  1. Rob, alas you are not the first or last one that will end up in this predicament. I let my property to someone a while ago (after spending a couple of hundred quid at the solicitors getting all the tennancy agreement contracts etc in place - which the tennants happily signed). 4 months later and the contract wasn't worth the paper it was printed on. They did a runner owing me rent (and damages) and basically that was that. Unless I pursued the ******* through civil action (at a "sausage" load more expense to me) then there was nothing else to do but live and learn and be very very careful who you let to in the future. You are correct in avoiding naming and shaming on this or any other online forum - but by gowd you can certainly get the word of mouth going in the local pub so the scum that ripped you off become known far and wide.
  2. ^ Hi Zebbidy - Just ran superantispyware and ...bingo...back to normal..... Many thanks for a quick response.
  3. HELP please Sorry if this is off the thread above but a shortcut to a bank I have been using for years (the nbank and the shorcut) has just been blocked as a "Phishing Site" by a page that appears called openDNS and there seems to be no way of getting to where I want to go even typing the kosher address in manually. The "opendns" website invites me to enter my details if I consider the bank site as ok. I have refrained from doing that for obvious reasons. As a test I tried access from a different pc and got in as usual. Any of you pc savvi people out there got any suggestions? cheers
  4. Hi Lizzie, welcome to da forum. From the posts so far you'll already have gathered that Shetland is a place of variety both in attitudes and experiences. It is however a wonderful microcosm of all things involving both human nature and Mama-nature..... from the local plonkie to the "local" volcano, sublime weather to awesome storms etc. EM touches on the extremes that people in Shetland can encounter. That wide spectrum is precisely why this place rocks (we call it the Auld Rock for a reason). From an employment perspective you and your partner should be fine - the NHS are always on the look out for staff and Total are building a Gas Plant at Sullom over the next couple of years and Steel Erectors will be sought after for sure. Get you and your family up here pronto and enjoy. You can always move on later.
  5. Allegedly, Gordie Brown has been quoted as saying to his cabinet "don't worry too much about this volcanic ash problem because it will all blow over shortly", Dave Cameron has told his party "that people will just have to go with the pyroclastic flow" and Nicky Clegg has told Tav and Ali that if the direction of the wind changes they "have to change with it".
  6. ^ That would have been the Clair flight (West Side) that landed back at Scatsta about 8pm. There's still a couple of East side choppers in the air. See the link I posted at the top of this page for live updates.
  7. Bristows Helicopters have flights shown from Scatsta tonight See http://www.bristowgroup.com/resources/flight_stat.php
  8. Go straight across road from the boat - through the carpark and into the Union Centre - take a right and window shop all the way to the station. - can't miss it.
  9. It's fast approaching the time (and high time too) that the "street" shops go "up market" and start stocking high quality, relatively high priced, and "designer" label type goods instead of trying to compete with the discount stores with their veritable trash. The free market will sort everything out. Then we should have a choice like - 10 t-shirts for a tenner that last 1 wash each or 1 t-shirt for £50 that will outlast a fashion cycle. The street retailers should forget the "have nots" and aim to draw their income from the "have loads". As a case in point look at the new Union Centre in Aberdeen. (The adjoining Jury Inn hotel has so many Shetlanders staying in at weekends that it's like going to the street anyway!!) Not the cheapest place to go around with a trolley but you do get quality and they are not interested in competing with the Primarks and Tescos of this world. They offer people with a few bob an alternative.
  10. Yun wife should have taken da opportunity to empty her car ashtrays at the same time - wid have been a bargain den. 200+ fag butts for the same cost as wan
  11. GR - I really really do agree with you 100,000,000,000.0012326126 % - honest guv. (sic)
  12. I tink JAS took da "SH" da soond lik da "F" and - I dinna tink ders a link tae dat in Shetlink yet - AT might differ
  13. The 200m margin for roads is complete nonsense. If it were real, then almost every road in rural Shetland would pass through a blasted wasteland (as Tolkein would have put it). They don't. Next time you are in Lerwick, take a look at the Ward of Bressay, the hill with the TV masts on it. You see the road running up to the masts? According to "sustainable" Shetland there should be devastation for 200 metres either side of that road. The thing is, that hill is about 200m high, so the devastation should be equal to the height of the hill on either side of the road. Do you see it? Below is a photo to illustrate my point: http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r60/ArabiaTerra/2009_07300036.jpg Everything on the "sustainable" Shetland website is dedicated to the cause of stopping all commercial windfarm development, anywhere in Shetland, at all costs. Their entire website is biased towards this aim I'll take that bet. £1000 ok? PM me and I'll tell you who to make the cheque out to. In case you haven't noticed, the Total plant is for processing fossil fuels. Even if it didn't disturb a single gram of peat, it's carbon cost will be huge. Oh, and according to "sustainable" Shetlands Billy Fox, you are not allowed to measure carbon cost only against coal fired power stations. You must use the average carbon intensity of the entire British power industry. This includes hydro, nuclear and already existing windfarms, all of which are carbon neutral. That's the standard "sustainable" Shetland insist on holding VE to (You see now why I consider "sustainable" Shetland biased). The information on the degradation of the peat in the windfarm site is in the VE EIA. It is also clearly visible on the aerial photos on the Microsoft equivalent of Google Earth. See here. Oh dear....... - AT, that is a Shet photograph you posted - you should have posted one of Billy F's = far more resolution, clearer, shows things "as it is", far more perspective, depth of field etc. Perhaps you should reconsider your position too - seems to be very very narrow - wider angled views can capture far more.
  14. Do - take a HUGE step back. Don't - step forward. Do - buy the T-shirt from someone who has one. Don't - Take advise from someone who hasn't got the T-shirt
  15. A friend (humbly) recommended a company called Specsavers for you Ghostrider Another (more cynical friend) rubbed her hands together and whispered "Ahh Bisto) Another (more Musical friend called Johnny) - you may remember his mam , Mrs Cash sang - " I hear that train a'comin'". Fleabee - start printin' the t-shirts
  16. Ha Ha GR - worms and cans - Shetlink thrives on them - mind you on a more serious note Fleabea has a point - We have the T-shirt).
  17. Windy, what da helly is do spikkin aboot - da Toon Up-Helly-Aa is year round - last year's Jarls squad have already handed over the responsibilty of being the front squad to next years squad and they are makkin the suits now. (an there's mony a non-Lerwegian amongst them). If doo thinks that the Tuesday procession is the start and finish o it then do definately lives on a con-CLOOD
  18. The priveteers will flourish - start doing up your oothooses noo.
  19. So not quite made the century yet - na na na na na nah - sadly Colin you forgot to count yourself - It does happen occasionally. (even on Eurovision Song contest counts) so hold your head up high (at least above the high water mark)
  20. ^^,^ T & JO'N - your response gladdens me - I thought I was the only one that thought this portrayal of war and suffering was absolute pish. Hollywood should stick to ScFi (Avitar, Bambi and musicals to name a few) - "Reality" is a "whole different ball game" (to coin an ubiquitious americanised phrase) {War is no f**cken game} - . Sh*t..... the purveyors of these films ( and the proponents to them) should be sent to the "front" as it is now.
  21. M in M - I couldn't agree more - "da coming back o da sun" is a reason for everyone in Shetland to celebrate and ALL the UHAs/Fire Festivals are akin to that.
  22. Watched "The Hurt Locker" last night and can't see why it should have attracted so many Academy Awards. The direction and cinematography did attempt to be "realistic" but it doesn't nearly reach the Slumdog Millionaire/Saving Private Ryan quality.
  23. Given that the NVA and the "reds" were primarily supported by the USSR (who had a developed nuclear arsenal at that time) but chose not to deploy them Evil Is point is very valid. Proliferation was probably the fear. 1945 was all one sided and 2-300 thousand people were annihalated atomically. The NVA didn't need nuclear because they were fighting at home. They couldn't have used nuclear missiles at home for a paltry 200 thousand Americans without untold destruction of their homeland and the USSR weren't "officially" in the war so they couldn't nuke the USA using intercontinental missiles. A no win situation from a nuclear standpoint. A costly non-nuclear conlict ensued. How do you define "large scale" ? The Vietnam War lasted 17 years, and cost the lives of 3 to 4 million Vietnamese, 1.5 to 2 million Laotians and Cambodians, and 58,159 U.S. soldiers (thank you, Wikipedia!). Obviously, neither the NVA, nor the Viet Cong, were deterred by the USA's nuclear arsenal. Oops, I should have stated large scale conflict between nuclear weapon possessing states.
  24. I just read this in the Shetland news: Cold weather contingencies LOCAL MP Alistair Carmichael has joined the call for an urgent review of cold weather contingency planning after new figures revealed the enormous cost of the recent wintry spell. Small and medium sized businesses were hit to the tune of £7.3 billion by the recent snow, according to new research. Mr Carmichael said: “The extent of the disruption that the recent period of bad weather caused for businesses across the northern isles was severe. Local efforts to cope with the snow were hampered by the failure of the UK and Scottish governments to put adequate contingency plans in place to provide sufficient salt supplies.†Surely this just means that, we, the consumers, just still have £7.3 billion in our pockets that we will choose to transfer to the business men when we see fit.
