Knab Site

I would have liked a local team of architects to have got this job(KNAB SITE), not that I have any real problem with "sooth moothers" but  why does everything get awarded to outside firms

Considering the level of education here in Shetland there must be some excellent architects and designers already here in Shetland with local knowledge that would and could do a brilliant job, especially of a site that they were probably taught on.giving them additional inspiration.

Just another "kick in the teeth " from the council to the Shetland folk.

What happened to the alleged condition that the site could only be used for educational purposes, or it would revert to the previous owners?

Was this rubbish, or have the successors to the original owners granted a waive on that condition, or is this just the SIC once again crashing ahead doing whatever they feel like in the hope they succeed before anyone gets it together to stop them, Bressa Brig stylee?

Now that is another thing I had forgot about, but then again what is the point in educating us here in Shetland it would seem if your an architect, and for that mater many other professions the work will be awarded to outsiders ,therefore or scholars will have to find work outwith Shetland as many ,many have already done over the years.

Dis is aw wrang.

Looking at an old map of Lerwick the AEI site was just the area between the original building and Twageos Road. The surrounding area looks like parks that have been bought up over time for the extensions.

7N Architects includes David Adamson and Partners a local firm.

Next time read the article properly before allowing your stomach to rumble.

Further more the choosen company are experts in this field with a proven track record on similar projects, a south firm is a benefit to all local industries when the workers travel here using our accomidation and spending there pennies in local businesses.

There is plenty of work here for local firms and they also do project work south so the narrow minded thinking is pointless.

Yes I certainly did read the article and was aware of some local involvement but this is still another "outside" establishment when i'm sure there are plenty of qualified locals who would do just as good a job.

Nothing narrow minded about it but if we do not provide our "educated " with local jobs then they leave the islands to set up homes where they find work  probably never to return.

This is a big loss to small communities.

Sour grapes on my side and the same on yours by the sound of it.

Fair enough I get your point and I probably did over react a bit and let my guts rumble

But I honestly don't think a lot of young people move away just because of jobs , lets be honest they go south do Uni and find a far more enjoyable lifestyle with regards to meeting new people, things to do, the ease of transport and holidays and in general much more scope for enjoyment.

Spend a few weekends around Shetland pubs and clubs, sample a local sports event in comparison to a mainland one for atmosphere, try taking your family off this island without paying £££££, find a decent gig to go to etc etc the list goes on, don't get me wrong great place to stay for safety and the outdoors but it is seriously lacking in other departments and that is the reason they go and don't return.

How much money is expected to be spent on this Knab Site, surely this will have the most influence on the whole project.

But hopefully not more White Houses.or for that matter more white contraptions like we have at the Clickamin Centre, and i hope they keep who ever was responsible for the Esplanade cock up out of it.

  • New hospital
  • Small prison
  • New courthouse/police station

Alternatively:-

  • Casino
  • Strip club

What the architects will probably decide Shetland wants:-

  • Mini-Mareel
  • Replacement Isleburgh
  • Multi-purpose use 'educational' hub with 'affordable' rent space for those in the creative industries, such as artists' living/studio spaces, chill-out rooms for yoga and pilates, community coffee room with an inter-active interpretative centre.
