, it is completely unsustainable.

    Think about it!"

There is plenty of food.  More than enough to feed everybody in the world.  It is just poorly distributed.
