From the Shetland News website - SIC bearing down feels good to some

Apparently the council have gone over-budget by £4.216 million this year, down from £4.27 million last year

One councillor said the news should inspire a “feel good factor” throughout the isles

I think it's great to hear that the council have overspent £4.216 million of our money. I feel like all my Christmases have come at once. It's a warm, fuzzy feeling

But how much more of our money have they wasted this year?

read the opening post Sherlock.

I think that's a reasonable question.

There may well be a lot of money within the budget limits that could have been spent in much more suitable ways.

Money makes the world go round.....The difficult thing for me is to decide is whether the money is being truly wasted. Maybe it could be better spent. Does all this money stay in Shetland? If it is mostly wages then it is probably boosting the economy. If it is being spent on the needy, the aged and education then it can't be all bad. If someone is siphoning it off unnecessarily then that should be investigated. Is someone saying that the budget set is right or wrong? It may be that a cut acroos the boards is simply not feasible. There's plenty signs of affluence around Shetland, new houses, roads, schools (too many?). Is it really that bad or is it the public perception thats bad. If the councillors got to grips with the issues instead of saying what they think their voters want to hear then we might get a reality check. I am wary for instance that certain businessess seem to get handouts from the charitable trust. If their business is so good , why do they need public money. Sometimes I think it would be better if we disposed of the reserve fund and didn't have the rest of the country thinking we're loaded. Dust aff da makkin machine etc...

I think it would be good to see some money spent on jazzing the town up a bit. Perhaps new street lighting, nice seating areas in and around town, big flower boxes, good toilet facitlities in Lerwick and outwith town. I think demoloshing some of the eye sores you see in Lerwick would be a good start. The likes of that old hut thing next to the Salvation Army place would be a start..............

i agree wi judge. it wid be great if the waterfront looked a bit better as well.

you sail intae da liks o Thoshaven and it looks all idyllic and wonderful, quaint, but in a good way.

here, wi da exception o sum, it's all factories and decrepit looking auld buildings. spruce it up a bit. for a place sae reliant on tourism, it really disna seem datna bothered aboot how it looks

On the subject of a council overspend.

£3000 for 19 light fittings in an office. Is that value for money????

I heard this 3rd party but I was shocked. There are about 19 light fittings in my house and I could replace the whole lot for about £250 - £300.

Since yesterday was US independance Day, it made me think about the film "Independance Day", when the president asked how Area 51 was funded.. The reply was something like, " Do you think a hammer costs $300 and a toilet seat $500"

Now I'm not saying that this council is corrupt, although every one else says they are, but just how much does a flourescent light fitting cost these days. ???? Or how much does a luxury ...... Goodlad,,.... No, I won't even think it , ,, But I won't delete the thought either

I's not unknown for someone in charge of contractors to tell them to up the price near to the financial year end, to use up their budget. Yes, I have it on good authority, no I can't divulge how.

The shame is the excess contactors charges can't be hived off to another budget heading to ease their deficit instead of liniing a private contractors pockets.

We ought to change the capital town again to rejuvinate somewhere else. Somewhere north of Lerwick. Start from scratch and do it properly. Not another Tingwall though - hideous hole that it is.

I nominate Hillswick, capital of the Republic of Northmavine. ;)

The reasons are stated as follows:

1. We have Initiative at the Edge status as we are an endangered species and need inward investment.

2. We don't have any pubs here now and perhaps if we were made capital of Shetland we could have a pub.

3. It was hot and sunny all day here today, whereas it was misty all day in Lerwick.

4. Following on from 3, makes sense to then make Scatsta the main airport as it was gloriously hot'n'sunny there today whereas the Sakchai team couldn't get out of Sumburgh and Scatsta had to leap into the breach.

5. Following on from 4, we could have daily papers in the summer, whereas there was a big empty table in Conochies today.

In conclusion, I propose that Hillswick be the capital of Shetland.

No Fifi,

I can't accept your argument, because Hillswick was too damned hot today.

I had to do a job there and it was not pleasant... I sweated my gonads off.. :D

I vote Virkie for capital of Shetland, There is always fog to keep us cool, the councillor is to daft to be corrupt, and we have more that one outlet for mind bending consumables. :)
