  1. Mental??? - you're on the right track..... Oops.... just joking.
  2. SUBliminal messages. Don't you just love them. They deliver wherever whenever whatever whoever.
  3. Shetland_boys you do write nonsense: Of course it's possible to get a place of your own. Turd areas have been specifically set aside for some. A lot of turd seems to follow some about. I take it your business does not invole turd - you seem to have recognised a potential niche in the market - make hay. You can move south. Life south is certainly cheap. Odd houses are cheap too. Change your name to EXshetland_boys and you should/could/will do well.
  4. I wouldn't worry too much about mobile phone use by drivers - they are in a minority. Take a vantage point (Commercial Road was mentioned above) then count the phone users versus the number of drivers picking their noses totally oblivious to everything going on around them - in a wee picky world of their own. Should this not also be banned?
  5. Surely by being asked to leave due to being judged too noisy is treating your child exactly the same as any other 3 year old would be treated so helping you achieve the normal a life you desire - the alternative would be positive discrimination rather than the norm?
  6. I tend to agree with Ally on this. The way the Sun article reads tends to infer that there was straight arm waving finger pointing gestures delivered in the chamber whereas the literal meaning of the particular phrase mentioned is "Yes my leader". Doesn't quite have the same connotations when not delivered in the German language I agree but surely hardly newsworthy and an over reaction to a schoolboyish jape delivered no doubt tongue in cheek by JW at a most inapproriate juncture. He was being stupid and insensitive and thus was right to retract the statement when censured by his colleagues and perhaps should have delivered the same phrase in swahili or esperanto instead?
  7. I reckon anyone exceeding 20mph when the orange lights are flashing (even if the ones on the sign out of LK warning drivers are faulty) are on a sticky wicket in court because there is a flashing light above the crossing point at the school entrance. This is for the benefit of those drivers that enter the area without driving past a warning sign, Upper Baila, the Blydoit road, the Westerloch houses, Baila and of couse the school and hall itself. As for timing the Hi-Vis jacket worn by the lollipop lady is a pretty good clue that bairns are out and about.
  8. ^ ha ha - easy & simple mistake by the guys putting the signs up. They're fairly hard to read when you're working with them. I would imagine a half a day will see them swapped over.
  9. So many "whys" above. Let turdland be that bit different. Invite (or insist) that wir local "problem" dealers set up a stall on da esplanade during the tall ships to sell all their wares so that the world can see that we are truly cosmolpolitan and we accept EVERYONE. If you want turd then turdland is the place to come. Be proud the fact that we can adapt to all comers. Calling our friends "Druggies"or "Wasters" is certainly not the answer. It sounds too much like "Da Baptists" , "Da Methodists, Da Barstewards, Dem damn Clapp Happy's, Da Fuzz, Da Community Wardens, Da Weather, Dat Damn Ash Clood, etc. Get a grip
  10. If the Lochside facility is closed and the aforementioned alternative drop off points are unavailable surely the best alternative to avoid an accident (or indeed an emergency) is that handy facility a mere 200 yards up the road. You'll find the Gilbert Bain Hospital A&E department is open 24/7 and is very adept at dealing with all sorts of slester.
  11. It's a sad state of affairs when the pro-VE faction (Bert Morrison of Bigton et al) are now attempting to justify the planned man-made desecration of another part of the planet (the Shetland Island's part) on the back of the recent event pertaining in this thread. http://www.shetland-news.co.uk/2011/March/letters/Not%20so%20bad%20after%20all.htm Will the VE windfarm now be redesigned to be earthquake-proof?
  12. No heard "shu hed a fis lik a skelpiterse" as in " was showing slight signs of embarrassment" for a long while.
  13. Folks with a better memory than me will hopefully correct this - but if I remember rightly there used to be a Hostel in town used for the purpose of housing needy people in the early stages of getting accommodation away from families or on arrival on the isles. It was the Staney Hill Hostel out the old North Road and seemed to be a good half way house for individuals wanting to move on. ( a relative of mine stayed there for quite some time) I think this hostel was originally built as temporary accommodation for people working at Sullom Voe Terminal. Now my point - surely as a Policy - the SIC should insist that the new "camp" being built at Scatsta/Sella Ness for the temporary Total Gas Plant construction is of a design and quality, that when construction/commissioning of the new plant is complete, it can be used by the community as accommodation for those needing help to get "settled". Any thoughts out there? edit - p.s. as another addendum policy - When the said camp is vacated by the Total construction workforce the Company should be requested to employ some of the needy local people who will occupy the "hostel" afterwards. (Instead of it being left in the same state that Firth and Toft Camps ended up in)
  14. Regarding budget cuts - I suggest an immediate ban on all overtime (emergencies & statutory exempt of course). No more routine time and a half or double bubble for any council employees forthwith. It'll hit hard on the council employees wagepackets and the receivers of their services (us) and will not be popular with anyone - but it is a cutback that's easy to implement and measure. What think you?
  15. Please be aware that all the money spent on this is straight from the taxpayers pocket (some of us still pay it) and it matters not a jot if it's referred to as SIC money or CT money or Government money or EU money or World Bank money. It's the working mans contribution to the cyclic shift of funds. I know most workers would rather use their earnings on other things but tax is tax and the contributors have little control on how it's channelled.
  16. Best solution is to avoid producing ANY waste oil at all by cooking with pure beef dripping - never needs recycling. "Veggies" should give it a try too - it's a by-product in the same vein as leather.
  17. Paulb you haven't made it clear whether your daughter was buying a takeaway or "sitting in". If it was the former then she should go back and ask for a refund of the difference.
  18. Well done pb and Mods - I applaud that course of action.
  19. With that in mind can doo tell me precisely whar Grola is so I can avoid it next time I'm aff in da punt. I'm ne'r heard o' da place.
  20. Sorry for being so ignorant.. but what's a Soda Stream?
  21. calm down guys - this was a likely "response" written from the perspective of the "in power" shiny rst people SP was suggesting we write to. I respect your rancour and apologise for any upset I may have caused.
  22. Is this surreptitious spam or a genuine call to arms?
  23. I would say that yes, you are quite wrong - Braer - 85,000 tonnes of oil spilt Anglian Sovereign - 84 tonnes of fuel spilt. Slight difference me thinks Certainly tonne quantity wise I agree. Scunneration quotiont? Some would say the Braer was a godsend
  24. Post Script - if I may Whisky Galore. (great story/film) If it washes ashore you can guarentee us islanders will make best use of it
