peeriebryan
What the hells this thread all about anyway??lI think its something to do with an article a man wrote in a Birmingham newspaper. Anyone care to elaborate?
Muppet
It was an article in the Birmingham Post brandishing Shetland as the most depressing place in the British Isles. Cant find it online, but the Shetland Times editorial refers to it. http://www.shetlandtoday.co.uk/Shetlandtimes/content_details.asp?ContentID=19041 Apparently a quarter of us exibit symptoms associated with mental illness, we suffer emotional poverty, parts of the island are locked in a time warp of 50 or 60 years ago, we live in the Arctic Circle and we celebrate the Uphellgyja festival! Ah! Just found it! http://icbirmingham.icnetwork.co.uk/birminghampost/news/tm_objectid=16943968%26method=full%26siteid=50002-name_page.html I've not read it all but you can make of it what you will! JAStewart
we celebrate the Uphellgyja festival! I don't get why this is a bad thing?
Tom
"The community was lifted by the oil industry moving there in the 70s with the Sullom Voe terminal which was the biggest in Europe, but in recent years, along with the white fishing industry, it has collapsed," Last I checked Sullom Voe hadn't collapsed... And the fishing is certainly still present. It is in the arctic circle. Um, no it isn't. And where did they pull that spelling up Up-Helly-Aa from? david
Yeah the dull grey windy days are depressing. But then you get a day like today and I think how great Shetland is.

peeriebryan
Spaghetti Junction on the outskirts of Birmingham! I think that's one of the most depressing places in Britain (appologies for the size of the photo, but I think the large scale is required in order to get the full effect) (I removed the Spaghetti Junction photo because its probably doing all the poor dial-up users heads in! The link is below for the curious) http://blogs.warwick.ac.uk/images/richardwinskill/2005/08/12/spaghetti_junction.jpg
Sam
pick anywhare in the word and at one point or another it will be your most depresive place - its all about how you run you like, family, and your personal situation. shetland has been the worst place for many but how many shetlanders do you know moved away only to come home because the place they went to was depresive? Yowe
I did that. In a round about way. Went away again with maximum strength though. It can be a good place to recharge your batteries. Maybe this should be on a different thread. ? I HATED Birmingham though.
BigMouth
I like Shetland but it really isn't the place for me. I would like to move away but poor pay here means that I live from day to day so feel as though I am trapped. I would like to go to Birmingham
