Thanks for the responses.

I'm getting anything between 4.1Mb and 5.4Mb, and afaik I'm a further 100 - 200 meters from the your same exchange Marvin.

mmh.....not happy....

How are you checking that?...I am reliably informed that the best way of checking is using BT's own speed checker. I used one of the other speed checkers and it showed 2Mb.

I think there is a fault on my line. Last night I had to resort to my mobile because my landline cut out and gave me engaged tones every couple of minutes.

I am just using the software that came with my provider ( pipex ) speed touch connection I think it is called. ( dodgy I know)

Never used an online thing since I used one that said I was downloading at 100Mb

using the BT line checker it says "Your line should be capable of supporting download speeds of 5.5Mb up to 8Mb" that is a bit optimistic.. I would say my average is 5.0Mb

I was online most of last night apart for 30 minutes or so while I tried to set up my wireless and failed miserably and then Dragons den came on and I gave up. I have been noticing recently though that it usually takes 2 or 3 attempts to dial up. : shakes fist :

Just tried using the bt speed checker.. but it tested my patience more.. will try again when it isn't peak hours.

Guest posiedon

I said the other day, in another thread, that I was having trouble playing videos, I just checked my connection speed here, (it's easy and free)

when we first got wireless broadband, we were getting 8 mb, it's now down to anywhere between 850 kb to 1.6 mb, I don't know what the hell's going on but I will be on the phone to Orange in the morning (it's always too busy at night) No wonder videos wont play

I don't trust speedtest.net

http://www.speedtest.net/result/206534765.png

Tonight the bt speed test is saying that I'm getting 0.6Mb which seems a lot closer to the truth than speedtest.

It was the same last night. Bt said I was getting 0.2Mb and speedtest was saying i was getting about 2Mb.

The cnet speed test that posiedon suggested says I'm getting 1.8Mb

Speed tests here (Scalloway) seem to suggest that I connect at a very healthy 1.9 - 2.4Mb on my 2Mb connection.

As a 'heads up', I read somewhere that most ISP's will 'throttle back' heavy users under their Fair Usage Policies.

If this is true then subscribers who continually download music and videos are likely to run foul of them.

I'm with Tiscali and my monthly 'allowance' is 30Gb (although I don't get anywhere close to this). Other ISP's offer as little as 3Gb. Worth checking to see what you signed for.
