Okay guys and galls, let's have it...

What's hot and what's not in the realm of Shetland fast food and eateries.

Put your opinions down and who knows, could be the local 'Michelin' guide. :D

Then again it could just let me know where to go on Saturday night to save the effort of cooking. :idea:

PS Use nicknames or hints if you want to avoid shameless promotion/legal action :wink: But i don't think any of you are that 'blett'

Best Fry up = Co-op (5 or 8 items. The choice is yours)

Best Saucermaet roll = Weighbridge takeaway (I recommend cheese and onions on it, with a bottle of Lucozade. DO NOT BUY THE COFFE)

Best BLT = Slotties (nice hats)

Best 'proper grub' = Maryfield or Mid Brae Inn (they don't skimp on the tatties. Monty's, take note)

Best steak = Baroc (make sure someone else is paying)

Worst bacon roll = Winddog Cafe (Microwaved. How dare they! I recommend firing it out of the van window)

Worst service = Monty's (waited 1/2 hr before we were offered a drink)

But what's the best Indian take away/restaurant in Zetland? Raba / Sarmile / Spice of India / The Brae one? Peter Gear, you are the accepted authority on such matters. Please enlighten us

Mmm, showing my age here! Was where Last Ditchology used to be, the original harbour cafe.

But what's the best Indian take away/restaurant in Zetland? Raba / Sarmile / Spice of India / The Brae one? Peter Gear, you are the accepted authority on such matters. Please enlighten us


Sarmile does it for me! Some of their Nepalese dishes are wonderful, pity it's only a takeaway.

Bets bacon roll was DEFINITELY Lizzies! And see that grill thing they used, you just wanted to grab it and snog all that dripping bacon fat out of it mmmm...

Ahem! Enough of my fantasies.

Sarmile does it for me. I think they've slipped a little since they first opened but they still rock. Best value snack in town; Chicken tikka roll from there.

Maryfield is great but can anyone manage three courses? I did it once, but had to leave one of the side dishes that comes with the main.

Best steak- I would have to say the shetland hotel, as a one off.

Baroc seem to do good food, decent portions but the presentation reminds me of school canteen, ie dumped on the plate. (snobby, eh?)

Questions:

what's this new lerwick hotel gaff all about, haven't been.

Is the NAFC good? Personally i don't rate it that highly, it's a canteen serving fish 5 days a week, and...

Where oh where oh where is our decent seafood restaurant? We live in the middle of the sea for flukes sakes. Anywhere else in the world...etc

Chinese? Muckle dyke for takeaway, silver bus for eating in.

oh yeah, rumour has it that the sarmile guys want to find a restaurant venue and if they can't will move away :(

And peeriebryan; co-op wins on price for fry-up but have you seen what they do to black pudding? it's a crime against offal! dried up cheap plastic yuk! And the fat soaked tattie scone, and those awful hash browns

The Queen's Hotel is THE BESTEST if Fat-Man is cheffing. Otherwise don't bother. Expensive but worth it if you're 'celebrating'. He's creative, exceptionally good at his job... superb seafood, incredible menus, fantastic selection. Best chef in Shetland? Can anyone out there nominate another?

Sunday dinner (if you want to treat your good lady but you don't have time to put a roast on yourself), has to be the Carvery at the LK Hotel.

Or if you're with the lads, it'll be curry. Spice are good at mains, Raba good at starters. Sarmile excellent allround.

Wind Dog; well, I await this summer's takeaway fare now that they've gone into partnership with Margaret. You never know, we can but live in hope. Andy's an excellent chef, but I agree that in the past his takeaway buns were somehow less edible than petrified poo and deserved to be thrown over the side of the ferry - thank goodness for the Skibhoul shop's bakery. Shame the management didn't perpetuate the "local history" table-spreads of the Haroldswick shop when they moved the facility to Baltasound. Anyone ever experienced the eat-in facility in Fetlar's shop? Then of course there's always the Hilltop

Just to drag this topic back to the top of the pile as a lot of new opinions have come along since it was last discussed.

Any further food wisdom knocking around.

I am now led to believe that the best chinese takeaway is the silver bus. Only tried the new dragon place once and it seemed alright, any experts?

Anybody had any grub at the place in Hillswick yet?

I had something to eat in Hillswick last year when my son came up. I have to admit to being really impressed. First place that I have eaten where they ask you to pay what you think!

Four major exceptions to the rule that visitors have that the only dish eaten here is mince and tatties, Montys (only had lunch there), Baroc (for their steaks), the new Deli/cafe in the Toll Clock whose name escapes me, and lastly the Spiggie Hotel. Oh, there was the Bigton Cafe for lunch on the only day that it was ever open when I passed for their brie and advocado sandwiches. Cool, I didn't know you could get advocados here.

Brae Inn was memorable for the fact that they should equip you with mountaineering gear as the portions are so big.

I haven't been to any of the fast food places. Once went into Burger King and had something that tasted like tepid dog. Never again

That's the Booth, I take it.

Excellent food, Pay by donation? I think I've paid more for food there than i would have been charged 'cos it's such a nice idea!


There is a new place en-route to hillswick, opened last year. Anybody been there? Or maybe it's pay by donation too and i'm out of touch :oops:

so one day I sent my son off to the shops for a couple of foccacia rolls and a jar of lemon mayonaisse, packed my suitcase and buggered off before he got back.

Is it at Breiwick or somewhere? It was in the paper last year. The chef is reputed to be really good, the view is said to be really good and it's big enough to hold a coach party and open all day!

Sounds too good to be true eh?

That's why i wondered about it. :wink:

The seafood restaurant at the Lerwick Hotel is quite good we were there about 3 weeks ago.

Good selection of seafood and a lot of local ingredients used as well.

Definitley would go back there.

Service was good as well - mind it was pretty empty due to the snow. The paella was cooked from scratch if I remember rightly.

Nobody has yet mentioned the sit in bit of the Fort Chippy. A bit cramped and a bit of a goldfish bowl I admit but surely the best place in Shetland for the freshest cooked Fish and Chips and at a very reasonable price too.
