Funeral notices are posted in several places in Lerwick and in the Parish where the people have lived or have connections. I for one would like to see something online as I'm not in the town every week and have missed a few funerals I would have attended as I hadn't seen any notices. Perhaps the calendar could be moulded to provide such a service? If anyone wants to take the initiative and get back in contact through PM technologically it will certainly be possible. The way it used to work (and I presume still does) was that how many funeral notices were put out, and where they went was a matter between the undertaker and whoever was ordering the funeral. I can't remember if the undertaker charged for each notice arranged, but I seem to think they did. Potential "problems" being that for the details to appear on Shetlnk it would really need the permission of whoever was ordering a funeral to avoid the possibility of stepping on toes at a delicate time, and obtaining that and the relevant info can only realistically be done via the undertakers. The work involved by the undertaker for such a set up, I would imagine would be viewed as the equivalent of arranging one additional funeral notice, and if the undertakers do charge per notice, who's going to pay? Would either Shetlink or enough of the people ordering funerals consider it "worthwhile" enough to pay for it to make it viable, as unless it operates at as close to 100% coverage as possible, its worth is going to be very limited. mogling Posted October 13, 2013 Report Share Posted October 13, 2013 I too would like to have known about deaths and funerals at the time, so I could have either attended or sent condolences, but sadly didn't learn about till much later. Goudies display all the funeral notices in their window so they are in 'the Public Domain' anyway, but you would need to get into town a couple of times a week every week to keep up with the notices. I have been meaning to speak to Anne to find out if it would be posible for funeral notices to be posted on a website - which you could have to register, be approved and then log onto to view -much like Shetlink I suppose.
