I remember re-visiting Whalsay about 6-7 years ago, and my eldest disappearing with da eens he'd been at nursery with (they were about ten by then) - came back late at night with a belly-ache and said they'd been neeping. I thought it had died out - but not in Whalsa' !

Also a newcomer to this board (and also stumbled on it through trying to get more news of Sandy). However, I know him and family, and lived on Unst for a long while. To the other questioners - the Police do this kind of thing a lot. Believe me, they have asked all the right questions, and more. I think we can only hope and pray for a conclusion of some kind, to put the family and community out of its misery. Endless speculation is a very human response to a mystery, and a kind of displacement activity for grief, but it's not helpful.

I spent a great chunk of my working life in Shetland, and my bairrrns were born there and are fiercely "Shetlandistic" - but I now live 8,000 km away, and this board is making me very nostalgic. Can I be an honorary Shetland expat?
