Things to do in Orkney

Recommended Posts

Bad weather - Highland Park distillery and the cathedral + lots of nice shops and cafes in Kirkwall. Also Stromness for quaint streets, shops, cafes, the museum and the Pier Arts Centre.

Good weather - Hoy. Fantastic long walk through the valley between the mountains, and to the Old Man of Hoy. The old WW2 museum is good too.

North, the Inter-island ferry runs are good - longish journeys with lovely seascapes to gaze at.

Lots of other things too...

Cancel your boat/flights there and get out of this as soon as you can!

Ignore this, sorry werder

Orkney is fantastic! Get yourself to the tourist office, they are very helpful and will give you recomendations. The Italian Chapel, The Old Man of Hoy, Scappa etc etc. Plenty of walks and trails all over, Wideford Hill is a good one in Kirkwall but the tourist office will sort you out.

As far as pubs goes, they are FAR ahead of lerwick/Shetland, our pubs are an absolute disgrace and embarrasement compared to Kirkwall. Skippers and The Shore have varied menu's serving great food from midday to early evening, The Shore's breakfasts are particularly good.

Have a great trip

No.......Orkney is a fine place to visit but a day trip to Scotland could be a good option especially on Pentland Ferries.
are the pentland ferries cheap?
Don't know but it is an interesting boat.

Always slightly cheaper than the Northlink ferry (before resident discounts, anyway). Be aware that Pentland run into Gills Bay (nothing there - literally) - not John O'Groats or Scrabster/Thurso - so take a car.

I wouldn't bother going over to Caithness via Northlink with a view to just wandering around Scrabster/Thurso and then coming back - it's only a very small town and a bit limited to say the least....

Orkney? Take a car. Stuff like Skara Brae, Maes Howe and the Italian chapel are all in different areas of the main isle and the bus service is about the same as up here. But I always liked Orkney.

Albert Hotel in Kirkwall has a good bar. It burnt down after I last visited (not my fault) but is reported to be just as good after the refurb as it was before. :P The craic in Stromness and Kirkwall pubs is light years ahead of anything in Lerwick - with the possible exception of the Lounge bar, that is.

Go for it!
