  1. Yep the pricing is clear on the menu (I didn't say it wasn't). That doesn't mean it's right in my opinion for that sort of meal/food.

Anyway it was more than that we had issue with as said.

    Talk amongst yourselves...

Out of interest how much did you pay for your main course?

I've been to Spiggie on numerous occasions and always left feeling totally satisfied but it only takes one bad meal for anyone to ruin a meal out. No one gets it right everytime but the general impression I get is the Spiggie Hotel is highly recommended.

    Cheers

  2. Just wondering cos I witnessed a digger on top of the hill to the left of the Kames, 2 quad bikes with trailors, lengths of steel tubing(painted white) with flanges for bolting together and various people including the brother of one of the VE directors(not sure if he's a director himself) yesterday afternoon!

  3. Were you to blame for the bad weather? No? Then why apologise for something that is well and truly out of your control?

The point I was trying to make was that we often assume that visitors enjoyment of Shetland depends on good weather when that is not always the case.

As for "Most people come to get away from it all" What rot! You only deal with a very small percentage of visitors to the Shetland (Unless your accomodations are vast).

If you read the second paragraph of my post again you will see that I acknowledged that I am only one operator. I cannot pretend that our visitors are in any way representative of the majority but I think we are best placed to know what they tell us! I merely sought to add a bit of balance to the debate as someone involved in the industry and to refute the concensus in the majority of the previous posts about how poorly Shetland delivers for visitors when ours, on the whole, don't say so.

I agree entirely with you that there is plenty of room for improvement and sympathise with the embarassing position you found yourself in at the weekend. But if tourism is going to develop into a self sustaining industry then ideas and both the finance and the enthusiasm to implement them (with a degree of support or provision from the public sector in certain areas) have to come from people like you and me. If you are so convinced that there is an unmet need (and presumably an untapped business opportunity) in the way of a cafe open in Lerwick on Sundays or bus tours or more tourist accommodation, why not consider setting them up as business ventures of your own?

Beacause like quite a few other topics on Shetlink lately it seems to be easier to vent negative feelings and finding problems to moan about rather simply just taking a 'chance' and moving into a business venture yourself and seeing the problems faced from a proprietors side.

What does the LPA have to do with this anyway? All the hotels have a list of cruiseship and sailships etc. arrivals so the information is there if you want it. I don't know about local shops but it can't be too difficult to get that info.

Which hotels/cafes are NOT open on Sunday? I bet thats a more difficult question to answer than which ones are open!!

Which shops do you feel SHOULD be open on a Sunday for tourists, list them and then we can discuss it.

The problem hers is, it wouldn't matter which shops, cafes did or did not open, the next gripe would be people would be moaning if they weren't open all day!

  4. Still not trying to have a go Hellsbells but if you've damaged the screen intentionally or not how can you expect to get your money back? Although the weakest point of a mobile phone is the screen IMO it still takes quite a bit of force to break it.

If say the retailer did give you a refund does he not then have a problem trying to get his money back from the supplier? I would imagine the supplier or manufacturer would have the same response to the retailier as the retailer had to your good self!

I think its unfortunate that you may have unintentionally broke your phone but sometimes you just have to suck it up.

How much did you pay for your phone in anycase? Hopefully not hundreds.

On another note, who served you? I would imagine its not Cecil or Ben, maybe one of the younger lasses but even they would probably have to get one of the above to deal with this problem.

    Cheers

  5. ^

Totally agree. Many shops around here take advantage of being a monopoly. Hopefully this will finally force the prices of electrical goods down if Tesco start selling bigger TV's etc.

I don't think I've ever bought a computer game in Shetland whilst I've lived here. The £15-20 mark up is literally insane.[/quote

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5-10 years ago maybe but I can't understand how people still think local shops have a monopoly in selling consumable or non-consumable goods when the majority of people have access to the internetand have done for so long.

I truly believe that King of Funs statement and those like it are without foundation nowadays, certainly when your talking 'price'. If I'm wrong then give some examples, back up your posts! :D

    Cheers

  6. Can you give a better explanasion of what you thought they would be able to do for you. I

f the phone had stopped working for no apparent reason, fair enough, I'm sure they would have sorted that out for you no bother as they are an extremely helpful bunch IMO. I can't see why you thought they would be able to do something about a broken screen, I would be surprised if anyone on the isle could sort that for you.

Not having a go at you just trying to understand where you're coming from.

  7. Council uses the old gym hall in King Harold St to house all Occupational Therapies equipment such as chairs, bath seats, stair rails etc. St Clements Hall is still sitting rotting away. The council may aswell sell it to someone who could make use of it!

  8. Good points there ShetlandPeat!

If you want/think you can get good deals then you can shop online until your heart is conten nothing wrong with that! If say you are looking for clothes there are any number of places online you can find cheap clothes, if you go into for eg. Klaize or Aspects look for one of the branded products and then go home and look online my guess is that same product will cost the same possibly a couple of pound dearer but once you apply postage your no better off....try it and see. The same goes with electricals, especially larger appliances like TV's, Hi-fi's and Washing Machines etc sure on the net someone on face value is selling a specified model cheaper but once you add tax and carriage charges are you really any better off?

People rabbitt on about choice but there must be only so much products a shop in Lerwick can stock up on until they have no more room available or they go out the ass because they can't sell the products fast enough. Shetland is a small island so sales here must be slower than say River Island, Currys etc. so it must be diiificult to compete.

Have a look at the post here today on Specsavers, prime example big company comes to Shetland promising better service and cheaper products.....maybe for the first 2 or 3 years but now they think they have their feet under the table the service is shoddy and the products are no cheaper than in town, I know cos I tried it and won't be back!!

Point is, if people are unhappy about choice the internet is the biggest shop you will ever find and 'hay' you don't have to leave the house!!!

Why is it that no younger people are going into the retail trade in Shetland to give people more choice? Maybe it's not as easy as some people think!

Do the SIC give retailers or would-be retailers enough help to give the Shetland more choice? I don't know, but instead of getting the big chains into Shetland why not help the people that are willing to open retail premises or already run a retail business a bit of help and create competition within the islands itself and that keeps everyone happy!

Somehow I think if all that did happen people would still complain. :D

  9. I have to agree with the above two posts. I think now they have there feet under the table they are beginning to milk things.

I first tried them around 6 or 7 years ago and their service was great and the prices for frames and lenses were significantly cheaper than Millers and Kelly's.

I paid nearly £370 for a set of glasses in the summer and another set free, now I know some of you will say I received 2 sets for that price but in reality the 2nd set of frames are a lot cheaper(or should be) plus thats nearly £120 dearer than the last 2 frames I received a couple of years ago.

Anyway I wasn't happy with my goggles after a few months so I decided to get another set of frames but thought I would try Kellys so I went in there with the prescription found a set of frames and got my lenses made up and shaved down in a few days for £200.

Just in case, if you go to any of the opticians in town you can take your Specsavers subscription with you but it won't be any use to you as they don't fill in all the boxes of info that are required for you to go to another optician, you have to phone them direct to post out your full subscription which takes days!!!! Cheeky *****.

  10. Rejecting the planning for that scheme was ridiculous , im fed up with Iris Hawkins , i think the people of Scalloway should do thier best to ensure she doesnt get re-elected , as for the rest of the councillors there not much better , its high time we were rid of this calamitous muppet show that they are running !

This has absolutely nothing to do with the financial state that JHB find themselves in now!

Another point on the job losses. That a valid point but by not paying a host of sub-contractors they are putting the livelyhoods of as many people at risk again by continually not paying bills and taking money for themselves!

    Cheers

  11. What a surprise! JHB are owing tens of thousands of pounds to a host of local sub-contractors and suppliers and have been for a long time. Now it appears they are not paying the taxman! This is all money from housing and other projects that are complete, NOTHING to do with the planned housing scheme proposed to be built in Scalloway.

Can anyone tell me where the profit has gone from all the houses which they have built over the last few years? They certainly don't build houses to make a loss.

I don't/can't believe they have spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on planning for a scheme that would rely on the planning board for permission.

To blame the council for the company's downfall is a total kop out. I believe the directors of JHB knew they were in the midden and blaming the council is the easy way out for them!

  12. I haven't posted here before, at least I don't think I have and if I did it must have been a long way back!

Anyway as it looks like Big D is being pushed out the door I would like to say that I think the way has been treated from day 1 by some local councillors and some people on this forum is a disgrace! The man has never been given a chance to sit down a do his job properly and to any kind of ability without interferance. The vast majority of things written here, the local rag and The Sun has been pure speculation and written just to add fuel to the fire.

He has never had time to settle in and we'll never know what positives he could have brung to the council and our councillors!

I hope he leaves and gets a big fat golden handshake because thats what he deserves for all the sharn he's had to put up with in the last year.

Sorry, I know a lot of you won't agree with this post but thats the way I feel about it and 'no' I don't know the man or any of his family either.

Rant over, have a nice day and a great weekend!

    Cheers

  13. From what I was told today JHB's problems are more than just this project.

I actually popped along to view the designs at the public meeting(but couldn't stay for the meeting) and felt that they were pretty dire. I know that's not why the planning application was defered but if we're going to build something at least let it be something decent and thoughtful.

JHB's problems are common knowledge at the moment which are not directly related to this project so you have to ask yourself why put all your eggs in one basket when you know the past record of planners and applications which are not so clear cut?

Do you not think that this can be put down to bad planning by JHB in the first place and now they are using the planning committee as an excuse for their company's current problems?

  14. Does anyone know how fast the cinema will be able to show new release films. I'll be very dissapointed if we'll still be waiting weeks to see these films!

    Cheers

To be honest, it wouldn't have bothered me if we had to wait. It'd still be faster than waiting for the dvd to come out and far cheaper/easier than going south to watch a film.

Well I just think to spend that kind of money on a Cinema/music venue to wait 7 or 8 weeks for a latest release would be a huge dissapointment, I'm sure others would agree. I'm glad we'll be able to view them as they are released cos thats what the whole 'cinema' experience for me is about.

    Cheers

  15. Excuse me for being naive then but whats the point in charging interest on the loan in the first place if it's not going to be paid back? I'm not trying to fan the flame here but still finding it difficult to understand.

What will happen if Mr Miller sells the building, does that money go straight into his pocket or do the interest payments have to be paid back at anytime?

    Cheers

  16. Well, I have been to Clive's today and had a look around. Couldn't find 'Uncharted' so I guess it's been sold! I purchased a film just newly released, it is the same price as Play.com. I also bought a boxset which was also the same price as Play, so well done them... :D and me for finding a good deal in a local shop... :D! Who would have thought it!!!

Anyway I did have a good look around and noticed that some boxsets were quite a bit dearer than Play but most were around the same price, those being The Sopranos, Friends, Deadliest Catch etc. there were more but I can't name them all. I didn't have an in-depth look at the music or games but noticed some prices were more or less the same as the internet.

    Cheers

  17. Although I have said it before anybody here that is interested in photography and want lenses, filters etc find what you want and go down to the Camera Shop, they are extremely competitive with the internet. I've bought 2 cameras a zoom lens and various filters etc. and they are as cheap or cheaper than the net. Also the staff are extremely helpful too!

I am in no way connected to The Camera Shop in anyway but it is probably one of my favourite shops in the town and I think they deserve a bit of praise!

    Happy New Year!

    Cheers
