  1. so despite all the debate coop in scalloway and sandwick it is
  2. i cant see how aldi or lidl would have any problem competing with tesco if they where right next door look at the kantar world panel data tesco have consistently lost market share for the last 5 years and aldi and lidl have grown constantly and most of there sites are within close proximity of supermarkets also the only other chain growing is the coop who are without a doubt building in sandwick and scalloway
  3. generally aldi and lidl tend to feed of supermarkets there strategy is to be as close as possible hence the one in orkney that is next door to tesco and the coop
  4. From Who? Would make more sense to put it in a more central location, In or Between Lerwick and Scalloway would be good for foot traffic but they would want business from those who live on the smaller islands too so being near the ferry’s for smaller islands is something they would want. Sandwick is a short drive down from Lerwick but you want to be as close to your more far flung customers as possible so they are more likely to bother and there are more populated islands in the north Fill up the car and go back to the home on smaller island or make deals with more remote shops to stock own brand goods, I see Iceland and Co-Op products show up in smaller shops already. Would make sense to put it not in Lerwick but a bit away from the outskirts perhaps north since land could be a bit cheaper and the tourists are not going to be back in full force for some time so business from local residents would be the key to its success or failure. north? coop in brae already they where surely seen on both sites with arch henderson and emn plant last tuesday
  5. Da word on street is coop have bought the park opposite the sandwick bakery and atween frank charlesons and blydoit anybody else heard this?
  6. Now that covid has returned to Shetland it is distressing to see the work men doing the job at the post office refusing to wear masks wondering into local shops and cafes showing no care for the danger they represent and refusing to put on masks or sanitize there hands when asked by staff in the premises. What can be done about this?
  7. does anybody use sub kegs thinking about buying a machine not sure if its worth the money or not
  8. (***admin edit - please only quote the section of text you are responding to rather than the whole discussion ***) guilty by association? he was one of the owners of p&o it was an extension of himself how is that guilty by association p&o where involved in the slave and herion trade ergo he was involved in it
  9. So What, he is remembered for his transport company and boats were likely crewed by slaves, White people were forced to join the navy at that time regardless of weather they wanted to or not. The slaves Black or otherwise were enslaved by other Africans who are responsible for their enslavement. on the Caribbean plantations countless Irish indentured servants died whist working and were treated more harshly. In fact indentured servants were often just abductees who pirates sold into indenture under false pretenses and indentured servants who finished the time limit sometimes got re-abducted several time over and were never freed. most people cant name their parents ancestry 5 generations back. Some did bad things but many are remembered for the other things that weren't bad. Some of my ancestors were killed or striped of property for begin catholic and somewhere Indians mistreated by the British East India company. But to pin down a specific individual who mistreated a person who i descend from would take an enormous amount of research and the people who did that are bloody skeletons at this point. But Maybe that's why BLM is attacking random tombstones as of late, [image removed from quoted response] https://eu.greenvilleonline.com/story/news/2020/06/04/powdersville-cemetery-vandalized-graffitied/3150248001/ [image removed from quoted response] Maybe i don't feel the need to dwell on misfortune of a distant ancestor whose misery has little to no effect on the people alive today and i don't wallow in self pity and beg for reparations because if you have to go back further than your Great grandparents you are scraping the bottom of the barrel. i also see lots of people blaming Slavery for the misdeeds of black protesters, Ok why wasn't this happening in the 1900s or even the 1950s? the rise in crime seems to coincide with the rise of Single mothers, many of the black families were poor and a larger percentage on welfare. Lots of reasons but you get more money as a single person than a couple many households split up, Same thing is happening to poor white families just a larger percentage of Blacks were poor so it was more apparent on them first. Besides this plenty of examples of people from these groups that have made something of themselves and raised a family well. Would it not be more beneficial to encourage them to follow this example. Perhaps the rabid British Nationalist could explain, clearly and concisely, just what Ms. Sturgeon should apologise for? Same thing that happened to Black people [image removed from quoted response] other bad things do not make honouring somebody involved in the slave trade ok.
  10. Are you positive that The Guardian works on a non-profit basis? Available for everyone, funded by readers The Guardian Proves That Free Has Failed this says that they are trying to take in enough to keep the newspaper going not to make a profit
  11. (***admin edit - please only quote the section of text you are responding to rather than the whole discussion ***) https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/aug/27/britain-slave-trade no just didn't think it was a hard to find information I don't read The Guardian.. Anyway, before it limited my "experience", I only saw one reference to P&O with no additional information. Did I miss something ? sorry you don't read the guardian probably the best newspaper on the shelf non profit no Rupert murdocks to dictate its direction. Also it must be forgotten the massive part p&o played in the heroin trade which caused untold misery in the east and enslaved the population into addiction and misery. https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=ZyikV4Kspy8C&pg=PA123&lpg=PA123&dq=p%26o+plantation+owners&source=bl&ots=9Unf_ZADNw&sig=ACfU3U3uXmilMr0bjDUT3TAKDBU6-Vj2pQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj1t4mTk_PpAhXKSxUIHZGwBIIQ6AEwC3oECBAQAQ#v=onepage&q=p%26o%20plantation%20owners&f=false https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=47vEDwAAQBAJ&pg=PA102&lpg=PA102&dq=p%26o+plantation+owners&source=bl&ots=xO2C5NkWdP&sig=ACfU3U3c-8la-2ZzgA1XHc3v-omQ6w0eZQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj1t4mTk_PpAhXKSxUIHZGwBIIQ6AEwEHoECAkQAQ#v=onepage&q=p%26o%20plantation%20owners&f=false http://www.inmotionaame.org/texts/viewer.cfm;jsessionid=f8302302041591615254079?id=1_035T&bhcp=1 https://www.obv.org.uk/news-blogs/caribbean-nations-demand-slave-reparations
  12. how can you own slaves and not be a slave trader how did you come to have them if not from trade plenty of references on the internet to which companies received payments to free there slaves So, you can't back up your claim then ? https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/aug/27/britain-slave-trade no just didn't think it was a hard to find information
  13. surely amazing grace a song written by a former slave trader as an apology is not to be banned nobody is suggesting knock down buildings but making people walk under Arthur andersons name everyday when some of them may have ancestors that suffered or died because of the slave trade seems unjust.
  14. how can you own slaves and not be a slave trader how did you come to have them if not from trade plenty of references on the internet to which companies received payments to free there slaves
  15. surely not hard to see just check the compensation he was paid from the government when slavery was abolished Scotland may not have to follow suite for the second lockdown since the reaction in Scotland has been negligible compared with that of English cities and Cardiff. yes but where are the building and street names in lerwick celebrating the barbery slave traders
  16. lots of activity and quite rightly around the country removing slave traders names from streets and statues being pulled down etc. But what about closer to home with the prominence of the anderson high and other shrines to slave trading in shetland p&o having received compensation from the goverment to buy there slaves freedom it seems strange to have named a new school after arthur anderson.
