hei you all, i'm coming by plane to shetland in june. i'll travel from milan-italy. what do you suggest about the intermediate airport between milan and sumburgh, edimburgh or london or whatever?

do you also have to suggest low cost companies?

thank you very much in advance, michela.

Depends on the cost of flights from Milan but currently flights from Edinburgh to Sumburgh are generally cheaper than from Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness or indeed from London. Note cheaper rather than cheap since there is only one airline operating scheduled passenger flights to Shetland and that is Flybe and Shetland flights are rarely cheap.

Please be aware that buying a cheap flight from one airline and a second flight with another airline can leave you stranded if the first flight is late but that said I did notice that Ryanair offer flights from somewhere near Milan to Glasgow Prestwick airport which is somewhere near Glasgow but not the same airport as Flybe use for flights to Shetland.

Alternative is to catch the ferry from Aberdeen to Shetland which takes 12-14 hours but could be very pleasant in June. Good luck.

thank you very much, justme.

i've found a flight from milan malpensa to edimburgh with easy jet company (low cost). i have two hours of wait in edimburgh, then the flight to sumburgh with flybe company (cost: £ 65,99). i should be in lerwick at 7.20 p.m

the same for the returning.

do you know if edimburgh airport is just one?

i wouldn't travel by boat because i have seasickness :(

Just the one airport in Edinburgh so no problems changing flights. One correction to your schedule. You will arrive in Sumburgh Airport at 7.20pm but will then have to catch a bus, hire a taxi or beg a lift to get to Lerwick. Bus due in at 8.40pm. have fun.

:)

well, i would like to know so many things about your fascinating land.

as said, i will spend 20 days there and move freely with my back-pack from a place to another, and stay in b&b.

first, i will spend some days in lerwick, then move to the countryside. i havent' planned in details yet.

do you have to suggest places/pubs with traditional music/landscapes/crofts to see typical crops/b&b's/anything else?

about food: i'm vegan.. do you think it will be a problem?

are there pubs/restaurants where i can eat cereals and vegetables? hope so! :)

thank you in advance.

i would get your accomidation sorted as soon as you can. the bod system up here and the youth hostel maybe a good choice. if you really want to see shetland a car is really the best choice. public transport is limited and the weather even in june can be wet.

bring some warm clothes.

It is possible to see a lot of Shetland by bus and ferry. With careful planning you can get from the far south at Sumburgh to the top of Unst......or as top as the roads go. That said there are places the buses do not reach and a car would allow more time to explore your chosen places.

Do not expect to find lots of options for vegan food on Shetland but you will not starve. One thing to remember if you are prepared to eat something like muesli for breakfast or if you want white tea or coffee is that you might need to carry a supply of soya milk. Another thing to note is that the Fort Charlotte Guest House in Lerwick is above a butchers shop. My sister did not want to stay there and at the time she was only vegetarian although she is now vegan.

My partner and family frequently fly to and from Venice from Shetland via British Airways. I know this is the wrong side of Italy but seems to be the cheapest and most secure option with flights because you are only using one airline they need to get you to your destination if one of your flights is late.

I'm sure BA also fly from Milan so thats who i would recommend.

I wouldn't recommend EasyJet as every flight i have had with them has been late but i suppose you get what you pay for. Not good if you pay for a separate FlyBe to Shetland though which is the most expensive part of the journey.
