Yep, best of luck with... something different! Love the web site too. One thing I'd say is the book appointment button isn't immediately obvious when viewed on a high res browser when it gets anchored down the right hand side on the screen. Other than that, it looks great!

^It does involve wearing a special shirt! A red and black checked shirt to be truly authentic. One also sports an axe (the bigger the chopper the better) and the all important woodsman beard. Knowing how to do anything with wood (other than perhaps lighting a match) is optional.

Is it SIC policy that staff do no it work from home? I can think of at least one management level SIC "worker" that "works" from "home" more often than their office. Can you feel the love?

Governments of all persuasions at both Westminister and Holyrood are probably guilty of not considering any of the Isles at the formation of their core policies.

For example when the police service call centres were originally moved to Inverness was when they potentially lost the local knowledge. The same training those in Inverness were given are transferreble to elsewhere on the mainland.

All Governments are guilty to varying degrees of the accusation that they centralise too much. Locally SIC are often receive criticism for being too Lerwick centric.

WS if they want to win the debate need to concentrate on a positive campaign about the benefits and steer clear of political mud slinging in their message of another way is possible for Shetland.

I don't think anyone is against improving the quality of life in and for Shetland. The polarising issue that comes up time and time again is the incessant SNP bashing. Whether said bashing is founded or not, it is the constant negativity that appears to stir folk up (myself included) and gets nowhere.

I do not believe the SNP and SG to be all bad. Neither do I believe them to be all good. However, when all you see from the same ardent WS supporters (Tinkler, Inkster etc.) is a constant stream of SNP bashing, (again, whether founded or not) it leads to conflict. Needless and pointless conflict.

About the only thing that has kept me from completely discounting WS is a small glimmer of sense emanating from Whalsa's keyboard. A clear belief in the core principles of WS, along with an acceptance that everything *on any side* *isn't always perfect* makes for a basis for actual debate and subsequently the option of progress. And there is so much progress to be made that the never ending stream of "SNP BAAAD" daily diatribes pretty much kill most folks belief that any progress is indeed possible.

Personally, I'm fed up with it. When it comes to talk of improving Shetland, I don't care if the SNP were spawned from the depths of Hell (or not). I want to see those at the helm being capable of looking forward and acknowledging that nobody is indeed perfect.

Right everyone I think we have gotten way off topic here.

Amanda and John had a falling out, in my humble opinion there was fault on both sides (and significant back story) but what is done is done and arguing about it is detracting from the real issues - something which I am sure many of our opponents are delighted about.

There are bigger issues at stake here than a few bruised egos or heated words.

I would be happy if discussion would revert back to the purpose this thread was set up for.

Wir Shetland is holding public roadshows in both Brae and Hillswick on the 16th and 17th of this month. Will any of you be attending?

Not been on here for a few days but I see the decision not to send an official presence to Sturgeons gathering has been fairly well covered. There was a discussion held and that was the decision, right or wrong, but as has been stated all members were free to go along and ask whatever they wished. I believe one of our members attended and asked about ferry subsidies in Shetland compared to other Scottish Islands. The answer provided was that the Scottish Government spent over £200 million on subsidising ferry routes - she did not mention that a declining £32 million of this is for Orkney and Shetland (down from £37 million 3 years ago) while over the same period the overall budget has risen from £144 million to £207 million.

If this is the type of evasive answers our questions would have received then perhaps it is just as well we didn't attend, as has been said already it is not as if we would have gotten to have an open debate with her.

As for Nicola being a nice woman and visiting someone and never mentioning politics, that is all well and good but ultimately being nice and convivial to the public is not the main traits I am looking for in the leader of a nation - it is her job to talk about politics and the running of the country and to make fair and just decisions, not to be be fine person to visit for a cup o tae!

Nothing directed at you Whalsa. Other than perhaps letting "new blood take the helm". By "younger" I mean of lesser age than the terrible trio which grants a wide scope AFAIK you're way younger than them and don't take narrow minded cheap shots.

I have absolutely no idea who should, could or would lead the way. I'm sure John is a fine fellow but you can't lead a charge if you're not on the battlefield if you'll pardon the terrible analogy. A leader's time is surely better spent doing rather than writing endless letters to the ST. They'll gladly publish them as they know the traffic it will bring to their site for the guaranteed flame war that will ensue between the SNP BAAAAD and SNP GOOOOOD folks. For folk to believe that some form of self governance is a real possibility, it does nothing more than instill fear of who would be doing the governing were it to happen.

^Not every job or business that relies on the internet is a web site and, even those that are, still require a good amount of bandwidth to maintain and update in this day and age. Besides, a relatively high speed connection will have other uses than purely business (and YouTube  ) that simply haven't been possible over the current connections.

Or perhaps everyone on Fair Isle should just carry on knitting sat by the fire like the good old days... and they could use their dial-up modems for goalposts when the weather comes fine   Plus, the money is coming from an allotted grant scheme specifically for just this kind of thing isn't it? From the sounds of things, Brian and the rest involved have gotten of their arses and gone out and secured all this which should be applauded. I can all too easily imagine the grumbling were the money to go somewhere further south!

Yep, two sides to this coin. It certainly doesn't help when employers throw their toys out the pram and pressure employees to make dangerous journeys. My work are more than accommodating I may add... but others certainly aren't. Lady Roachmill was told to walk over a mile to "get the bus" after several attempts to get her car up an untreated icy hill at the crack of dawn. All this in 0 degree head-on snow.

I will leave the Red top and mistruths to yourself, As I prefer to get my information straight from the horses mouth.

Folk looking to flog their stuff in the classifieds (Facebook too) who stick the price as "offers". Put a price! You obviously have some figure in mind that is acceptable to you, so put that (or even a slightly higher amount to allow for some wiggle room) in. Just sticking in "offers" looks decidedly shady IMHO.
