  1. Does anyone know anything about fiddles made by Alec Leask? I heard one being played and I love the sound, I’d really like to buy one. I read that he owned a fiddle shop in Lerwick in the 60s and made them also. There’s very little information about him online. Online he is called by Aly, Alec and Alex. Full name is Alexander William Leask. Even though I’d like to buy one, I’d be interested just to talk to anyone who knows of any of his. Hopefully hear something back Cheers
  2. So, not sure if this is the right place to post this (maybe should be in the classifieds *shrugs*) but what the hey... I'm a singer (and, i'm ashamed to say, Only a Singer, can't play instruments) my name is Ian, I'm 23 and I'm looking for a band to jam with and/or perform with. My vocal range sits at about Tenor-Alto (So solid middle to shallow high). I've got a great ear and can sing smoothly or roughly with solid projection (and, crucially, In key). . In terms of what i'm interested in playing: I'm easy really. I'd be quite happy just covering existing popular songs or tackling original compositions, i don't mind (with one exception, i will not under any circumstances be singing "Wagon Wheel" by Darius Rucker ). I can give you a good idea of what i'm taking about, what kinda music I'd wanna play by just listing off a few bands, i guess (that i like and can sing comfortably): R.E.M Alice in Chains The Black Angels Clutch David Bowie The Doors Pixies Lou Reed My Morning Jacket (wishful thinking with this one, really) Mastodon (with difficulty, but i assure you) Pearl Jam Radiohead Paul Simon Bob Dylan That kinda thing, but again, i'm easy and open to suggestions (as long as it's interesting/has some edge to it - can't be arsed with Top 40 stuff) Oh and i have a dad who'll lend me his P.A. system If anyone's interested don't hesitate to send me a message or email me at: Ipriest54753@Gmail.com, Much love .
  3. Hi Folks Just wanted to promote my latest publication: Kids Can Learn Guitar (The Eight Note Method) Book One (and Book 2 - no bugs allowed) Before I moved to Shetland, I was a peripatetic music teacher in schools and in private homes. Frustrated with the lack of logical guitar teaching books I wrote my own - it was huge success across the county. I have now published two paperback A4 books on Amazon. The practice pieces are also available for download or play on my website. I'm also unique in that I offer online guitar/teaching advice to people who buy my guitar teaching book. The books include humorous cartoon characters that give tips, and get up to mischief to make learning fun. Contact me via DM or on my website for further information or for online guitar lessons via webcam. Avalina Kreska

  5. Oxjam Shetland’s Buskathon is back for another year! The third annual Buskathon will take place on Saturday 30th August, at various points along ‘Da Street’. For one day only, the team have recruited some buskers to brighten up the street with live music. We have both well-known musicians who fill up venues every weekend, to those who usually only perform in the comfort of their own home, occupying several 'busking stations', taking it in turns to show off Shetland's musical talent, and raising money for Oxfam while doing so. So take a wander along the street on Sat 30th, and show these amazing people some support! It’s all about raising money for a great cause, while promoting our local music scene and all it has to offer. If you fancy being more than just a passing spectator, there’s still plenty of time to volunteer for a little bit of busking yourself. Get in touch! Email oxjamshetland2014@gmail.com, or phone Ashlea Tulloch, Takeover Manager, on 07799281996. We’ve had everything from bagpipes to harps in the past – there’s a spot for everyone! If you’d like to find out more about Oxjam Shetland and our big annual Takeover on Sat 25th Oct, please search for us on facebook and check out our page. To find out more about volunteering opportunities with us, please get in touch via the contact information above. We’d love to hear from you. Local music, global impact.

    SHETFEST 2014

Shetfest is a one day, not-for-profit all-ages music festival held in Lerwick, Shetland. This years lineup includes visiting acts Pinact, Chris Devotion & The Expectations, Deathcats, Billy Liar, Algernon Doll, Poor Things, Black International, Kill Surrrf, The Walking Targets, Maxwells Dead and Black Cop, aswell as local favourites Frankeneinstein and Brundlehorse. Shetfest 2014 will also play host to the debut live set of local hip-hop artist Audiopium. This year Shetfest will be held on Saturday the 5th of July, at the The Lerwick Legion.
