  1. Dear god you lot love to moan!!! I bet there isnt all that much trouble, are you sure you dont FEEL intimidated due to the sheer number of unknowns rather than them doing anything to intimidate you? Besides theres a good chance its only a few folk causing trouble and probalby the same people causing trouble every time. So if the police cant help you? you already said shetland has enough violent people already you know you could just take said trouble makers outside and leather them
  2. Ahhhh here we go again, in the last 5 years ive seen so many threads decend into moomin for tat sh1te, "dus a wank, naw dus a wank" Council houses, there isnt enough of them ... and theres hardly any in lerwick that are going to come up. we could build some more in an ideal world, maybe we could use the land currently occpied by the high school to build a brand new scheme of houses and flats for couples families and the elderly? yeah im not holding my breath either. The way of the welfare state is the most in need get priority and yes this leaves the system open to abuse but just mind you dont know how someone got to be in such a situation where they became drug addicts or long term unemployed. besides the people who do screw the system dont get that much, dole money is crap and is only much good if you like sitting in front of the telly exisiting, not living. that is not what most people want in life And dont be so quick to knock where youre tax money is going, you could all end up in a care home when yer auld an pishin yer breeks. how many people have half a dozen sheep calll themselves crofters and take there non means tested subsidy even tho they have full time jobs, its all money that has to come from somewhere!
  3. SSE are a gas company as well so it may be worth their while? Also if they can run the power station from gas piped from Sullom then maybe the district heating plant can be run cheaper using that gas as well – yes/no? Yes true but the cost of installing a domestic network to homes and buisneses is far to high as apposed to a single pipeline to a power station, district heating may be cheaper but nice idea gas central heating is a very nice phantasy which just isnt going to happen, lerwick sized settlements in the central belt dont have domestic gas if they're to far off the beaten track im afraid
  4. No gas company will go to all that expense for 9000 odd customers, would be nice to have but isnt a realistic prospect
  5. It's not the SIC'S job to create a comunity spirit in rural shetland, nor is it their job to hold the hands of all 22 thousand residents from cradle to grave, there are some things you need to do on youre own, golf clubs, country halls, highspeed broadband you name it. not suitable for public subsidy IMO. I do not support one political party or another. I don't support utterly ruthless cuts but by the same token i believe endless subsidy is just a long walk to bankruptcy. and i'm sorry shelties but when it comes to grabbing the bull by the horns you're the worlds worst for not making tough decisions, not wanting to be unpopular, not wanting youre comunity to be the one without a school (yes i'm looking at you "half our bairns already get driven to mid yell by their mithers" buravoe!) No one likes these things becuase there not nice but niether is running out of money completely or having a goverment appointed comisioner instead of local control. One last note; an (old) man i once worked with from mossbank said he was so glad his parents had sent him to the anderson instead of brea as he grew up knowing many times more people and was tought by many more teachers than he ever would have at brae. possibly not 100% relevent to the schools facing the chop but is it not surely better having at least some veriety growing up rather than being in the same class as all the way through from 1 -7.
  6. Well sp the thing is they needn't bother IMO in the eyes of shetlinkers or even shetland as a whole no one will ever do a good job at running the north boat, no one. lets be ohnest about northlink; The boats are clean, the staff are decent. they have free sky tv in the bar the seats and cabins are comfortable , they are never normaly full, they run on schedule most of the time and arent that expensive ( a 3 hour crossing from stranraer to belfast for 1 car and 2 people was 370 pounds return). Despite all that they'r the 2nd most hated organisation in shetland (no one comes close to the council obv) they'v had it all from "the boats are useless" da auld boat wid aa geed in dis" and "its aa dem scottys in da snp wit haes it in for wis dey hate shetland" why would serco be any different. why even worry what the public think makes the service better all it will do is make some people even more resentfull after all if they're not p&o taking 5 days to sail via stromness then they must be sh1te. but you could go into stromness and have a pint and a bag of chips in da gud old days
  7. Are you sure you haven't just heard that the way you wanted so you could have a whinge and a greet with the usual "dem sooth eens niver listen ta wis" crap
  8. maybe in the short term yes but longer term gas is much cheaper than oil and nothing like the transport costs. a new powerstation somewhere near graven and mossbank only needs a short pipeline as opposed to a 30 miler to lerwick.
  9. Hello there fellas(and laddies) long time no see. replied to this topic to clear up a couple of things . As someone already says gas flared at sullom voe is there as a pilot light, unless youre in africa or some dodgy corrupt place (no pun intended) flares are a safety system to get rid of gas in a hurry not to get rid of unwanted gas. the svt power station has 4 (originally 5 ) 25 megawatt gas turbines which run on gas recovered from oil and west of shetland gas and diesel as a back up. in practice 2 of these run at a time but one would handle the site load since the terminal of today doesnt typicaly have more than 3/4 heavy power usesing machines running at once There is however enough gas at the existing sullom bp plant to run 3 turbines (all 4 cant be run at once) with enough generating capacity to power the whole of shetland aswell as the terminal but the power lines are not able to handle all of this at once and would require significant upgrade. sounds simple doesnt it? Well thats where youd be wrong, even the simplest jobs in the real world are rediculously complex in the oil industry. The first sign of trouble and the terminal cuts of the domestic grid to save its own plant. more so however was the decision by bp to contract out the running of the power station to a 3rd party fortuum some years back and i dont have enough all year to bother explaining the politics involved here in summing up games a bogie on that front. Total might be different but i dont think they will be. laying pipelines is expensive and not worth the investment for an island power station which will be a small user in the grand scale of thigs. Any potential new powerstation will likely be at sullom voe or there abouts. with the infratructure upgraded accordingly. i wouldnt even bother thinking of domestic gas mains on the isles. costs too much, not enough profit and the gas , untreated is full of hydrogen sulphide at levels far too dangerous for domestic use. Hope you all enjoyed youre lesson in oil and gas tonight as much as i'm enjoying the idea of the reels turning in the head of a certain bearded man as he trys to figure out m,y real identity. Cheerio
  10. prison food isnt all that bad you know i once went to a charity bbq where all the grub was provided by prison service kitchens, lovely stuff big burgers that would cost a fortune in the butchers big juicy chickens and all sorts, now hospital food on the other hand thats what you might come to expect on the boat in future. seriously tho how do you know they wont be any use just becuase youve heard the name? the staff will al be transfered over. serco will effectively become just management seeking to streamline the costs and improve service and increase passanger & commercial traffic numbers whats wrong with that? Or are we doing that typical shetland thing of having a bloody good moan about everything and anything? remeber northlink where the ones you loved to hate!
  11. Seriously can there not be one single thing happening in shetland without people whinging there arses of about it either go and enjoy youreself of dont its a free country (well at least on paper)
  12. myth - something while widely believed to be true, is false. boys and girls please stop this nonesense and myths before they spread like wildfire Petrol and deisel are made in the same crude oil refineries. so is youre heating oil and youre bottles of calor gas and the heavy oil which fuels youre larger ships and the jet fuel for youre aeroplanes, garages are selling petrol cheaper becuase there has been a missive drop im demand in the last 10 years as more people switch to diesel but since most british refineries were built in the 1960's theyre set up to make much more petrol than diesel. supply and demand. secondly A local authority WILL NOT AND IS NOt PERMITTED TO buy fuel to sell to local traders at a discount therefor undercutting the private sector distributers using public funds no chance ever maggie thatcher would take on a new lease of life fly out of her nursing home and boot the arses of the sic herself. as for build a micro refinery? sorry but you obviously have no idea what youre talking about. even a small 20 thousand barrel a day number would still cost 10s of millions of pounds need several dangerous chemicals shiped up and require almost as many staff as sullom voe currently employs whats more it is not economicly viable or bp would consider it. without a full refinery operation with a number of plants youd need to pay comanys a fortune for blending stock and to remove youre residual waste products. sorry to ruin the dream folks but im afraid we live on an island, we just have to pay island prices. ps a mate of mine from home works for gb oils. we spoke in the pub at christmass he said gb oils like all small companys rip of rural areas becuase they can but the OFT sided with them becuase they are not preventing any other company from doing the same and competing with them. if there was so much profit theyd all be here
  13. sure its not the kids fault or most of the adults either but this has to happen maybe not exactly this scinario but one similar accross the whole sic, lets be brutaly ohnest for a minuit, ive been here 6 years and have seen a few campaigns to keep schools open for emotionoal reasons only and if some of them involved were realy ohnest with themselves they'd realise this too. The sad fact of the matter is shetland has been running on a gravy train for the last 35 years thats almot longer than most have lasted anywhere and its running out, you cant just keep spending to keep the people in the lifestyle to shich theyve become acustomed to its not sustainable! no one is going to wave a magic wand and get all youre oil funds back you used them to top up anual budgets like a teenager raiding his savings to go for a night on the p1ss( the council that is) I read an article from shetland life dated 1986 which was concerned even then about the amount of oil revenue being wasted on crap yet it would seem in the 20 years since then no one paid a blind bit of attention to that fella. Now the moneys rapidly drieing up no one complained when the times were good and it seemed like a bottomless pit so it looks like youve maid youre bed and youre going to have to lie in it or keep digging youre heels resisting change and theyl be no money left and not too many people either id imagin
  14. Well if thats want you want you need to ask for it and i mean realy ask with a political body who will stand in elections publish campaign material and attempt to get the whole of the shetland population on board this is what the snp done with scotland they were a nothing party until 1970. Devolution for shetland can only happen with a referendum and yes everyone currently elegible to vote in uk elections will have a vote just as english welsh and northern irish will have if there is a referendum on scottish independence I dont trust the men in grey suits but il bet they dont read shetlink and they wont offer it if they arent aware of the desire, remeber you have for 60 years returned a pro union westminster party with massive majoritys doesnt exactly scream home rule from the outside looking in.
  15. well sir i realy dont much like the EU either or the snp for that matter i do like independent scotland but not the way the snp would have us do it. I dont know anything about the fishing industry so i wont bother commenting on the CFP I would just like to know where you think this scottish vendetta against shetland is coming from and give me some examples (i'm sure theres some) Do keep in mind tho and this goes for ghosty aswell you will always get the rich "elite" who take anything they get there hands on by fair or foul in any society it would be the same under denmark and norway who both have royal families lords earls etc etc in any case all those evil scots who done these acts are almost certainly all dead now as are the shetlanders who experienced them! The last 30 years of immense prosperity and very low unemployment hasnt done much to take the chip off some peoples shoulder there are many who see the scots how the irish view the english yet in both cases its not the 99% of scots/ english people who are like this view you hold. Finaly scots were horrible to other scots aswell! a few wealthy men decided there was more profit in keeping sheep on the land than people there for the people were chucked off which we today call the highland clearances. Still if you feel shetland is singled out by the entity that is scotland for the worst of all treatment then could you tell me of this as im very much interested in history and would like to learn more.
  16. Shetland is part of scotland untill it is legaly declared otherwise but in all ohnesty the talk of scotland is pointless realy! scotland is not a soverign state the scots parliament has very few real powers not a great deal more than local govs have in other countries and its only been around for 12 years so who was shafting shetland for the other 290 of those years? Go it alone if you want or stay with UK or come with scotland but dont sit and blame all youre ills on "da scottys" when its realy sausage all to do with them! there is no conspiricy against shetland youre the richest most spoilt county in britian youre own elected members consistantly let you down yet you still vote them in A bad workman allways blames his tools
  17. Yeah strange to find that 25% of abusers are female, more so an interesting fact is that 75% of abusers were themselves abused at one time so preventing now will also prevent in the future
  18. You know i remeber it must have been about 10 years ago when the sun done there 3 week rampage on printing the names adresses and photographs of every convicted sex offender in the uk, campaigning for sarahs law blah blah of coarse as we all know the sun talk p1sh half the time and some of the names and adresses were compleetly wrong and normal families were living in houses, AND every night for about 2 weeks the ITN news had storys of mobs particularly in pauls grove estate in portsmouth, people going round harrasing people vandalising property and a particular memory of a fat women going round in her dressing gown and slippers swearing all night long all that for an adress in a tabloid that turned out to be wrong and the police were nowhere to be seen! Now i dont imagin anything like that would happen in shetland but in shetland news travels fast and roumers spread very easily so would it not be better if people KNEW from OFFICIAL SOURCES who was and wasnt rather than ASSUMED from roumer and hearsay? Like i say there probably wouldnt be house burnings but there could be a cold shoulder in the comunity, refused service in shops pubs etc no comunity involvement at all- fair enough if youre convicted of an offense but a bit harsh if its all from a sweety wifes roumer
  19. and dartsy im no longer going to argue with you because youre a lumpsooker younker with a sharn attatude and youve had far more of my attention than you deserve, all the best shetlink
  20. well this will get me barred but i diny care ive read enough of the bile that get spewed towards incomers on this forum by a vocal minority, wake up this happens everywhere immigrents are always an easy target to blame for all youre social ills, a man once said to me in a complaining tone that his doughter was the only one in her school with shetland connection the rest were aw sooth folk not real shetlanders, never mind the fact if it wasnt for them you wouldnt have a school or alot of the things in fact if you took all the immigrants out of shetland just how many people will you be left with?
  21. would you support him if he crashed his van into youre car making it a write off and injuring youreself and members of youre family? no insurence no money you loose youre excess and no claims while he bangs on about beating the system? aye nae bother calamity, i agree with his vision but the methods are counter productive
  22. 5 years residency is standard in most western countries for non nationals with all corect visas to apply for citizenship (right to vote) of coarse dartsy could always take the japanese approach - youre japanese if born to a japanese father, if youre dad wasnt and his dad wasnt and his dad wasnt..... generation over many years can be born live in and die in japan without ever being a citezen is that what you want,? this is our island our gang and youre no allowed in?
  23. yep hit the nail on the head, personaly id make a maybe one or two allowances eg if a person is going south for a pre determained period of time but if they have another house in the area then no, no chance
  24. doesnt seem to work was meant to be a bit of fun sorry folks
