We should all muck in to the civil war against the S.I.C. It's the only way we'll get them to replace the skips around the villages again. "They" claim that they're unnecessary but "they" don't live out in the country and if "they" do then "they" chuck it all over the banks like the rest of us who can't afford to have the council come and collect it, although "they" will deny it in court of course.

Then we can sort out Russia, Ukraine and take out ISIS while we're at it, and get home in time for tea

Don't know but, what has being 'sensible' got to do with it?

We are quite an 'atavistic' species (from Gremlins I think) and are always willing to fight anyone and anything.

Problem we have at the moment is that the american military/industrial complex needs a good war to keep it's balance sheets on the 'up'.  Casualties don't seem to matter to much to them as long as they are 'overseas'.

The rest of the world seems to be bothered by islamist extremists who, despite their atrocities, do not seem to be plentiful enough to cut everybodies heads off but, they are spreading.

Maybe a bit late now but, the only way I can think of stopping them would be for the various 'coalitions' that seem to exist amonst 'western' nations to stop bombing the hell out of them and leave them to sort their own problems.

Time, I think, for the government to consider re-arming and training the population. Just in case...

Well, its 10 months since COPE received £112,312.00 to "Provide up to 15 work placements" for people with disabilities and as far as I can ascertain there has not been so much as 1 place provided. I would be delighted if COPE could correct me on that point and tell me that several new placements have been provided. What I do know is that the old Scrapstore has been 're-furbished' and that the 'pet project' soap shop have had huge amounts of money splurged on them, and to what effect? This is Shetland where we are more impressed with what you do, rather than what you have.

I also note that the prices in the Scrapstore have reached 'London' prices!! It would seem to be that it now thinks of its self as a fashionable antique store... Has it lost sight of the fact that most of its content is donated? and that the people that do donate would like their items to help POOR people to replace/ furnish their homes. It seems to me that COPE scrapsore has lost its way, where once it was the place that people in need could turn to for help in furnishing a modest home, it now seems to be trying to be some sort of fashionable home design ...thing.. Which is the only word I could come up with to describe what COPE has turned into, and poor folks can, well, look elsewhere...

ahhw come on, whilst I get pee'd off by lazy shoppers who find it difficult to walk the 10 yards in order to put their trolley away safely, I still feel the coop also has a responsibility to be checking the car park on a regular basis and clear rouge trollies.

With the winds at this time of year they tend to get blown into people's cars causing expensive repairs. If I don't feel it's safe to leave my car in their car park, then I would stop shopping there.

As for the pot holes, they could have done something with them by now, after all it's been in a poor state of repair for a long while.

it may well be private property, but it's hardly enticing customers.

Well that is what happens at Tesco.  People employed to bring trolleys back to the entrance as needed and indeed used to happen at the Co-op but sadly seems to happen no more.

^ In the same vein, I've been trying to figure out how a shop "nobody goes to" comes to have a worn out carpark, and one that's "always busy" has a perfect? one.

Maybe the potholes really were originally Tesco's ones, and they had them shifted in the middle of the night to nobble the competition.

And valet parking with a quick massage at the checkout too perhaps? I'm not quite sure if you're being serious. Hope not!

I can't say I find the COOP car park that bad. White lines (or not) folk park (or not) the same, regardless. If your car is as precious (and you have working legs) there's always the option of parking in the other car park (with lines!) and walking the extra 20 yards.

CrunchieSquirrel, you are right, it's bad. Not that the incident you described has happened to me. Don't we all agree that the car park should be re-surfaced to prevent incidents like this?

Also the white lines to show the parking spaces are nearly all worn off the middle section. It's just a sign on neglect, probably for the co-op to save money. But don't we all agree that if we choose to shop at Co-op that we are all entitled to a nice smooth clearly marked parking area?

True. Nobody ever checks right before heading out of the mid-carpark junction - I'm not sure people even realise it's a junction. And no one seems to be able to turn in without cutting the corner, and then it's your fault for nearly hitting them.

The SIC didn't help the street by putting the bollards at the Clydesdale Bank. The only reason I go the street nowadays is to go the bank, as paying in cash is one of the few activities you still can't do over the internet.

Availability and accessibility - the street has had problems with both for a very long time.

There are two basic kinds of shoppers, the 'get it and GTF outta here' ones, and the 'lets hang out at the mall' ones.

The street serves the latter type (within the constrains of its product range) quite well, but seldom ever sees the former, nor likely ever will.

Unfortunately the former type tend to be the majority, often the very great majority.

Yes, the street is cutsey in an olde worlde kinda way, but as a viable comprehensive shopping throughfare, its days were numbered by 1970 if not before. "Revitalising" it come this time is tantamount to raising the dead, let it become what it will - probably a few cafes, pubs and nick nack shops etc, many only open in summer, and encourage mainstream type retailers to relocate to site(s) where they can operate in the bright, roomy premises with easy pedestrian and vehicle access, and plenty of handy parking, which your average shopper expects as standard in the 21st Century.

I dont know what they do or ard trying to do. Inconsistent information betwern radio and paper, about thr amount of money they are hoping to get. It was never explained why business had to pay?
I believe that wooden flower pot holders were given out. Ok but poor show. They are not even nice. It looks like the wood came off an old pallet. Yes this will really make people want to shop in awer.
I know that people are trying to make it a better shopping experience. Good luck with that.
One real problem is the poor customer service. Why would you want to shop where the staff are unhelpful, rude, cant be bothered or just ignore you? Im not saying all shops or all staff, well not all of the time.
A simple smile when you come in, asking you if you need help. Thats 2 easy things that make shopping a better experience. I was in the craft materials shop in bolts. What a pressure to shop there, they demonstrate good customer service.

So less crap plant boxes we need better customers service.

Good morning to you all and I wouldn't lose any sleep over "Mr sinister's buisness boycott " as for the last 7 months he has been threatening to turn my island in the Hebrides into a toxic waste dump and last time I looked he had failed. I would take his spiteful nationalist persona with a pinch of salt as on one of the blogs I haunt he was going to vote No. He is just a troll with previous for saying anything to get attention and as several other sites have found out best not to feed him or he keeps coming back for more. He has so many disguises it is funny when he forgets who he is supposed to be and answers questions before he has asked them. I was directed to this blog by a friend because he had spotted the old troll and have enjoyed reading it. All the best and DON'T FEED THE TROLL.

"But know this, I and others are serious. We will get you back for is" is a threat no matter what you may say, no matter whether it was posted in jest or with total sincerity

It seems he thinks that by changing to yet another pseudonym that no-one will know who he is. However, as someone who does not normally post on forums such as this, I have been driven to do so.

On any forum, there is always the usual amount of trash by over opinionated people, and Shetlink is no exception. However, I can confidently say without a shadow of a doubt that this is the greatest example of total sprootle I have ever read. The referendum was a result to stay as United Kingdom. If you were as clever as you seem to think you are, you would try working together as a whole, and using the closeness of the vote to ensure that Scotland gets the powers and ability to help shape its future. perhaps though, reading your previous drivel, you should get everyone in Scotland to post on their house windows how they voted. That way you could campaign that fire crews only put out fires of people who voted yes, norses and doctors only treat those who voted yes, and the armed forces from Scotland can ask their enemies in Afghan or wherever they are how they WOULD have voted to decide whether to shoot them or not. Also, if you are so right and so clever, why not post under your real name? Oh, someone who knows you has already posted above to say who you are - they obviously think you talk trash too.

In reality, the REAL bottom line is that millions and millions of pounds were spent on the referendum, on all aspects from planning in government right down to producing little badges and stickers. If that money had instead been used properly, it could have saved rural schools that are due for closure, stopped the constant reduction of our police force and helped towards some of the urban problems we have such as kids sleeping rough in the streets.
Instead, we are now at a situation where the relationship between Scotland and the rest of the UK has been damaged, and the relationship between Scotland and its residents has been damaged and until pathetic fools like you change your childing attitude, those relationships will not be mended and no-one will be able to move on working for the good of the people as a whole.

^ Take it you've not seen the paranoid conspiracy theorists and pipe dreamer's ramblings crawling all over FB these last couple of days. The place isn't fit to go near.

The referendum is old history now, nobody "won", everybody "lost", even the narcissist designer and orchestrator of it all. God knows how much it all cost that could have been much better spent elsewhere, and what old rivalries its re-opened that will fester all over again for who knows how long to come.

Not often I advocate sweeping it all under the rug and try and salvage from the wreckage some kind of future, but this is one time I will, and without the delusions and fairy tales that are springing up everywhere.
