As good a one on Shetland News from a pelagic man ripping the SFPA et al doon sooth to shreds. Time for the boats to all run up the Jolly Roger, or maybe we should all go for independence instead?

Whatever way, I don't think it would be possible to make a greater muckle sphincter of everything ourselves as the powers that be from outside already have made it.

Totally agree.

I actually read the letter in Fishing News today and whilst it shows up the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency(SFPA) for what it is("Dad's Army" lol), I feel it's going to open a can of worms and severely sour relations with Faroe.

It saddens me that Shetland's fishermen can't speak out in favour of Home Rule rather than whining about the SFPA and Faroe.

Just a couple of weeks ago we were talking on here about the sheer number of foreign fishing boats in Shetland's waters, in particular the massive flag of convenience super trawlers but not once did I see any of our  fishermen speaking out against that.

Meanwhile the Christian í Grótinum is tied up at Dales Voe wondering why he has been arrested....

The headline reads "Confusion why Christian í Grótinum is under arrest".

True, but they need to hedge their bets, same as anyone else.

Anybody noticed peerie SFPA mean clambering around her with rulers and notebooks? I suspect her number plate is maybe been under scrutiny. It may (or may not) be "legal" but I would suspect the SFPA dudes are as impressed by it as Police Scotland are by gutter splattered ones on cars.

Meanwhile in Brussels

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-29987193

Sending a Conservative peer to represent Scottish fishermen at EU talks is a "slap in the face" for Scotland, the country's fisheries minister has said.

Richard Lochhead argued that he should have been allowed to stand in for UK Environment Secretary Liz Truss, who is unable to attend the meeting.

But the UK government has instead drafted in Lord de Mauley.

Two-thirds of the UK's fishing industry is based in Scotland.

Monday's talks in the Belgian capital are to focus on quotas for deep sea stocks, which disproportionately affect Scottish trawlers.

And Alistair Carmichael was on the news defending the UK government's actions!

^ Well, he would say that wouldn't he. How much of it is only point scoring for the Nats and Indy though, who knows.

Never heard of the Tory toff before, but despite fighting rhetoric while in opposition, Lochhead hasn't exactly excelled himself with aces up his sleeve or playing blinders at anything much since getting the reins, so I doubt it'll make much odds who goes.

Europe was a bad idea, we voted not to go in, and its long past time we were out, that's the only fix that'll ever work. Europe has always been too broken to work.

Hmm, to be fair that's just the Shetland Fisherman's Association.

But we can greet all we want, because it's not our Faroese cousins who are to blame - it's Shetland's seas being controlled by the EU.

As someone has posted on Facebook this morning either do something about it or stop moaning and complaining.

At least the Faroese have the guts to take control of their own affairs, unlike Shetland.

'Just'?

Suddenly, Shetland fishermens' opinion doesn't count? My word, what a volte face.......

Would that be because they've had the audacity to criticise Faroese fishing policy, by any chance, Kavi? :ponders:

Don't forget that Norway are equally as pished at the Faroese regarding this mackerel scam.

So who's it to be, Kavi, back your Faroese chums? Or back your Norwegian chums and 'just' the Shetland fishermen? - who you gonna back? Can't have it both ways.....  :thmbsup

I didn't say Shetland fishermens' opinions don't count.  I was simply making the point that one press release doesn't speak for every single fisherman.

Where did you see that Norway is as unhappy with Faroe?.

If the boot was on the other foot(legally entitiled to a quota in another sector) I can assure you Shetland fishermen would do the exact same as would any nation.

This speaks for itself:

"Jakob Vestergaard added that he could understand why local people were upset when seeing Faroese boats fishing off Shetland.

"We have our own policy while in Shetland fisheries management is handled by Brussels.

"We will not participate in the EU; that's the main difference between us and you in Shetland," he said.

Like it or lump it, the EU gave Faroe a quota of 47,000t of mackrel in EU waters.

I support Faroe and only wish we had a little of their fire and pride.

Sadly, I see little sign of that.

So, time to scrap the SSMO then, how does that work? does the Fishermen just stop paying money towards it? or do they just ignore it?

If the SSMO is scrapped then control of shellfish licencing would go back to bureaucrats in Edinburgh or further south. The SSMO has been hailed as a model that the whitefish industry should look to emulate for local control so I would be interested if you could point me to the Shetland Times where the skipper of the Cornucopia had his letter printed.
