  1.

Delgadoes in the North Star were great as well.

Twas a cracker. Pulling the tables into the middle of the dancefloor almost made like a caberet style show.

I even got a copy of their Fruitmarket bootleg signed by the band.

I seem to remember enjoying The Amphetameanies when they played at Brae Hall for the first time (with Alex Johnston/Ferguson/normal surname before he became Alex Kapranos).

  2. I think his claims are pretty much a work of fantasy. His claim that Richard Reid (the shoe bomber) and himself were supposed to fly a plane into the White House is strange in itself considering the flight that crashed (well, was shot down, but thats for another thread) in Pennsylvania was heading for the White House (allegedly).

And considering that the 4 hijacked planes were taken by groups of 4 or 5, there surely would have been more than just Moussaoui and Reid taking part in this planned hijacking.

  3. Best episode of the season so far.

I thought we were going to find out how Locke lost the use of his legs, thats the only bad thing I will say about the episode.

I had it pointed out to me how Henry was so similar to Kevin Spacey's character in The Usual Suspects. Just watching him in this episode made me notice that.

The map that Locke saw in the UV light was quite impressive. But I don't know if he'll be able to replicate it.

Just a couple of things I noticed in the episode...

When Locke was meeting his father at the airport, the plane that flew over had a Dharma logo on the tail.

The house that Locke was looking over just before he realised his father was still alive, was that Sayid's ladyfriend he was speaking to?

  4. Does it have anything in common with the American University (Boston perhaps?) that had to do some serious foundation work to it's brand new library after the developers failed to take into account the weight of the books buring the design and construction?

  5.

Would this be part of a tour promoting Roddy's new solo album by any chance?

Probably not part of a tour but the will be playing on Mark Radcliffe's show and possibly a small gig somewhere in Lerwick.

Mark Radcliffe wanted to do the show from Shetland but he needed guests of a certain calibre before the BBC would let him. Roddy was thinking about coming up for the music seminars but he couldn't confirm anything. It got to the stage where somebody had to confirm to get the other one to confirm. To end up with, the BBC phoned Roddy and worked it all out.....so if one hadn't have come we would have ended up with nowt.

Cheers Marvin. I may have to make a trip home if he does play a gig.

  6. Given the recent press that this has received, what are your views on our National Anthem?

Football and Rugby use Flower of Scotland whereas the Commonwealth Games team were using Scotland the Brave.

Should we have a recognised National Anthem?

I know from personal experience that Flower of Scotland can end up sounding like a funeral procession at football games. The crowd end up singing it faster than the band then half the crowd try to sing along at the band speed and it just ends up in a right mess.

On the other side of the coin, very few people know the words to Scotland the Brave (aside from the playground "Here's comes the highland granny").

Other choices that have been bounced about in the past few years are -

    Highland Cathedral

    Loch Lomond

    Auld Lang Syne

    Caledonia

I think there is one that was written a few years ago that The Scotsman championed, however that may have been Highland Cathedral. I've never heard it so I can't comment.

Runrig's version of Loch Lomond always gets a good response at Hampden. Lovely song as well.

Auld Lang Syne is too associated with New Year in my opinion. Not just in Scotland but worldwide. Plus you would get lots of people doing the handshaking bit at the wrong time.

Frankie Miller's/Dougie MacLean's (Shetland Folk Festival this year) Caledonia is an incredible song. Written from the viewpoint of Frankie Miller yearning from his homeland after years of living away (France I think).

    Anyone else got any thoughts?

  7. The Sumburgh Hotel extension. What did it take...2 weeks? a month? (i was told once, can't remember) to erect. Tis a shame really as the actual building itself is nice if you ignore the extension.

As pointed out, across the road from Frank Williamsons could do with being knocked down and rebuilt. The Fish Factory that used to be across from Grantfield looked horrible, good to see that is out of the way.
