  1. have yet to figure out which is the test socket, have a feeling it's not in this building, and therefore unable to plug anything in to it as it's covered. all phone lines in the building are crackling, a phonecall is enough to need to reset the router, forgot to pick up filters today to see if that made a difference. but so frustrating. not my phoneline, the name on the contract isn't concerned, so I'll just have to wait till she's fuming and BT can have her screaming down the line at them.

  2. Anyone else on the Walls exchange having problems? had to restart the router 3 times today. short drop outs (enough to stop radio streams) and longer ones (red flashing lights on router and zero connection) also crackle on telephone line... Don't want to have to argue with BT this morning I don't have the time or energy...

  3. I would agree Bombus muscorum agricolae, Shetland bumble bee an inch sounds huge though, possibly a queen, body length is around 18mm. The red top and white stripey bum is what you normally look for for a Shetland bumble bee. Remind me not to try to type insects on a phone with autocorrect.

  5. Going back to the financial info, from what I can see, the projected savings from closing Aith is due to the fact that none of the teachers will be employed at the AHS. There is a cost against Burravoe of about 45,000 pounds because they will have to employ a 3rd teacher at Mid Yell but there is nothing for Aith, so where exactly are all these specialist secondary teachers going to go in light of the fact that they intent to shut down all (but one) of the JHS secondary dept's?

I have heard that the AHS is already over-staffed due to many of the teacher's from Scalloway moving there.

Well the AHS is already stealing a teacher from Aith, that's the whole timetable been rejigged so they can have the craft and design (what ever they call it now) teacher. Is that the way forward replacing all vacant teachers posts in AHS with teachers from schools they plan to close?

I have a plus point for our household - now that the bairn is planning on staying on in Shetland for 5th year for her closing Aith will be an advantage, she may only have to catch 1 bus to and from school if they have all the extra pupils coming from this way.

  6. Desperately looking for additional transport and hosteling costs if Aith is closed. any ideas where it is? was interested to see if they are taking in to account the under provision of current school transport. Should they close the school here they really can't expect 11year olds to be driving themselves to school. Also intrigued to find out how many will be back to having to catch 3 different buses to and from school, praying that if the bus they're on is running late the next one will wait for them.

  7. We've had a bus to Lerwick for 30+ years on a Sunday, same as those travelling down from the north and those from the isles. Not just used by "children" but those who live in supported accommodation during the week. It's only available during the school term and only as a "dial-a-ride" but because it's not on the timetables it is often assumed that there are NO BUSES on a Sunday. There are but of course they are only an option for those in the know.

Moving to Sumburgh so I can catch flights easily, is just as silly as suggesting I move to town so I don't need to catch a bus. If it were possible for me to be living anywhere else I sure a hell wouldn't be living somewhere where we have to be grateful for having a wednesday bus service, I'd be back in the civilised world where not only would I have buses after 5pm, but on a Sunday and public holidays (including christmas day) and to hell with the extra council tax it's worth it.

Why on earth is everyone complaining about cuts and turning on other service users? Here in Shetland we pay one of the lowest rates of council tax. It's easy to make the cuts less deep, raise council tax, roughly to put it in line with the rest of Scotland.

  8. Just realised Paul, you maybe didn't get these links

    1st for tomorrows meeting.

Arrangements for public attendance at Education & Families Committee meeting

Due to a wedding taking place in the Town Hall tomorrow, public access to the Council Chambers for the Education & Families Committee meeting at 10 a.m. will be limited due to fire regulations. However, space has been made available at the Registrar’s office at the County Buildings, which will be served by a video link from the Town Hall. Any members of the public wishing to attend the meeting should call at the Town Hall in the first instance.

Secondary education, on the other hand, needs larger schools with more sophisticated equipment. Brae and the Anderson High should be the main centres for secondary education with the phased closure of most junior secondaries.

3rd you may have already read from Shetland Times

    http://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2012/08/28/backlash-in-aith-against-school-closure-proposal

Head of schools Helen Budge confirmed today that the £690,000 figure does not factor in the added cost of transporting pupils to Lerwick. She said more detailed sums would only be calculated if councillors approve the plans

If you remember during the last blueprint consultation it was stated that transport and hostelling costs were not taken into consideration as they were from a different budget.

Can I also bring to peoples attention that there currently is not enough school bus provision for existing pupils, as it's expected that pupils will drop out, get lifts with people working in town and older pupils drive themselves and friends. I would be tempted to try and arrange a protest and ask ALL AHS pupils entitled to school transport on the 14th of September to attempt to use it.

  9. also the council tax is just that, a tax set by the council, they choose the rates (unless regional/national government is trying to buy votes) and it is used to pay for local/regional services over and above those paid for by income tax & business rates etc. through national/regional government.

  10. Council tax usually covers local fire/police, Council Tax here isn't so bad, plus we still have quite high public services (at the moment). A large portion in Scotland is water rates.

Council Tax isn't based on owning your home, if you rent you still have to pay, if it's too much you can appeal. There's discounts for various reasons, plus there is help if you can't afford it.

When renting you just take council tax in to account when looking at a property, just like any other bill, so I assume you do when buying a home too, but then at least in my life time there's always been rates/community charge/council tax so never known anything different.

  11. It's great to see all the new music students getting excited about starting on Tuesday, ditto the school bairns for starting sound recording in 2weeks. Obviously those who don't want to use the building for educational or leisure purposes don't have to use it, but will they stop pleeping on about it. It's built, it's open, and it's being used.

We've got our tickets to go see Neil on Thursday. Finally somewhere that'll keep a grand piano without all that fuss.

Looking at the new bus timetables looks like accessing the Mareel is going to be so much easier, during the day and in the evening.

Oh and good luck to all who enroll on Monday, it seems a good bunch of you, lets hope the brand new facilities are everything they've been hyped to be. And to the sound recording lot - bet you're glad you wont be in that shed this winter.
