Sorry for butting in but, does anyone else think that current housing policies are pandering to a system that has become "soft" on societies "failures".?

Radical, I know but, imho, working people should ALWAYS get 1st choice on council/social(?) housing.  After all, they are paying the taxes that support the chemically/alcohol dependent who, imho, should be housed in supervised "barracks style" accommodation until they are deemed dry/clean enough to rejoin the mainstream.
If they are claiming their affliction is an "illness" then, they should be obliged to recieve "treatment" if they want "help".

Should private rents be capped?  Yes they should as it would prevent the kind of "racketeering" we see on Shetland (and elsewhere) at the moment.  Blihely stating that "if you are earning £xx,xxx pa then you can either share or, easily afford private rent is stupid...  Why should anyone work and stay in relative poverty(?) in order to be "milked" for over priced rental in order to pay someone else's mortgage?

I also believe that private tenancies should be "protected" in the same way that council tenancies are and, that any increases in rent should be controlled/limited.

The whole purpose of working is to acumulate enough cash to cater for your own needs and, if you wish, buy your own place not to "feather someone else's nest".

Paul the government can do anything they want im not saying cap it a stupid low amount but at least make it affordable we hear constantly about building affordable housing it can pretty much be done through planning law changes

I don't like the part instantly but I think affordable housing should be available to all. I don't agree with the sharing aspect. Why are they broke? Tax revenues are at an all time high but they wont tell you that. Is it not the fact they constantly mismanage revenue and as others have said on Shetlink the money administrations spend on administering themselves often far outstrips what they spend on the services they should be providing. Back in the seveties councils went through huge regenaration plans renovating what were described as less desirable housing estates Labour government I think in the eighties they sold all the houses off at huge discounts wait a minute was that a shrewd move. Then they sold on mass whole tenament blocks to private land lords did they do them up no they simply rented the sub standard accommodation out. Torries i think so really the government failed in the provision of social housing but hey when all the folks were buying there council houses for next to nothing there was no opposition. Where did the money go?? As an aside the Torries are at it again letting tennants now buy their housing association housing further adding to the problem. It really is a joke people on here spout share a house buy a house move to a remote area far from you circle of friends etc etc Think about it folks this is the 21st century things are meant to be getting better

History of council housing - http://fet.uwe.ac.uk/conweb/house_ages/council_housing/print.htm

    "1 Introduction
Historically council housing is public housing that is rented to households who are unable to afford to rent from the private sector or buy their own home. It has been called council housing due to the role of district and borough councils managing the housing. More recently Registered Social Landlords (RSLs), including semi-independent and not-for-profit housing associations, have played a larger role in providing and managing housing, consequently council and RSL housing is collectively known as ‘social housing’.
The underlying principle of council house provision is that historically the private sector was deemed unable to provide adequate housing for all and state intervention was required to ensure there was good quality affordable housing for low income households. ..."

Paulb - read what Neepjelly wrote. She has said that there's no job security, that's why they're paying better than average wages. It's because if they didn't ,nobody would touch them with a bargepole as they'd be going down an employment dead-end in Shetland. Nobody on the SGP contract would come all the way up here from the UK for, say, £9.00 an hour.

Shorter term jobs always pay higher, the same as at SV, all those guys from Wood Group, OC, Cape etc are on decent money because their manning levels rise and fall with demand. Plus there's no way that Shetland has enough people with the right skills to fill all the positions - so the only answer is to pay well and spread the net further.

As for £18k for an admin job, I could argue that you'd be better off not wasting  8 years studying and going and banging out some salmon or crab in the local factories for £8.50 p/h. You'd have been miles in front financially by now

TBH, some of the comments in this thread are now going beyond making helpful suggestions and drifting into righteous indignation and demands for explanations regarding her personal life. I'm sure that's not what Neepjelly was asking for......

Where does that statement come from. I grew up in a council house which housed everything from local councillors, Tradesmen to the unemployed

I to left home when I was 16 and joined the forces. I was tought discipline and how to manage money when my time was served part of my resettement was a council house I was allowed to join the waiting list 18 months before I left. I came out to a job and have worked all my life I bought my first house 10 years after leaving no not the council house but only when I felt that I could afford it. neepjelly is no different she works she is being prudent and sensible debt can cripple people read the news its one of the biggest causes of suicide. If the state cannot provide housing then at least cap private rents. Bring back the old rent officer and enforce the rent cap people forget while all these lanlords make huge profits the house prices go up but the ass will fall out of it one day and then we will hear them

Because I don't want to house share.

I want my own space. I've been in halls, lived with a partner, but now I need my own space. I've lived away from my parents since I was 16 years old (i'm 22), and this is the first time I've approached the council for help.

Paul the state still has an obligation to house its people when did we get to the stage where we encouraged young people to borrow 100K just to have a roof over their head for gods sake. I was tought to live within my means save for the future is that not what those who are in power now are saying yet there is no affordable housing to enable them to do exactly that.

I received 2 months notice and immediately got myself on the council list and began searching for private rental, however.. as stated all over this website, it's far to expensive to consider. I'm going to hazard a guess and say you're not willing to pay £1000 + a month for rent? Well, neither am I... it's completely unrealistic.
I'm not refusing to compromise. I don't drive, and can't rely on someone to get me to work as everyone works different rotations. On my housing form I'm willing to accept any size of property at present, because at the moment I'm in a b&b and my belongings are spread far and wide across Shetland. It's easy to make assumptions when you're not in the position of someone else, and people should maybe take that into consideration when writing their comments. I have all number of reasons for staying in Lerwick and don't owe anyone a justification for that.
The council look into your case to make sure you are not "making yourself homeless" and they did not feel this was the case. My case is a particularly popular one at the moment as rent prices are soaring and landlords see this as a business opportunity, tenants are getting their notice to quit, and have no other option but to approach the council.

With so many people calling the workers "travellers" it's hard to keep tabs of what people mean.

To be honest I'm disgusted at everybodys attitude towards the work men. We're supposed to be a lovely and welcoming isle yet all that has happened since day one is moaning about them. They are here trying to provide for their families and earn a good wage. They need a bit of down time too. I work at the gas plant and the majority of the workers are the lovliest souls you could hope to meet. They definitely have a better attitude towards us than we do them.

There's nothing that can be done about their being here, so we mights as well embrace it and make some new friends!

I'm 20, and trying to find a house with my boyfriend... this is proving more difficult than expected.
We both have secure jobs and have lived here most of our lives, moving away only to go to college.
If we were applying for housing with Hjatland there's no way we could get anything remotely close to Lerwick, Scalloway or Tingwall (which is where we'd like to move). Even getting houses further away proves difficult.
And looking at private rental is proving just as difficult. For example one bedroom flats going for £1000 a month!
It's no wonder more and more young people are leaving the isle... they can't find anywhere to live up here!
People are getting just a bit to greedy. I can understand why they're charging so much, I probably would myself given the opportunity... but somebody needs to give us young ones a chance.
