  1. Has anyone else noticed Graffiti around Mounthooly Street in Lerwick? I've notice a few bits and I wondered if there is a problem elsewhere, I am going to report it to the police I think

Just you go and report it then... No need to tell everyone in Shetland that your going to do it!!

    Pointless post.

  2. its not like they went from shetland to orkney just for the beef!

    How do you know that?

There has not been anything concrete that says they defiantly were on exercise in Orkney at the time. They could have been on exercise in Fair Isle at the time and popped down then picked the shipment up on the way back.

Then again they could have been on exercise in Wick at the time and popped in on the way North.

CHC has confirmed that they HAD been on exercise but this had been concluded prior to the landing in the field.

This is why we need to wait for the full facts.

  3. There are a lot of facts that we don't know.

Where they on training in specifically in Orkney?

Where they specifically training on rough ground landings?

Coincidental, that they happened to be training when they knew the order would be ready. I doubt that they just dropped in and said "Any chance we can get £400 of sirloin please"

Although I am sitting on the fence with this one until all the facts become clear, it can not escape my mind that CHC, being the size it is and with a reputation to watch over etc, it will no doubt have procedures in place for this kind of event.

We all assume the pilot may loose his job. It may be he has been suspended until the matter blows over.

We all jump to conclusions. Maybe we should wait for full facts before we start to defend or slate someone or something.

    Just a thought.

  4. Not sure on that... But my old man used to be in the Lerwick fire brigade and I mind him telling me about an offshore boat fire which he was winched onto as part of the offshore unit, an I can't help but think that untill you have dangled off an inch and a half thick wire under extreme pressure 50 feet above the north sea in a force 9 gale then no man in any office can criticise these men. And the pilot is under as much pressure if not more not to 'f' up and put lives at risk...

I totally agree with you on that point.

After the "Save Shetland Coastguard" campaign this is not the kind of press coverage Shetland Coastguard would want.

It's appears to be an Innocent gesture or action that has been blown out of all proportion.

I have a friend to owns the Orkney dive boat "Valkyrie" and she has been up for jaunts around the islands with the helicopter crews. On one occasion I mind her telling me about when they were on a dive expedition and the weather turned, it was rather chilly and the Helicopter was on training from Sumburgh and did a winch exercise and in the process dropped off some bacon rolls for them. You don't see that being front page of the Sun or Times.

Up most respect to the crew of an invaluable service.

  5. Police are appealing to motorists to keep their speed down after three separate crashes on black ice this morning.

All happened within a short distance of each other on the A971 Tresta to Walls road. No-one was injured in any of the accidents.

The first incident was at 8.08am when a council van crashed into a barrier, coming to rest at an angle and blocking the road. Fire appliances from Walls, Lerwick and Scalloway attended the scene.

The second was at 8.15am on the same stretch of road when a private van skidded on the ice and came to rest on its roof.

Police say there was a third incident on the same road later in the morning, although no details were available.

They are urging motorists to watch their speed and drive in accordance with conditions on the road.

Sign of things to come! :?

  7. No internet access at all in Gott, neither me or the house next to me can get on. We are both with AOL and they say its a BT fault coz

They cant even dial into the line to perform a check!

For Marv, as you guessed Gott exchange!

    GRRRR!!!

    Sent via mobile :(

  8. Seems to be theres still alot of folk on the gott exchange still having major connection problems.

Anyone else finding this still an issue ?

Gott exchange = NO INTERNET GRRR

Saw 2 BT vans parked ootside the exchange hut, but still pi$$ poor internet. 25mins to load Shetlink, so went with 3G on the mobile.

  9. Last nights ferry to Aberdeen is still sitting off Abz waiting to get into port. When will the powers that be get it into thweir thick heads that Aberdeen is no longer suitable for the ferries!

Just heard from someone on board that because its so rough the harbour is closed until tomorrow morning where it will be reviewed, going to be a long night for all on the Northlink.

  10. Well it looks as if the Rozzers have been busy rounding up the Heroin couriers, they got £11k's worth the other week and another £20k's worth today. Makes you wonder how much of this sharn is coming into Shetland.

If I had a hat on, I would surely take it off for them. Which remids me, I need to buy a new hat now that the weather has taken a turn for the worse.

Good work i would say! Better to nip it in the bud than have 32K worth of drugs on the streets of Lerwick, quite a shock to think there is that much on our streets on such a small island.

  11. ^^ Hasn't that always been their form. Drunk and incapables....excuse me, one of yer number plate lights are oot......yer number plate's too stoory tae read.....

Well you're not far off the mark there Ghostrider re the stoory plates, heard of an incident the other day where a young driver was followed into a one way street by a police car with blue light flashing. The car driver was asked to get out and then asked if he/she knew why he/she had been stopped. The car driver answered " no " then was asked to look at a number plate on a nearby vehicle and asked to " spot the differance ".

Wait for it :- The letters on the number plate of the pulled in drivers car were " squint " !!!!

and wirna both police officers really prood efter yun !

Not just me that hates it as well then! I canna stand the "racer" image number plates, in weird colours, weird sizes, weird fonts etc. Yes its illegal, they are regulated for a reason. He/She should be lucky they didnt get a ticket for it, i have seen many young drivers in at the garage getting them changed before heading back to the polis to inspect them and sign the ticket off.

  12. ....From personal experience, the patrol car hidden just up the hill from the school entrance has made a considerable difference to the speed of most motorists....

That's where they go wrong. The cop car should not be hidden, it should be parked up some place where you would have to be blind to not see it.

Only a complete fool would consider speeding when there is a highly visable cop car parked up.

When the Police try to hide their car it looks like they are trying to catch speeders to boost their solved crimes quota and raise some money for the xmas party* rather than deter speeding.

*I know the money dosen't go to the cops xmas party before someone points this out, just used this as a figure of speech.

Well if it was visable, then everyone would slow down, JUST because the police was there and not because of the kids coming out of school.

If people couldnt see the police car then they would just carry on their normal habits and the police could catch people doing their blatant speed through a controlled spped zone!

  13. Would Police time not be better spent trying to catch real criminals- like Heroin dealers, thieves, vandals etc?

But of course, that doesn't increase revenue for the Corporation ;)

What a poor attitude to have!

I would rather they be treating the heroin issue in shetland but at the same time the saftey of our children is another issue they are dealing with.

I would rather know that when my child comes out from school that the drivers going past arent blasting up the hill possibly putting the children at risk.

At the end of the day a crime is a crime and if it happens right infront of the police then damn right they should deal with it.

  14. Ok, it might not be the best in the northern isles, but it does work in more than just the south end.. It works as far up as north roe, and that's about as far north as you can go on the mainland.

My mate has a contract phone with orange and hates it, no signal anywhere other than the south end. If he stands on the street he struggles to get 2 bars! Whit use is dat noo!

  15. http://www.shetland-news.co.uk/2010/October/news/Search%20for%20missing%20teenager.htm

    Police requesting searchers.

Anyone who can assist in the search is asked to contact Lerwick police station on 01595 692110 or 0800 555111

I am pretty sure they are not asking for the public to start looking and searching for her. I would think the tem anyone who can assist means anyone with any information is urged to contact police!

  16. There is a woman in Hal burgess that does them. My sister got one done and it's brilliant!

From what ive heard, she is ment to be really really good.

She has just set up her studio at her house and is fully booked for the next wee while.

  17. And they wonder why people on a whole think they are all a bunch o p***ks is it any wonder Styumpie..!!!

Like all walks of life it only takes a few bad apples! I dont think we should tar all officers with the same stick. Unfortunately you will always get the odd one who joins for the wrong reasons and loves the power they think they have. I came accross one recently, but in the main I have always found the majority of officers in Shetland to be professional, curtious and helpfull. Those who have a bad experience with particular officers should lodge a complaint, then something can be done to weed out those who dont carry out the job as they should do!!

Totally Agree.. Only takes a few bad apples.. On the whole i think the officers in shetland are ok, you go down to the mainland and you see alot worse!
