Late 70's Malcolmson's Bakery "Golden-seed bread"

Does anybody else remember the 'Golden-seed' bread that Malcolmson's used to make-

be about 78/79?

When you cut a slice you could see the round puckles cut through the middle and it tasted lovely.

I have asked a few folk that worked there at the time, but nobody

seems to know what these seeds/puckles were?

 

I make bread, and would love to know what these puckles could be to

try adding them to a loaf. I use all kinds of seeds, but nothing comes

close to these.

Any suggestions welcome!

I can't think of anything like that being baked there in my time, I left at the end of June '78. May well have been some new line they started with when they got the new place out Commercial Road though, which wasn't that long after I left.

 

Trying to remember who baked for them in the time I was there who might remember, most I can think of have long since passed on etc though, unless for maybe Mitnie Simpson, although I'm not sure if he didn't leave before the new bakeshop started up, and Stephen Leask who had the business uplatterly.

George Anderson was the foreman for most of the 70's at Malcolmson's. Other eens that were there were John Mathieson, George McMaster, John Leask, Charlie Fordyce, John Robertson, Jimmy Griffiths.And loads more that irna living noo.

Thanks for all that - got me thinking, I'd forgotten a lot of those folk.

right enough, it maybe was after the new place had opened?

I left my saturday job there a few weeks after it opened, lost track of my years -

was that about '79? They hadn't started selling it by then.

 

I mind eating it at my Granny's - don't think they sold it for long?

 

I did ask Steven ages ago but he said it had come in a mix, so they hadn't

added anything to know.

 

Turkestan loaf- think I've seen that in the COOP - looked up recipes but no

 seeds I haven't tried already.

It was more like peerie Yellow split peas or something, I mind picking them

out to eat on their own as they were nice.

I'm reasonably sure they'd moved to Commercial Road by 79ish. Bain's new shed was being built and plans were well advanced for the conversion in the last few months I was there in the spring of '78, it was just a case of Bain's moving, then it was going to be all systems go.

 

Could try asking Hilda or Will o' da Brig if they can mind, both would still have been around on the selling side of things, and Hilda especially tended to keep abreast of what was what.

Turkestan loaf was certainly available in the 90s and perhaps even into the noughties.  One of my favourite breads.

Could it have been kibbled soya? This in an ingredient in Soya and Linseed Burgen bread available from the Coop (I think).
