  1. I must tell you that the proposed parish league doesnt have the backing of the parish cup association at the moment. It looks like the whalsay may be able to enter a team as they are looking to have a third side anyway. Northmavine would cover the delting area with the wrultizers works league team. We dont want to be in competition with the A league and dont want teams that strong in the parish league so delting would seem to be a non-starter. Perhaps what we are proposing is a league that would be in competition with the B league. What the parish league would offer is football at a better standard than B league. It would be much more competetive anyway. Maybe delting could enter in the future but that would depend on some of the players from that area playing for northmavine. The way we see it at the moment that is delting B have alot of players who are too good for that standard of football. Two teams from that area in the parish league could balance that out though.

Sounds great, why don't you just take over the running of senior football in Shetland as it appears that the vast majority think the Shetland FA is incapable of doing it?

    Hope you can help us.

Our daughter got her bike pinched from our front garden lastnight.

Have contacted the police, but was hoping you could help by keeping your eyes peeled for it. We are in Lerwick.

It is identical to the photo.

    Cheers

Jeezo, I have one exactly the same in my shed!

Hope you find yours. I had one stolen from the playing park in Lerwick (yes the bairn was with it). It was dredged out of Hay's Dock some months later.

  3. Why though??? whats the point, in general most players go through games withou receiving injuries. It should be up to the clubs and the individual player not to the shetland junior county manager.

    .

The answer is simple, long thought out, mulled over and discussed at junior level.

Junior players only ever get, usually, two opportunities to play a junior county, some may get three and others only the one. Injuries are part of football and life in general. However, to minimise the risk to these players of missing that chance it has been the norm to "ban" them from playing senior football two weeksish prior to the game. In addition junior football stops a week before.

The "ban" has sometimes been strictly enforced and sometimes a loose agreement which is left to players themselves.

It is just there to minimise the risk and prevent injury to boys who would miss out on a once in a lifetime event.

  4. Remember unst were made to play without erik thomson and neil laurenson (who wer on a 2 week ban for the junior intercounty) last year and got thumped by scalloway. 10-0.

Nothing to do with the senior association that "ban", one imposed, I suspect, by the junior manager.

  5. Eistnwast der will obviously be some teams ie delting, whalsay etc which will be missing alot of players due to intercoonty (junior and senior) fair enough these teams shouldn't be forced into playing. Other teams which are only missing 1 or 2 players should though be told to play games, as this is what the reserves are for.

I understand however that A teams shouldn't be forced into fielding 11 "B" players, but 1or 2 shouldn't be an issue. Unless for teams who are basically to scared too play without, and to lose without their best players.

However could the likes of whalsay B and delting B not have given unst yell and burra very good opposition this year? I feel they could have

Another thing why is there 2 weeks off for the interconty and why do the junior coonty players have to fulfil a 2 week playing ban. Scotland only this week have lost Paul Hartley and Gary Caldwell (2 key men in Alex McLeish's regime) through injury on sunday when celtic played gretna- this mcleish basically waved away as tough luck. So why can't shetland do the same. There is enough talent in the shetland leagues to cover injuries which would be 1 or 2 at most.

I don't understand. Celtic, Rangers or Derby County will not be made to play competative football this weekend without international players why should Delting, Thistle or Whitedale be forced to play without county players?

Senior football has to stop for Shetland games. It should only be the day(three daysish) for the game against Orkney. The Island Games will have to be around the 10 days the travel and competition takes.

  6.

Dunno about that. Madrid in Aberdeen in December...they freeze their balls off, we score lots of goals.

But it's Moscow and Copenhagen at home any Athletico and the Greek chaps away from home. It is not home and away.

  7. You have to ask yourself the question, "Where does it stop?"

What is to stop them deciding that drinking alcohol shouldn't be allowed just in case you breath on somebody that doesn't like the smell of your chosen aperitif?

    Quantum leap there Pooks.

Inhailing other peoples alcohol smelling breath is unlikley to highten your risk of delevoping Cancer. Inhailing others smoke does.

  8. Moscow and Copenhagen at home must be our only chance off some points from this group. But it's great to be involved.

Are the fixtures drawn up yet? This is not a home and away format just four games.

  9. Thanks for the history lesson Wheesht !

It's interesting to see that many of the people holding official positions were never eligable to play in the Parish Cup. Perhaps this goes back to it's origins when it was intended to encourage the growth of football outwith Lerwick.

    Thanks for the sarcasm Boris!!!!!!!!

EISTnWAST asked the questions I was merely answering them.

And perhaps therein lies the problem. I am a Parish Cup fan, I have no hard and fast notions of non change versus change. Howver, it appears others do and as long as those entrenched views exist football in these isles will never move forward.

To answer your point Boris, football outwith Lerwick, at senior level anyway, is probably healthier than inside the town boundaries so that arrguement simply holds no ground. The teams that win, and will win the Parish cup for very many years to come are the "community" clubs, those who strive to have a set-up that includes youth football at as many age groups as they can get. They are Delting, Whalsay and looking forward a little Whitedale.

So as far as I can see, at present, exclusion for any new entrants is not based on any ability to play the game.

  10. Thanks penfold.

So just a few questions now...

What is the name of the trophy? It sounds like originally it wasn't a 'parish' cup?

At which point did it become the Parish Cup?

When was the PCA formed? Who was originally responsible for the running of the competition?

I previously stated, perhaps wrongly, that the PCA can pretty much do as they please with the running of the competition. But those are the important questions that need to be answered, so we can all know if there is a real case for the competition to be opened up.

    Started in 1952.

Started by the Shetland FA (SFA).

SFA president Leslie Eunson (Lerwick man) is the man accredited with starting the competition, assisted by secretary Bertie Robertson (Lerwick). A sub committe ran that competition.

    First won by Sandwick.

Mostly Southern League sides (Whitness and Weisdale entered a few and played at Tingwall), who dominated the first 9 years. Including two wins by Queen of the South (Virkie) and five by Quendale.

It appears that the SFA still had "control" of the competition up to around the early 80's when Donald Silk and Ian Gray (Lerwick and Scalloway) were still helping to organise it.

The present Parish committee should have minutes that will help to pin point when they became independant of the SFA.

Not clear where the trophy came from. Minutes and notices say "recieved a new trophy" but in 50's language that could mean they simply bought a trophy and recieved it.

Ask a Delting man but I think the inscription says "Inter Parish Trophy"

Unlike the SFA and Works League, the present "association" is not affiliated to the Scottish governing body and could run into problems with many things in these days of litigation and blame because of that.

Whalsay entered in 1961 and won it (strange win as they didn't play any games until the final, playing the southern section winners Sandwick in the final).

As far as actual Parishes are concrened it is clear that these were very rough, broad and changed frequently, and some would say still are (East Voe and Northmavine). In the early days the teams from the southend were more localised than church parishes are. And as far as Whiteness and Weisdale are concerned the rules changed to suit individual players - even included the whole West side so Jim Peterson (Sandness) could play.

The rules were adapted when servicemen came to certain areas like Unst and the South end and once more when Sullom came on the scene.

  11. I was led to believe, from a young age, that the Parish Cup was created as a cup competition for parishes outside of Lerwick. It was also agreed that Southern League teams would also be allowed to enter. Can someone (older) confirm this/make it clear for all?

    You were wrongly led.

The Parish Cup is a competition that was started by the Shetland Football Association to encourage the game outside Lerwick.

The first teams to play for the trophy were from the southend before other became involved.
