  1. the chinese woman also withdrew later , thankgod. i do wonder tho if she was pushed rather as left of her own accord. there were far more talented people who deserved to get through and the xfactor would surely of known the public would of had a lot to say on the matter.

  2. I moved from London to Shetland for some peace and quiet - 14 months later, I'm still here, and often feel I'm still on holiday while work just gets in the way!

Lots of positives - my hardened city veneer is being chipped away and I really enjoy being part of a community... talking to my neighbours, seeing people out and about, being pushed out of snowdrifts when the wind is blowing a gale. The cheery ferrymen, being inspired by people who have so many talents (knitting, musicianship, cultural knowledge) and all the drivers of Whalsay who wave to every person they pass, whether they are on foot or in a car. I felt awkward at first, now I get miffed when the occasional person doesn't do it, haha. I live by the motto of 'there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.' However, month six of winter was quite a challenge. But I love the way Shetlanders embrace the good weather when it hits 14 degrees - time for skimpy tops, shorts and beachwear. I love the heritage, the museums, the exhibitions. I walk up to four times a week, go island hopping, take hundreds of photos to put on Facebook and have gained new interests, such as auctions, boat spotting and oystercatchers :P The main negative, for me, is wanting to pop back home for a stag weekend, family event or concert - and it costs a minimum of £250... and that's booked way in advance. However, I feel healthier, mentally relaxed and inspired by my surroundings.

I would say you took the words right out of my mouth, but i could never of worded it as well as that, very well said. :D

  3. If you want to blame someone, I would be looking for governmental (the last part of the word pretty much sums up the government ) idiot sat in a cosy little room with lots of cute fluffy bunnies skipping merrily while the birds sing and the sun shines, completely detached from the ways of the world, who decided to put people into boxes, and making any form of discipline impossible, parents, teachers even the police have their hands tied these days, and kids know it, they have become untouchable due to the p.c brigade and the lets put people into boxes prats. if you report these kids there will be a thousand reasons why these poor kids are the real victims and should be packed off on a holiday some where, leaving their victims to pick up the bill by tax increases. try harassing the government instead. what i really find disgusting is the fact that the schools catering department do not have the means to support the number of pupils, if that is true, then that for my mind is worth taking up with the government. schools are responsible for the welfare of kids left in their care, yet they cant do this effectively if they dont have the means

  4. Just a thought but, S.H, is not a native of Shetland, and he has not, to my knowledge produced a Bill of Sale for his island. So while he is distracting every one with his ongoing argument over Shetland's independence.... has he himself not invaded Shetland and stole from the very same place, he says he's defending? Forvik today, Unst, and Yell tomorrow??

  5. couldn't the vets have a register, where people from any area with transport who would be willing to transport people and pets to and from vets for the cost of the fuel? as an animal lover i for one would be more than happy to take someone to the vets . i couldnt bear the thought of some poor animal suffering as indeed the owner would be all because they couldnt travel to the vets!!

as for dogs jumping up and scaring children......... some of said children can be quite scarey too!!!!  (joke by the way before some ones mum starts having kittens!!!)

  6. An anti-crime. Terry Pratchett wrote of 'breaking and decorating'. :D

Not sure how I'd feel about it, to be honest. Would probably rather they didn't, but I'm not sure I'd report it unless it became a nuisance, or there was evidence of snooping, etc.

love terry pratchett's books, even the kids ones!!

i'm not sure how id feel either, tho i think my car might feel a lot better for actually being cleaned!!

  7. ^ There have been such threads in the past, but Shetlink has a policy of not permitting threads about local deaths. This is for a number of reasons including privacy and respect towards family members. In the case of Winehouse, however, the news is 'public' (so to speak) and the situation is somewhat different.

However, I'm not sure this thread is so different. And given some of the more vitriolic comments so far, perhaps a lock is in order?

    Tinks?

Sorry i didnt realise there was a policy on such threads, and given the way some of these threads go, it is perfectly understandable. Death in any family is tragic, regardless of career and status in society . No ones death should become a hot topic with a mix of opinions and gossip.

  8. completely and utterly agree with you Para Handy, Tho i also agree no matter how she died, to die so young and so talented is tragic by any means.

However what i cant understand is why when someone who is famous for what ever reason, dies, all of a sudden theres a thread full of sympathy and support, Yet here in Shetland when some hard working fisherman is lost at sea or someone dies in tragic circumstances, there never seems to be a thread offering sympathy, support or prayers to their families , friends and loved ones. Why is this so, do we take it for granted that they know they're in our thoughts, do we feel awkward because its so close to home, are we afraid of upsetting them by saying the wrong thing, Ok, while these people may not sell music,or act on tv or be famous in any way, to the families who lose anyone, their chosen career isnt an issue, the issue is the loss of a much loved person, and these people deserve our thoughts, prayers and sympathy just as much, and yet sadly they dont seem to get them.

  9. Would anyone get a good reference? lol

Had no luck with other browsers and tried other sites that use imagine verification and they were ok. So sent an email. Now I feel desperate!

Theres nothing desperate about it, theres a few positives about it really...

    A) its safer

    B) you can get out of it easier than you could if you were in the pub

    C) you dont have to get a round in!!

So good for you, and good luck.

  10. ^^ I don't think the average male is really very well equipped to be fully domesticated or to be fully house trained.

God save me from being "normal" though, I see many so called "normal" folk everyday, and I really think its vastly over-rated. I think I'll stick with being a bit freaky. Or as P!nk put it, "if you're wrong in all the right ways".

have to agree with you on that one. tho in reality what is normal, and is anyone ever totally normal ?

  11. ^^ I fear if I asked anybody for a reference the best I'd get back was, "Requires more domestication and house training". :P

bless, lol but i kinda think that sums up your average male, so at least theres a sign that your heading in the direction of being normal!!!

  12. ah right, i didnt read the paper yesterday, which explains why i didnt know.not that i shall be rushing to sign up. Think i shall just leave my destiny to fate, if its meant to be it will happen regardless, though maybe going out once in a while might help, or wearing a t-shirt that says "available" might lead to some interesting responses!!

  13. I wish people would understand that when they exceed the 20 mph speed limit, the chances of their car throwing up a stone chip and cracking some one elses windscreen increases, twice today a stone has hit my windscreen and both times it was by someone going faster than they should of been!! Please think on, the limits there for a reason, please think of others!!
