trout Posted March 26, 2006 Report Share Posted March 26, 2006 As recent postings containing derogatory elements slanted towards an individual posting within particular forum - "Shetland News" - , it has been decided to restrict this forum to only those users who have registered with Shetlink. This particular action has been taken, as the mission of Shetlink: to be an easily accessible tool to connect people and garner open debate on issues concerning Shetland, can be attained to a higher level if the issue with "Guests" postings with absolute anonimity is removed. This decision is based on the postings within particular threads in this forum. It is a good sign because it proves that Shetlink has got to the stage that there is enoough interest to justify registration. I can understand that there are many people out there in positions of 'trust' that cannot give their identity but there are far too many that would rather abuse the anonymous status than make use of it. I sincerely hope that those that would have otherwise used an anonymous guest posting, register under a anonymous name and continue useful debates to the Shetlink community. As with most things in life it is easier to find problems than to find solutions, and easier still to find fault with those who try.Easiest done, least rewarding. To be honest Wheesht, I think the thing that does most to hinder debate is anonymous posting. It's already been said elsewhere, but all you end up with is a messy, hard to follow list of one liners and occasional insults which puts everybody else off properly reading the thread. If you are really concerned about your secret identity being revealed you could even set up a false email address for the purpose of registration . Then all you will leave behind is your IP address. Yes, if the police/courts require a servers logs - they can order the server owner / site owner to provide them the relevant information. Don't forget that EVERY single site you ever visit on the Internet leaves your footprint behind. Just by visiting a site you are giving them your IP information and any other information that they may chose to pull from you - screen size, screen depth, operating system, browser, etc etc ... the list is quite massive! They are perfectly within their rights to do this - as well as drop cookies on your PC without your knowledge and garner further info by doing this too ... thats "the way of the web". It is for this reason that people should get as great an understanding as possible of aspects of Internet security so as to keep themselves "safe" - as there are more than a few rougue website owners! Even sites you may consider "safe" - pull info about you and serve you advertising based on cookies with your browsing "preferences" (i.e. which sites you visit) - all of this happening without you realising!
