  1. What has happened to the pub scene in Lerwick? Why are the pubs all so quiet these days, even on a Friday and Saturday night they aren't 'busy' like they used to be. On a Friday and Saturday nearly all the bars were busy right from tea time until 11pm (or later), even during the afternoon on Saturdays you would meet plenty of folk out. Thursday nights also used to be busy, with lots of pool teams out and I remember Flints being packed out later on on the Thursday night with live bands playing. Posers even used to be open on a Wednesday! I have spoken to a lot of folk who say they don't go out because nobody else goes out anymore. Why has this happened? Is it too expensive, is there nowhere good to go, is there no incentive to go out anymore, or what other reasons? A few questions: How would you get more folk out? What would make you go out? What would you like to see in Lerwick?
  2. Hi, Just reading the report in the Shetland Times online about possible 7 day working at the new AHS and noticed at the bottom of the report there is a comment about the Freefield Centre: "Regarding other vacated buildings, Mr Sinclair said the former Olnafirth Primary School was now “leased out on commercial terms” and the Freefield Centre in Lerwick had been “disposed of”. The council no longer had any interest in it, he added." What does that mean? I don't recall seeing it being offered for sale like other ex-council buildings (Leog, St Clements, Craigielea, etc), does this mean the council got nothing (or very little) for this prime site in town? Also, who now owns it?
  3. What's happened to the posting of football scores on here? I know that a lot of games have been postponed due to weather but there must be some games getting played. I'd post them myself but I'm not in Shetland right now to know what the scores are.
  4. I have still not made my mind up if I am totally for or against the VE project but if the wind farm is going to go ahead regardless of community involvement, then we are better to be a part of it so at least Shetland is getting something back. Found an interesting article yesterday though about the viability of such projects.... http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/news/special-reports/article.html?in_article_id=523986&in_page_id=108 Particularly interesting are the final six paragraphs which I have attached below for those who are fed up reading large reports! <"All over the EU, other politicians are waking up to the dead-end to which this madness has been leading us. The Danes, who have built more wind turbines per head than anyone, have realised the idiocy of a policy that has given them the highest electricity prices in Europe, while they have to import much of their power from abroad. In Spain, their rush for wind and solar power has proved a national disaster. In Germany, having built more turbines than any other country in the world, they are now building new coal-fired stations like crazy. In Holland, meanwhile, they have now given two fingers to the EU by slashing all their renewables subsidies. Only in Britain is our political class still so imprisoned in its infatuation with wind that it is prepared to court this dangerously misguided pipedream. ">
  5. Only one week to go until the 'Quiz Knights' return for their Halloween Party! Get your quiz teams together and dig out your old fancy dress.
  6. The 'Quiz Knights' are returning for a special one off Fancy Dress Halloween Quiz and Disco at Norscot on Friday 29th October. They used to do a quiz in the Marlex on a Monday a few years back then did their special Halloween quizzes at Norscot for a few years. Always a good night and not too serious! You don't have to be too clever to take part as there are loads of prizes and games between rounds, so even the 'younger' ones have as much chance of winning as the seasoned quiz addict. You can have teams of up to six players. See classifieds for tickets and more info. I'll see you there!!
  7. Does anybody have a contact number for a chimney sweep in Lerwick? Tried searching in directory and yellow pages but no such thing. (***Mod Edit - Moved to Consumer Advice & Resources***)
  8. Just noticed this thread and was wondering if St Clements is being used or has been earmarked for anything yet? Also, does anybody know if the old Gym hall in King Harald St is being used and who owns it? I remember playing football there with the Boys Brigade about 20yrs ago and occassionally going there with the school for PE. Two prime sites in the middle of town, not really being used to their potential it seems.
  9. Have the fixtures for this season's Works League been drawn up yet? Thought season was supposed to start on 17th April. I've tried looking on most of the Works League club's websites but there is nothing there.
  10. Sad to here the Malakoff have folded. Where have all the players gone? Is this partly due to the emergence of 3 'New' teams? Does this mean that the Works League will now not have to split half way through the season or will both Cups be contested by all remaining teams now?
  11. Does any one have a video of 'Tonights Gonna Pea a Good Night' Squad 21, not seen it on You-tube yet? Heard they were pretty good
  12. Shetland Banks 1 - Wrultizers 3 Half Time 0-1 Banks scored through deflected Dave Thomson shot. Tizers goals from a Danny Carter hatrick. Richard Poleson (GK) sent off for Banks.
  13. Does anybody know if they have made out a fixtures list for the Northwards Works league yet? and if so is there anywhere online it can be found?
  14. The council should have incorporated a full size multi-weather pitch into the new high school plan. With all the re-thinking on the school design this could surely have been put in.
