MuckleJoannie
Something I have recently notice the Lerwick chip shops doing is splashing on vinegar before the salt. In my 50 odd years of eating from chip shops I have never seen this before. Someone in one of the chip shops said this was the norm in certain parts of Scotland. To me it doesn't seem right. It would seem to make sense doing it in that order. Would the vinegar not wash off the salt otherwise?! I've never considered it before and I may have to break my healthy eating new year's resolution to visit a chip shop in the name of research
George.
Salt and vinegar or vinegar and salt? Neither, salt and sauce is the only way to go. Perhaps a splash of vinegar as well but it's not worth getting uptight about.
Scorrie
Virtually all the chippies I've been in across the UK (and believe me, I like my fish and chips) use vinegar before salt, otherwise the vinegar just washes all the salt straight off. The other way round is heresy. Acid
Suffererof1crankymofo
As a teenager I worked in a fish and chip shop and was taught to put the salt on first.I don't eat fish and chips with salt and/or vinegar, it's really annoying to be asked and before you've had chance to give a reply, the assistant has already whacked them on and then gets the huff if you ask for a fresh lot. Frances144
I hate it when they splash the vinegar on the fish and then the batter sticks to the paper and becomes inedible wasting a good amount of crunchy batter. Grrrr! Vinegar goes on chips. Fish on top.
