They claim to have recieved "funding" so, it must be a "budget" thing.

What gets me is;

Why couldn't they just erect a good old-fashioned "3 walls and a bench" type shelter ?

Instead, we are going to get something that is either a yoal, a broch, or a squeezebox (?).

I suppose they just had to pay something to a "design consultant".  Little wonder that they are in the sh*t financially.

Who cares if you don't live in Lerwick. After all, two thirds of the population don't get it so the other third can....

Well I don't possess a magic bowl but it is highly unlikely even when they cannot feed the beast it's favorite food anymore they will allow it to die.

I guess anything that gets people out and about walking is a good thing healthwise.

They have probably tapped a source of funding from central government or EU that is ring fenced.

Should be cheap enough to put something up made of say, oh I don't know, something a bit wind resistant, like stone..

We have lots of stone, its about £35 a ton isn't it ?

Or folk could just donate a rock or two when they pass. :-)

These seem more suitable to me, or perhaps a combination of designs, as you want something with a roof for when its raining cat & dogs..

But not the kind of roof that blows away in high winds..

Please please for goodness sake do not apply common sense.

This has to be modern art not a pile of old stones.

I'm left wondering how this proposed shelter will be 'healthy' - considering its most prolific users are most likely to be alkis looking to get pissed and sleep it off in relative peace, smackheads shooting up and adolescent teens performing carnal experimentation.

Money would be better spent else where, no need for Shelters, a few wooden benches, fix the paths if they need it, perhaps low energy lighting and bins for dog waste, thats enough

I

Yeah but they'll be doing it in the healthy sea air with the benefit of a good view, so good for the soul!

I wonder if folk here have been too busy getting torn into the one design they don't like to notice the others ;-)

I quite like the 'Yoal Shelters'

Reusing unused rowing boats from around the islands to create a series of shelters along the path (single or in groups of 2 or 3)

Is this a prototype of a new type of public toilet. A seat and a hole in the wall......what else could it be?

I walk around the Sletts and Knab regularly and haven't encountered any of the 'clientele' you describe here out for walks, on the benches or lying 'ahind da dykes'. It's a very sociable and popular route to wander along and I dare say there are more suitable, and more private, places around town if you wanted to be shooting up drugs or 'courting'

Good on Healthy Shetland for securing the funding!

^....but give them a lee and the name of a roof over their heads, and you attract a whole other demographic.Especially now that the SIC closed down most of the pish hooses.

I'm more than familiar with the Sletts path, used it as a short cut many a time back in the day, hellish place if the wind was anywhere near the SE, but otherwise fine enough for what it was, back then anyway. A rough footpath through a generally pretty bleak wilderness, but at least it didna feel quite so 'toonie' as takin Scy Rd afore you.

I think I'd prefer it if the NHS did the job properly they're there to do, look after bodies, and leave the looking after souls to those more specialised in that field.
