  1. I need to move a lot of stuff up from down south, trying to work out the best box van hire method, hire one locally (Star?) and drive it down and back, or hire a van down south and then off hire in Aberdeen somehow? Just trying to keep the (mostly ferry) cost down so grateful for any advice.
  2. Can someone help? I'm moving up in 3 weeks (possibly 4 weeks). I have a horse that will be moving up with me. I'm using Eric Gillies to get her from Buckinghamshire to Aberdeen. Then she will go on the ferry and be in the care of the ferry all the way to Lerwick. She needs to be collected from the ferry in Lerwick, taken off, and taken to Yell which is where my land is (Sellafirth). At this point, I don't know if I'll be up a day or two before, or a day or two after, her arrival... I'm desperately trying to find someone who can collect her and watch over her (on their land temporarily). If I'm already on my land, I can meet her with the person at Lerwick and take her straight to my home. I don't have the licence or vehicle to take her myself. I've tried contacting Shetland Equestrian Centre three times but have had no replies. I'm so worried that I won't be able to bring her up... Does anyone know anyone who might be able to help?? She is a heavy 16.2hh Percheron mare. Insured under BHS Gold and fully passported. She is being wormed in a week. I would pay for fuel, time, etc etc.
  3. Shetland News has reported that there is to be a consultation on the North boat ferry fares, on October the 3rd, at the Shetland museum and archives. Can I implore every one to have an input into this. We all use the service and know that the cost has spiraled over the last ten years. I find I can only go away once a year now at best, as with grandchildren, the cost is enormous. I'm on boat this Friday (family of 5, with cabin and car) and the ferry has cost more than the self catering accommodation in wales for a (week) 4 nights in hotels and the fuel cost there and back (1000 miles) put together!!! If you want a comparison try this; go to this link for DFDS sailings from Newcastle to the Hook of Holland: http://www.dfdsseaways.co.uk/?gclid=CN2kv4vgs88CFUVmGwod4bgIwg&gclsrc=aw.ds This is about equivalent of our journey to/from Shetland, is un-subsidized and still comes out £260 cheaper than Northlink for same dates we are traveling with simillar cabin and car. Think it says it all- If an un-subsidized operator can do equivalent journey for so much less, and make it profitable, then someone is making a LOT of money out of us!!!
  4. I can find a timetable online but no prices... Does anyone know what the prices are? 3 adults. One way. 1 car less than 2.2 meters high. 1 van 3.35 meters in length. 1 tail-lift van 3.4 meters in length.
  5. Reading the Shetland Times (page 7) one week after the ferry consultation in Bressay I was amazed to see that the SIC are still looking into the possability of building tunnels to Bressay, Whalsay, Unst and Yell at the cost of over £230 million. How can they even contamplate this when they are over £30 million in debt and are looking at cutting the Bressay ferry down from a five man crew to a four man crew? Or the possability of reducing the amount of Ferry runs not only cutbacks to Bressay but cutbacks to other islands Ferrys aswell Am I missing something here or does this sound to you as it sounds to me - totally insane
