  1. It's okay Spinner I got off the Cyberchair this morning, here's what I found:

G,R's - 19" LG HD Ready LCD with the specs Spinner asked for - £189.99

I didn't take down a model number as I hate standing with a pen a paper in a shop but I think it was something like 19L2000.

I counted 25 TV's on show with a couple of spaces where they had obviously sold out. Plenty of sizes to choose from and mostly Samsung, LG and Finlux?? I think. The boy said they can get Panasonic if you have a model in mind.

Hydro - 19" Sanyo same spec as regardas output but just seemed to be HD Ready.

They had around 20 Tv's of similar brands to G.R's with Panasonic to.

So, Zebbidy the day you looked in the local shops they must have sold out of everything and their show models, they must be doing something right!

  2. Zebbidy quote:

'GOD NO dont buy a tv up here as you will pay through the teeth for it plus the selection is very limited.'

    That's your advice Zebbidy

    Piddly quote:

'I checked all the usual haunts on the internet but none could beat the price i paid at Goerge Robertsons, they've just opened up a floor upstairs with all the latest ranges in HD, LED and 3D tv's, have a look in there, they were really helpful and also offered to order a tv if they didn't have in what i was looking for.'

That seems to go against your advice.

    Sheltieman quote:

'We have a Samsung 40"- picture amazing - but never really been happy with the sound. we bought speakers from geordie robertsons and now we feel we have the complete package. ps we did not buy our tv from Geordie Robertsons as the were not working with tvs at the time - but would highly recommend a visit - and you must try the 3D tv - amazing

Granted he's not bought a TV from there but he's spent money there and seems to think a visit is a good idea.

This may have been true a year or so ago but is not the case now. As others have mentioned, some local retailers are paying attention and have done something about it. Bolts has always gotten a hammering in this kind of topic, but I happened to be in today and couldnt help but notice the more realistic prices, not only that but warm welcome from someone who did know what they were talking about.

    Possibly another.

Okay I'm not great with the quote thing but I reckon I could go into another couple of topics on this board and find different people posting much of the same comments. This is why I think your advice is outdated, wide of the mark and a tad misleading.

    Sleep well.

    Cheers

  3. The media love this kind of story its totally ballooned in the last few days but its no wonder really. The muslim extremists are aptly named, if this guy goes ahead then who knows what will happen. One things for sure I'll would be extremely wary of travelling over the Atlantic in a plane!

    Cheers

  4. I for one reason or another, rightly or wrongly have never been for the Mareel project but seeing the building take shape and thinkin how good it was to sit in a Cinema watching a film last weekend I'm actually looking forward to it now.

I can't say I'm worrying about the costs involved now or wether or not it will have to be subsidised, just looking forward for it openening.

Although I like my music I'm not big into watching bands so that side of it doesn't bother me.

We have so many sports facilities being subsidised at the moment what does it matter if another one is added to the list. At least everyone will have some kind of recreation facility that they use which will have to be publicly funded!

Thats not a sly dig by the way, I think its just realistic.

    Cheers

  5. Don't know if this has been mentioned before but they are closing down their shop. They are still going to be doing electrical contracting work and I think keeping up their repair side which is good.

A pity that's another shop shutting maybe they could have put it on the market to try and find a buyer!

    Cheers

  6. I'm not going to call you a liar Zebbidy but are you seriously telling me that last month out of two shops you mention you only found one Samsung, I very much doubt that.

If you had said you went into Bolts and found no Samsung's then I would understand that as they seem to be very much Sony orientated but anytime I've been in the Hydro or G.R's most of their Tele's are either Samsung, LG and a few lesser known brands.

If you don't have much money to spend thats fair enough but why when other people ask for advice on what to buy/spend your first thought is to say 'Don't buy local' it's far too expensive and there's not much choice?

Clearly from some of the posters above this is not the case!

    Cheers

  7. I wasn't stirring any sh*te Zebbidy! Where did I mention LCD versus anything else? Read the post again.

The point I made was that you're banging on about NOT buying a television up here because of expense and choice, THATS a load of sh*te as previous posters have already stated!!

Just out of interest when it comes to choice when was the last time you were in the Hydro or G.R's Zebbidy? They have a godless amount of televisions on show, I didn't specifically count but there must be 20-30 on show in Robertsons new showroom with someone stating earlier if they don't have it they will try to get it.

Can't say I've been to Bolts lately but the previous poster has stated some positive comments about them too so go and check it out.

    Cheers

  8. I've got a 40" Samsung LED tv, absolutley amazing picture.

I checked all the usual haunts on the internet but none could beat the price i paid at Goerge Robertsons, they've just opened up a floor upstairs with all the latest ranges in HD, LED and 3D tv's, have a look in there, they were really helpful and also offered to order a tv if they didn't have in what i was looking for.

Not sure about the built in dvd players though, i think they just come with the smaller size tv's.

    Goodluck.

ps. Modern Warfare2 on the ps3 is bloody amazing on the LED;)

    JAS,

Just to balance up what Zebbidy said in his post I'm sure you've probably seen the one above!

    Cheers

  9.

GOD NO dont buy a tv up here as you will pay through the teeth for it plus the selection is very limited. Play.com do good deals on tv's with free delivery i have ordered from there before and can recommend them.

the best make of tv's is LG followed closley by sony but samsung have a very good price range and decent tvs

As am sure you stated before Zebbidy you don't get out to do much shopping locally so i'm not surprised by your latest 'anti-local' buying policy.

Some people can't be bothered to go for a look around for good deals JAS but I'm sure you being a fit young man could easily hop skip it to your local retailers and check out the prices then compare to the internet. At least then you've covered all bases. Even Tesco may be worth a look as well....you never know!

Cheers and let us know how you get on!

  10. Very sad times for Orkney. I hope that's as far north as they will go. The last thing we need is a Weatherspoons.

Just take a look around over the winter at the empty pubs and then decide if we need another licensed premises. Many of the pubs are very quiet during the week.

No point posting that here mate. As long as people can get something for even a couple o quid cheaper nowadays it doesn't seem to matter what effect it will have locally, now or in the future!

I went into a Weatherspoons down the road last weekend and to be perfectly honest IMO (of course) its just another restaraunt selling mediocre, processed food, churning out plate after plate!

    Cheers

  11. Frankie, read the posters OP I think you'll find my answer was correct in relation to what he asked.

If you're laying new floors and doors or a bit of decorating you don't have to inform anyone. If your doing electrical, plumbing/heating work you don't need to inform the authorities all you need is a qualified person to carry out the work or if you want to do it yourself get someone qualified to 'test' the system and inspect your work!

    Cheers

  12. Reading that report it doesn't sound fair at all but why do the scottish markets just not take the fish and make them land back home in their own country?

Maybe that would make no differance at all but surely it would be a big inconveniance to them. Are the markets in Iceland and Faroe as lucrative as they are here?

On another note, did the Scottish and Irish fleets not 'top up' their fish quotas with 'black' fish not so long ago?

I admit to not knowing a terrible lot about the fishing industry in Scotland as a whole, just what I read in the papers but the whole system seems to be a big can of worms from political and logistical reasons.

    Cheers
