MuckleJoannie
A consultation has begun about the the proposed new harbour at Nigg Bay, Aberdeen. There is an email address to send in comments and I have suggested that the inclusion of a new roro berth for Northlink should be a priority. The link is here. http://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/masterplanning/ More information on the project here http://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/nmsruntime/saveasdialog.asp?lID=64864&sID=2991
Hobbiniho
why do you consider a new berth for northlink to be a priority?? it would be a complete pain/cost to get from nigg bay to aberdeen city centre as at the moment it is a 5 minute walk to the city centre and the bus and train station
MuckleJoannie
It would mean better boats designed for the route and no cancellations because the harbour was closed with easterly gales.
Scorrie
And how do people get to Aberdeen centre/railway/airport? I think that the amount of actual 'closures' are a very, very small figure annually. Certainly not enough to warrant a wholesale shift to another port. Also, providing the infrastructure for this new terminal would be very, very costly - so who's going to pay for it? SIC? Nope. Holyrood? Nope. Gorgonzola Butt-cheese
Aberdeen Port would be investing for the future using the substantial profits they have made out of the oil industry. All oil related traffic will be moved out to Nigg Bay , then they can open up the old harbour to take in cruise ships so that Aberdeen city centre can profit from a massive influx of cruise ships passengers ashore for the day with money to spend. The plan for the new harbour breakwaters means vessels will enter on a south westerly heading and it wont get closed because of easterlies or south easterly gales.Prospect of bigger and better boats to service the north isles.A well planned bus service can take pedestrians to the city centreOther traffic , private and freight can get of the boat and clear of Aberdeen without choking the city centre, and at present it;s fairly chock a block.A much needed development from every angle..... JohanofNess
I'd put a decent sized bet on that AHB aren't even entertaining suggestions to move Northlink to the Nigg expansion. They're doing this about 20 year too late though. Scorrie

viblir
No sign of a new ro-ro set up, or any refrence to the north isles boats in the bits I read, should we worry?
JustMe
Took some finding to get this " 3.3.19Of note is the fact that in the early years’ visits from cruiseships will occur at Nigg as opposed to the existing harbour. Areasfor coach parking and the ability to transfer passengers to thecity centre will feature in the growth of this sector. Similarly, ifthe passenger ferry and freight vessel from the northern isles arein future consolidated to a single ship then this too would likelyrequire berthing at Nigg."" Urabug
Well, JustMe if that happens then what will it be 2 or 3 boats per week,or less time in port and faster unloading and loading times. From my point of view would make little differ but certainly could change some folks travel arrangements. Not sure about Nigg but cannot see it make a lot of differ, its so handy where the boat berths at present if you are on foot.
MuckleJoannie
The expansion is going ahead and should start in the new year. According to Radio Shetland tonight there will be a new berth for the North Isles ferries. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-38376878
tirvaluk
And they say it can take bigger ferries
Kavi Ugl
And bang goes what was left of Shetand's oil industry...... Much of the West of Shetland fields are already serviced from Aberdeen, Peterhead and Scrabster. I might be wrong but my guess is this will development will allow the big ships/projects that came to Shetland because the above harbours couldn't handle them to use Aberdeen. The oil companies will consolidate it all in Aberdeen and Peterhead. Bigger ferries, but at what over-all cost.......
