Claudias
My car insurance was due for renewal in early February. I have been with Norwich Union Direct for about 15 years so was horrified to find that their premium demand had jumped to a massive 420 pounds. The day after I received the notice I received a phone call from NUD asking me if I was about to renew my policy. I complained that the premium was far too high and that I was searching on the internet for lower quotes. The salesman told me that he would ring back the following day.One of the first companies which I contacted,Privilege, offered me fully comp with 250pounds excess for 298.20pounds. I told the NUD salesman of this offer when he rang back. A moment later he redeuced my premium to 307 pounds. When I asked him why they had not quoted this rate in the first instance he told me that the company had a policy of of charging what they think the market can bear. People with expensive cars don't normally dispute the quote but pay up immediately, only awkward sods like myself cause them to lower the quote towards the standard rate.So. Always shop around for the best quote,no matter how long you have been with a good company,
BigMouth
Well done Claudias. My son was quoted either £1,400 or £1,600 to insure his car. He was really peeved because had he have had a sex change it would heve been less. He found an offer with a company that if he insured his (mum's) house he would get his car insurance for half price. So he did and they accepted it. Cool
Njugle
In terms of car insurance my experience has been that familiarity breeds contempt. Longevity counts for little. No surprise really. What i can recommend as a broker is the Post Office. Mine was cheaper and had a better policy than my long term broker. Can't say fairer than that. The exception to the above is my motorbike insurance, for which my long term broker has been exemplary, is not a specialist broker and i am very happy with. The policy is with NU. BigMouth
I had the Pan Euro, Goldwing, Africa Twin and my scooter insured through Carole Nash. Most expensive was the Wing - fully comp brand new £365 a year - ah the benefits of being an old fart
Ross
^^^^^^ I wish I was old... 125 Honda CBR: £900 with ebike. That was third party only, then it got nicked.
BigMouth
^^^ My son has just had his car smashed into outside his house. From what he said it sounded like a car had been nicked. The lead car lost it on a corner and smashed into my son's. The thieves then made off in the new one. He only hard 3rd party as well. My bike is about ten times that in cc and insures for a quarter of the price. Out of interest, ahem, not to put salt in the wound, but from my experience the offer of increased voluntary excess has brung my fully comp to within a few quid of 'Third party only'. Ross
I tried out a few different combinations with the excess. But the whole postcode and age thing/no "no claims" were against me. I loved that bike. I rode all the way from edinburgh to burra, and back again, on that bike with a huge heavy rucksack. God some of the uphill stretches were a push for the tiny fourstroke! Grannys going past flicking the v's , was quite demoralising... still I was a Biker, that made up for it Sniffle, I really did love that bike. BigMouth
^^^ I had the same sort of love affair with a Suzuki GP125 many years ago so I know how it feels when it's gone I had a Suzuki TS250ER stolen when it was only 2 months old from a line of about 300 bikes in Newcastle upon Tyne. In 75 miles they caused £440 damage to an £818 bike. The insurance company wouldn't write it off so it was fixed but never felt the same. It was not a lucky bike. I rode 325 miles through a severe weather warning wearing a cheap plastic kagoul including the M1 from London to Leeds with the L-plates taken off and put under the seat. It had a peanut tank and I had to stop every other service station. I was wearing a huge L-frame rucksack that the wind was catching all the way up. What a miserabe bloody journey that was. I got stopped by the Police, but managed to waffle my way out of being unable to produce my licence on the motorway. I didn't even get asked to produce my documents. Another time I went awkwardly around a corner and got stopped by plod who couldn't understand why my licence said full, yet I had an L-plate on the front but none on the back. I had to explain that it was full for a car, so he asked me to produce my documents. I chose a police station 100 miles away as I was on my way there, but he thought that I was trying to be funny. I sold it cheap and was glad to see the back of it.
hellsbells
I had the same problem of being with a broker for 17+ years only to have the quote in December of £650 I nearly fainted and when I'd recovered I phoned the NFU in Lerwick and was quoted less than £200 so if you are thinking of changing go along to the NFU and you will be surprised. My son (19) is even insured with them for about £300+ fully comp and got a discount the second year.

Or buy yerself a great big chain. You could spend £100 but it'll last for years and be virtually unbreakable to anyone but the most professional of thieves. Ross
^^^^^^I had a huge mofo of a chain. "thatcham" approved and all that. But they used an angle grinder. It was in a nice area of edinburgh and fully lit but they still got it.
PeterJ
As we all know, car insurance (and any type of insurance policy) is generally a rip off !! Being a young driver i used to find it hard to get my own policy (unless you wanted to pay £1500 + third party on a crap car). However, after spending many days on the internet, and hundreds of quotes later, i came accross Ecarinsurance --> http://www.ecarinsurance.co.uk I managed to insure a group 16 car (Toyota Celica GT) in my name (20 year old) with 2 years no claims for under £300 (TPFT) - with fully comp in at £468. They seem to be a growing company, and i have noticed they cover all types of policies - Home, Bike, Contents Etc !! Well worth a look if anyone is renewing their policies i think !!
