Stena Carron protest in Shetland - Greenpeace Esperanza
bug replied to jetsam's topic in Shetland News
The boat isna moving so the photo was taken before she steamed. You don't stop boats that size for "a few minutes" - they take a cople of hundred metres or more to ease up methinks - the mariners will clarify,- 342 replies

To put a bit of context on that ^^. The GOM sheen is reported to be c. 40 million gallons, the Braer spill was about 29 million gallons. St. Ninian's Isle beach, slestered in oil from the Braer in '93, has just been voted the "best beach"...Conclusion....Dinna fesh deesel.- 342 replies

Talpa - fear not. Offshore drilling has been going on around our shores in the UKCS (United Kingdom Continental Shelf) for over 50 years now, and rarely has their been any problems with pollution. Like GR says above, most of the tarry balls sometimes appearing on beaches are either wreck related or a throwback to the World Wars - fact. There have been some significant oil exploitation incidents and disasters over that 50 year period including some that have resulted, sadly, in loss of life. These include the Piper Alpha blowout when 167 people perished and of course the Braer grounding near Quendale, Shetland, in 1993. However the current Greenpeace (GP) protest has nothing to do with any of those events. GP appear to be primarily concerned with jumping on the media bandwagon kicked off by the alledged GOM "disaster" (that in reality is peanuts compared to the aforementioned).- 342 replies

^ I would not worry about loss of control. If (and it's a very big if) all the ships systems broke down and a gale was ensuing and the lives of 100+ souls onboard the vessel were at any risk whatsoever then the Master would quite justifiably drop all anchors if that was what was required. No doubt the GP campers are fully aware of this and as such they have made their choice.- 342 replies

You make a very salient point GB-c - the very fact that this vessel is specifically designed to hold station whilst attached to a deepwater well in the North Atlantic makes it highly unlikely that a mere gale would drive her ashore on Bressay. The Master of the SC should invite GP onboard for a cup of coffee and some cake - offer them much more comfortable free bed and board for a month and of course make damn sure the cordial hospitality is videoed by Malcolm Younger et al.- 342 replies

KTL - I think you don't quite understand that there was not a lot of pumping involved in that incident - a blow out from a reservoir is somewhat different from what you insinuate.- 342 replies

Aberdeen Airport to Northlink Ferry Terminal
bug replied to Patzel's topic in Travel / visitors advice
I meant as a chain, not as an individual store - that's why I wrote 'do' rather than 'does'. For existence of Tesco in Lerwick - see 76-page thread under 'Supermarkets, ethics thereof etc...' Presto Supermarkets (as a Brand) became defunct in 1998. Sudocrem as a brand is alive and kicking in Tescos tonight. The poster Patzel was looking for Sudocrem - not Prestos methinks? ... and just to get nearly back on topic . There's a Tescos about 2 minutes walk from the Dyce Railway Station (and it's on the way to the Airport so you pass it OR if you're travelling to the station from the Airport you pass it - win - win -
Aberdeen Airport to Northlink Ferry Terminal
bug replied to Patzel's topic in Travel / visitors advice
I meant, you know, anywhere here - it doesn't need to be Presto. Do Presto still exist? There was loads of the stuff in Tescos (LK) today - from the handbag size tubs up to the huge (must be c. 1 litre) tubs.... .......and getting back on topic - the Aberdeen to Dyce train journey is a bargain at £1.20 single - The bus between Dyce Station and the Airport is £1.50 (need the correct change ready) - Taxi from Aberdeen to Airport will cost you about £17 and generally takes longer due to traffic. -
Propane is a LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) so I don't fully understand what you are attempting. Butane is also classed as a LPG. If you are currently using Propane what are you trying to convert to? If the cooker has been set up for North Sea Gas (Methane\Ethane) as is the grid piped system on the mainland then you may need to convert the burners to handle the bottled Propane we have is Shetalnd.

Just out of interest Madfish - How did you manage to analyse the gut content of the char you have seen without actually gutting the fish ( or causing it some serious discomfort prior to release) or is is there a digital camera on the market for this sort of thing?

Good luck tae dee bouy - I've never seen a Fully Qualified Professional Dolphin in all the years I've been here .... and meeting someone who trains them is an even more exciting prospect

From the outset of this thread there seems to be a presumption that the police were "parked" in the exit from Petersons site (da cattle grid) and aspiring to catch "speeders". However, if they were infact waiting to pull out and enter the lane of traffic, and had espied the truck, van, car et. al. traversing down the hill, they would quite correctly have stayed put until it was appropriate for them to proceed to enter the "highway".

There is indeed Arctic Char in the loch. I have a photo of one taken on a ordinary fly rod about 20 years ago at da side away fae the road. It couldna be returned to the water because it was "foul hooked" and widna have survived the return so got the opportunity to see it. Weighed about 10-12 oz. edit - unless that was the last one in the loch of course

Modern art pipe near Lerwick Hotel?
bug replied to DizzyKipper's topic in Anything & Everything Else
Think it's the Shetland Hotel you are referring to on the way to LBC. The "art" is as GR said called a "christmas tree" typically used on offshore rigs. This one is a mock up "pretend one" rather than an actual one and it has nothing to do with Sullom Voe - although the pipes and valves used to make it may have been left over from the construction era. This link will help explain - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_tree_(oil_well) -
Get her to look for Perrier water - Low pH of 5.46. Bottled in France and an international brand easily recognised in it's distinctive gereen bottle liverey.
