  1. Pretty sure it won't affect the blind too much. Apart from the fact that the cost has now come to light (ahem), they have probably realised that they have been paying far too much on their rates bill.

I have never been a big fan of street lights. The cost of supply, maintenance and upkeep is one thing but when the street lights are spaced so close together that they give you more light than a normal Shetland day then things are wrong. I commented years ago that a simple cure to solve a lot of the issues would be to replace dead bulbs with energy efficient down lit LED's.

By having them only spread the light downwards it would appease the dark skies bunch and by replacing them periodically it would have cost virtually nothing compared to the problems that are being exercised now.

I feel a Hollywood poster coming up...

  2. :) - I hiv been cross-referencin' da spellin' wie J J Grahams interpretation in da auld Shetland Dictionary.  Dinna blame me!  Fur instance I wid use "Platch" instead o' "Platsh" but stuck wie da dictionary tae keep things simple.  Mony a wird will differ dependin' on whit pairt o turdlin' you hail fae. :thmbsup

  3. it was only on the screen for 30 mins according to the poster, id hardly call that a hang, in relation to windows update times.

also as the hdd light was flashing then it hasnt hung, it was processing - thats why i said it was dangerous to switch it off at that point

I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one :)

  4. Not surprised anybody is confused about computer specs to be honest. The IT market goes to great lengths to keep the general public confused. That way they will keep on spending money on machines with power that they will never actually use.

Intel decided to 'streamline' their processor range by bringing out the i3, i5 and i7 processors. Simple really....

    i3 is Entry Level

    i5 is Mid Range

    i7 is Pro

Except it isn't. Each processor has a range within it. Some of the i5 processors are faster than the i7's. The end consumer doesn't realise this, and they have no need to.

I do take exception to tha fact that Intel processors are miles better than AMD's without any explanation. As the two main CPU manufacturers out there, they both tend to take turns as to who has the fastest/bestest chips around. Sometimes Intel has the stronghold, sometimes AMD does. Neither are worse in that respect, it just depends what is available on the market at the time.

  5. Correct. However, if the machine has actually hung on updates then nothing but rebooting it will stop that. To say that it has probably caused another problem is unlikely. If that was the case then you would more than likely see symptoms at boot.

Chances are you will get windows moaning at you the next time you go to shutdown to tell you that there are updates to be installed. If that continues then, yes you have a problem. One or more of the updates are failing to install for some reason. Could be sausage all but it could be something more serious.

Guessing that by now you would have found out whether it was or not. :)

  6. Ahem, sports forum perchance?
