  1. An extra Thank You to the Posties struggling along with frozen feet and fingers, trying to get a hold of things as thin as cards when there's no feeling left in your hands is not easy, or pleasant!

Also, a thank you to the Undertakers and Gravediggers, Ministers & Kirk Officers who have to cope outside during sad occasions too.

A big hand for all the crofters, farmers and all the folk who struggle out to look after animals, whether it's hens, sheep, kye, or folk who work in the Cattery / Kennels.

Much appreciation for the the Dairymen, Milk Tanker drivers & Milk deliverers too- keeping us supplied with the lovely Shetland Milk!

I'd like to thank all of them too. Their service is often forgotten but not un-noticed!

Who I wouldn'd like to thank however.....is the person on the council mini-snow plough who has left the streets of Scalloway in such a damned mess with slush and ice.

On a lot of roads and pavement's in lerwick you'd be hard pushed to imagine that there had been any snowfall at all. Sadly to say that's not the case at all in Scalloway, where the snow on the MAIN STREET on the pavements is near half a foot deep.

It's an outright disgrace in this day and age that our streets can't be cleared when, at the same time, the council are working feverishly to keep LERWICK's roads and pavements clear.

Did someone from the council once tell me that there was no bias toward lerwick in these matters? Or was that remark perhaps 'tongue in cheek'?

I'll leave the rest of you to make up your minds on that count.....

  2. A bit late, but how about this alternative idea ...

Instead of closing the secondary department at Scalloway and bussing 100+ pupils to the AHS each day, why not keep Scalloway open and bus 100+ pupils the other way, TO Scalloway.

A bold idea, maybe, (and clearly there would be many details to thrash out) but on the face of it there are many of benefits:

    - Scalloway would stay open, which is what the community obviously wants, and would become more 'viable' in the long term (in terms of cost-per-pupil, and such like)

    - The overcrowding problems at the AHS would be reduced, perhaps leading to improved comfort/morale/etc

    - The transport costs are no higher than they are with the proposal that was voted through today

    - It might even allow the SIC to spend a lot less on the new AHS, which wouldn't need to be so big.

    Just an idea.

I said something similar in an earlier post except my idea was a little more radical......Build the new school IN Scalloway....there's no want for ground on the existing site what with a large field on the west side of the school.

  3. The principal behind towing the same net in the same place at the same time might be a perfectly good idea if you did it a fish tank. I know exactly why they do it but the sea is constantly changing so it is a halfwited way of trying to find out about fish stocks. And if you think towing the same net by two different boats especially if the second one is bigger than the first is going to give an accurate picture of fish stocks then you clearly havnt a clue about catching fish either.

If a fisherman goes off shoots his net and gets nothing . He moves and moves again until he finds fish. If he still isnt catching anything he tweeks his net till he does catch fish.

If these scientists go off shoot their net and get nothing then theres no fish .

Fishing is a highly skilled profession that takes years of experience to get right. And the scientific community should harnace that experience.

The scotia should be tied up and these so called scientists should go off with real fishermen . Then they might start to learn something. IMHO..

    Well said.

  4. these so called 'scientists' aren't interested in the livelyhoods of our, or anyone else's fishermen for that matter.

i don't know where they get their figures from but i can only assume that they must do some fishing of their own in recognised fishing grounds, but what if the fish have moved? a scientist would hardly know where the best fishing would be.

  5. I said the other day, in another thread, that I was having trouble playing videos, I just checked my connection speed here, (it's easy and free)

when we first got wireless broadband, we were getting 8 mb, it's now down to anywhere between 850 kb to 1.6 mb, I don't know what the hell's going on but I will be on the phone to Orange in the morning (it's always too busy at night) No wonder videos wont play

Orange......I'll never go back to them again after the hassle I had.

1st, they put up the price of my package.

2nd, they changed the package that I was on from a completely unlimited 8mb to an 8mb package with a 10gb download limit without notifying me.

3rd, when I unwittingly went over the download limit (without being told I had) they capped the speed of my connection within peak hours (6pm to 12am) to 512k.

Only when I rang them to request my mac code so that I could switch to BT did they offer to take the cap off my account.

By that time I'd had more than enough of them and I was going, no matter how much begging they did.

  6. There's a fair few similar post-WW2 ordinance stories in recent times:

Can anybody else recall that during the severe drought in the 70'S , when the Sandy Loch (pre-dam times - which is why the dam was built) got so low that Trebister Loch was routed in by the ditch as a top up (still evident today), a stalwart member of the trooting community (who shall remain nameless) walked into the Lerwick Police Station with a landmine he'd found in the "ebb", plonked it on the counter and proclaimed "dis could be dangerous - better dat you look efter it".

    .

Much the same thing happened at the Scalloway School some years back.

A Boy found a mortar shall and took it to school and set it on the teachers desk

hehe yeah...i know the lad who did that :)

  7. I don't want to cause a fuss

Why is it that whenever anyone says they do not want to cause a fuss, they either (a) have just caused one, or (B) are about to do so. It is like the expression "with all respect..." which is only ever used just before something disrespectful is said.

But i really don't see the problem in calling it the Shetlands. Personally i feel it gives it a bit of character.

Fine. Just go ahead. In the same way I'm sure a number of people will see no problem in calling you a troll, or worse.

mo often than not, it's not any one person who causes the fuss, it all our resident trolls that live here...

  8. High harbour dues charged locally were a main factor in making the Norrona visits unviable. If Scalloway harbour is to be dredged to 8.5 metres, a ro-ro berth could be built and ferries could be offered its use for free.

If the Norrona contributed iro. £4m per annum to the Shetland economy, an investment providing free ro-ro berthing would soon bring more £ into Shetland than its build costs.

Given the SIC provide rent free berthing to Klyne Tugs Lowestoft, who operate the coastguard tugs, it would not be unreasonable to offer the same to a ferry company . All KTL bring to Scalloway is noise pollution and oil spills c/o the Anglian Sozzled!! They have a £76 million pound contract to provide this service and can well afford to pay dues.

I was thinking along the same lines....but for historical reasons instead....Scalloway the ancient capital of Shetland and was the home (after Lunna) of the Shetland bus, for that reason you see more Norweigans here in the summer than any other nationality.

  9. just been to cee & jays today asking the same question. was told they have a £25.00 handling charge but are happy to help.

Ewen Johnston doesn't charge any handling fee's. I ordered the gun the first of this week.

As it's made to order, it takes 5-6 weeks for delivery. I'm really looking forward to getting it, I ordered a 4-12x mountmaster illuminated reticule telescopic sight for it, that should be arriving tomorrow. :)

  10. Just tried to buy it direct from Theoben and apparently there are new laws in place to stop air guns being shipped from stockists to home addresses. In short you need to buy your air rifle through an agent/dealer. :(

  11. im my eyes not alot can beat weihrauch, but the gun you mentioned seems to be really good and its reviews online are amazing. its a very good choice

Yup, Weihrauch have arguably given more to the world of air guns than any other maker beginning with the HW 35 and HW 77. I think both are still in production today, decades after they were first introduced and the rekord trigger is the best mass produced trigger unit on the market in my opinion. :)
