  1. Go and check the Bag and Travel Shop! You never know you may get something that suits you in the price range you want but you'll never know until you check yourself. :D

Can't really think of anywhere else that may sell that type of thing maybe The Bargain Centre but B&TS probably your best bet.

    Cheers

  2. @TeeAyBee. I'm expecting some negative comments to come my way but I think most of my points are quite fair! It doesn't matter whether you shop local, in Aberdeen or on the internet you will always find differences in pricing from one shop to another, you just have to wise up a bit and get out there rather than sitting on your backside in front of a computer. I've been caught out with internet companies who display great prices but as soon as you get to the checkout.......VAT to be added and oh yes...postage! So that original 'Great', 'cheap' price is not so 'Great' or 'cheap' anymore!

Already theirs another 'they'll probably be to expensive' post in another thread tonight! How do you know? Go and have a look, you never know, you may be surprised!

About the question of the game at Clives, I'm going for a look tomorrow to check that, surely he must know noone will buy that game at that price when the sequel has just come out at probably the same price. Put it down to £20, better that than getting nothing cos that's what will happen!!

    Cheers

  3. I like to think I'm quite 'savvy' when it comes to getting or finding good deals when buying most of the products mentioned in this post. When buying consumables like food stuffs and drinks I don't really pay much attention, maybe thats the Alpha male in me coming out!

Anyway, what gets my goat is people who like to post and have a good moan at the standard of retailers and their staff on this website and paint everyone with the same brush. If you think you've been dealt with in an unacceptable manner then inform the management and explain your reasons then they can look at themselves or their employees, see where they are going wrong and move forward!! Rant over - back on topic.. :D

Concerning Dvd's, Games and Music, I agree, Clive's can bee expensive but generally if I want something in particular I'll go in check the price, if it is vastly overpriced I go to Play.com. If on the otherhand they are 3 or 4 quid dearer then more often or not I'll take the plunge.

When purchasing Camera equipment, binoculars and accessories I'll find out what I want, check the internet for price then head down to The Camera Centre OR Bayes which I have found on 4 or 5 different occasions last year have been cheaper or round about the same price as the internet.

If I'm looking to buy any white goods or brown goods I do the same, buy a Which magazine, find out what suits me, check the internet for price then head to Robertsons. If I can get a price around the same as the internet then I buy from them which I know I will receive good aftersales at the same time!

When I need to purchase furniture a bed or matress etc. I'll go to The Bargain Centre or LBC. I don't bother checking the internet because I like to lay on a bed to try it or I want to feel the quality of the furniture etc I'm buying. I've had some good deals from both places over the past couple of years.

Lastly, Sorry! Clothing, when I need clothes I do purchase from the internet but I do like to try jeans, t-shirts, shoes etc on first so I'll visit most of the clothes shops in the town where if you can be bothered you will find decent deals, maybe not all the time but generally most of the time! I hate having to send away for 2 sizes of everything and then have to cover the cost of postage to send back!

In general and in my experience retailers in Shetland aren't as bad as some people would like to post about and make out on here. If you can be bothered, arm yourself with prices etc, go to the local shops and be prepared to ask for discounts etc if you feel you can get something cheaper on the internet or you are being 'ripped' off!

Anyway, sorry that took so long! Have a good night and good luck researching prices for that new TV, Football boots, 4-poster bed, scart lead or the latest Ally Bain CD!!! :D

    Cheers

  4. Fair enough, I wasn't aware that they had recommended the lead to you. Was the lead from a branded company? Or was it the shops own packaging? If they repackage it and attempt to sell it as new then are they not breaking the law and possibly voiding any manufacturer warranty that comes with the lead?

I wouldn't want to be buying a previously opened package with the possibility of bent pins or broken wires without prior knowledge.

It was from a branded company and had a bar code! It came in a sealed plastic bag with no obvious way of getting into it but ripping.

I would presume they would check for bent pins or broken wires before selling it on, if that is what they decide to do with the item. It was a 2 to 1

    scart plug.[/quote

I can't understand how the sales person managed to get that wrong!! Are you sure you explained what you needed correctly as a 2 to 1 scart lead in this day and age is an extremly basic accessory?

  5. we were also told that if we opened one of the packaged leads, we could not return it if it did not do the job required.

We did open it, it didn't do the job required so we did return it

This was against the buyers statutory consumer rights to receive goods that are suitable for the purpose for which they are intended (IE can do the job).

The only items you cannot (in the main) return are consumables (Scent, Toiletries, personal hygiene items and goods that cannot be re-sold once opened).

As the shop advised that the lead Frances got was suitable for the job it was required for but proved otherwise the shop could have fallen foul of the "Goods description act".

Errm, perhaps I have read this wrong but do you mean that you think it is acceptable to purchase a product, open the packaging and then return it when there is nothing wrong with it?

Yup Pooks, You read it wrong

They had all the information required. They knew the job that the lead was supposed to do and basically we had been mis-sold the piece of kit.

Fair play to them, though, that they gave us our money back but it will not be difficult to locate another plastic bag and staple it together to re-sell this lead to someone else.

Fair play nothing! To refuse a refund would have been against the law as laid down in the "Customer statutory consumer rights of goods act" (I think that is its title) which could have landed the shop on deep doodoo.

Okay, how does it work if you buy something from an internet company, open the packaging, which, in my experience when buying AV accessories is you need scissors or a knife to open and then find it can't do the job! I would assume you can't just re-package it and send it back and hope to get a refund. Would I be totally wrong there?

    Cheers

  6. I'm looking to get a bit of tiling done (bathroom walls) in lerwick.

I had some done in my kitchen last year by a polish guy, and he did a great job, but I can't find his phone number.

    Can anyone help?

I know him (Arak) and will pm you his mobile number tomorrow. His workmanship is second to none!

    Cheers

  7. Don't want to dampen your holiday plans at all but I did see a tv documentary, I think on BBC1 a few months ago saying that any UK or USA tourists holidaying in Morocco to be careful as Muslim extremists were rife in North Africa and that kidnappings were becoming more frequent!

I'll check through the internet for some info, sorry that's all a bit vague but I do remember them saying that!

    Cheers

  8. but its not taxpayers tax generated public money. Its between one of the trusts n the Millers? and should we not be glad that its Shetland money still in Shetland as some consolation. Not like a big company from the mainland using trust fund money to subsidise the building of infrastructure to make them money n pay back no profit share, i.e. wind farm

Thats okay then isn't it

So what about the salmon farmers who borrow money from the council, trusts etc and then before they go out the backside shift all their assets to another one of THEIR companies leaving a string of debt behind them?

Sorry if that was a bit of a rant but this kind of thing pisses me off!

    Cheers :D

  9. I watched the report on the news last night about this and they were saying a bottle of vodka would go up by around 93p if this law were to come in!

Wow 93p, what good do they think that will do?

If they think price is going to deter drinkers, wether it be alcholics underagers or just your normal Joe Bloggs would they not be better putting the pice off spirits up £20 or £30 a bottle!!!!

Just my thought on this one.

    Cheers

  10. Hi guyz, just needing a bit of advice for a friend.

They are paying £33.50 per month with BT for internet access so trying to find a better deal.

They will have to stick with the BT line rental at £11.50 and then whatever their broadband will cost!

I'm with Sky but haggled a good deal but they are going to charge a £30 connection fee and then £18.50 a month after that.

    Any suggestions welcome.

    Cheers

  11. I got Sky HD 3 weeks ago. I only had to wait 4 weeks for mine! Just get on the phone, rant and make a general nuisance of yourself and tell them that you will cancel your subscription and go freesat instead! I did that and ended up getting Sky broadband for £10 a month and they waved the £30 connection fee.

Thats not the way I normally do things but the likes of Sky and Vodafone take the piss with all their charges etc so why not try and get what you can out of them. Thats only my opinion by the way!

ps I also got a month free subscription aswell.

    Cheers

  12. Canna figure dis speedtest.net oot am computer illiterate! I doo a test and then they want £19 to cleean up me computer, is this needed?

I tried a test and got these results:

    HELP!!

  13. Got my Sky broadband last week and everything seems to be working okay!

My laptop is fairly new but I have noticed that when I try to play You Tube clips or some Channel 4 catch-up programmes the videos always stall and then play for a few seconds then stall again! I've checked my internet speed which is 54.0 Mbps with an excellent signal quality.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm not sure what the problem may be!

    Cheers

  14. You could try NCG Builders(Westside), they have a good reputation for good quality homes, Kevin Sutherland(Brae) also, and Dennis Thomson as well, he would be a bit more expensive but his houses as far as I have seen a very good quality!

You may have to cover travelling costs, accommodation and possibly a few Eastwing hammers as they won't get them through security!!

Thats if they would be coming to the Big Apple! :D

  15. Any one use them or have any good advice! They've offered me a no connection fee plus £10 a month for broadband! I had to have my contract with plusnet terminated before it started because although they had said I wasn't far from an exchange and that the line speed was excellent when I got everything set up I couldn't get connected!

I called plusnet and they told me that there had been a problem with the line as BT had told them that the line quality was not good enough!

    Thanks

    Andrew
