If you read OSCR’s letter you will see that holding a referendum wasn’t the problem – it was the fact that one of the options offered as a question was, if implemented by the SCT, illegal under Scottish Charity law.

Cluness was in favour of the illegal option both as a question and as an outcome from the referendum and thereby putting the whole chartable status of the Trust at risk.

    quote from OSCR letter

"must also stress that we have no objection to charities consulting the people they benefit or any other interested parties on constitutional matters – indeed we have on occasions advised charities to do exactly this. We were pleased to see SCT’s trustees consult earlier this year on their revised governance proposals.

What is not compatible with their duties as charity trustees however, is the spending of charitable assets asking the people of Shetland to vote on options which the trustees themselves know to be unacceptable in terms of charity law."

  2. I'd like to see SeaCargo get it because at least there might be the possibility of a Norway link.

A link to Norway would be great but extremly unlikely.

Simply not enough freight and passenger numbers - We produce and export very little that they need, and anything we need would be too expensive to buy and import from Norway. Also the very high harbour charges at Lerwick was a big factor in the demise of the previous service by Smyril.

  3. Yeh, saw this and simply think that OSCR should bog off and leave Shetland to make its own decisions.

Typical Scottish heirarchy trying to interfere in Shetland's affairs and make Shetland fit their mould.....

I'm not saying things are perfect but think it's the people of Shetland who should make the decisons regarding any changes, if wanted.

OSCR is only upholding the charities law and by doing so is protecting the funds belonging to the Shetland people from maladministration. Because the trustees are refusing to follow their own legal advice as well as that of OSCR yet wish to remain a charity they are guilty of misconduct. They could of course ask not to have charitable status for Shetland’s money and then could spend the money as they please and of course be liable to tax.

  4. I remember in the 1980s Thatcher was pushing for Public Sector workers to give up their public sector pensions and buy into wonderful private pension schemes – a fact that the Thatcher twins Cameron & Clegg (and their yapping dug Carmichael) conveniently forget when they say how hard done by the private sector is compared to the public sector.

  5. think you will find there is very little commercial value in offering a service to Faroe from Shetland. All previous services have had to stop due to an almost complete lack of uptake.

In actual fact the Stanstead – Shetland - Faeroe service was well used, particularly the Stanstead -Shetland leg by tourists. The problem was a very foggy summer at Sumburgh resulted a lot of passengers being carried on to Faeroe where they had to be accommodated an flown back to Shetland when weather cleared.

  6. The FairFuelUK Parliamentary debate took place on the afternoon of Tuesday 15th November. The event attracted massive media interest. Our spokesman Quentin Willson put our case on BBC Breakfast, Sky Sunrise and ITV Daybreak. That was just a start! The FairFuelUK team did over 50 regional radio interviews and TV interviews during the day and the issue was in every major newspaper. This level of media interest is vital if we are to be successful in putting pressure on the MPs and Ministers. Some of our supporters also ended up telling their particular stories on the media. Neither the debate nor the attendant vital media coverage could have been achieved without your support.

During the debate, MP after MP told the House of Commons about how their constituents were suffering. The Government was left in no doubt about the strength of feeling on this issue.

Rumours are swirling around Westminster that the Government is trying to find ways of scrapping the 3p per litre fuel duty rise planned for January – one of our key demands. We will not know if these rumours are true until the Chancellor of the Exchequer gives his Autumn Statement on the afternoon of 29th November. In the run up to that statement, we will be posting news on the www.fairfueluk.com website and the @FairFuelUK twitter account to include details of the FairFuelUK survey we have launched today. Here are details of how you can get involoved:

FAIRFUELUK SURVEY: How would you answer this question? If the Government were deciding between cutting the 50p tax rate that people on high earnings pay, or reducing fuel duty; which would you prefer? This is just 1 of the 8 questions in the FairFuelUK Survey. As part of our campaign pressure on the Government prior to the Autumn Statement, we wish to publish a summary report on what you think about the Government options on this issue. Please visit www.fairfueluk.com/survey.html and let us know what you feel by completing the FairFuelUK Survey. The results will be sent to the Treasury, MPs and the media next week.

Whatever happens in the Autumn Statement, FairFuelUK will keep campaigning for you. Even if the 3p fuel duty rise is scrapped, petrol and diesel will still be scandalously expensive. If its isn’t scrapped, we will increase the pressure even further.

As ever, the more people that sign up to www.fairfueluk.com, the louder and more effective our voice becomes. So please, pass on this message to family, friends and contacts urging them to sign up and to follow us on Twitter - @FairFuelUK

Thanks again for all your support in the fight for lower petrol and diesel prices

    Very kind regards

  7. It's well known that airport food is over-priced and probably not the best quality, Sumburgh is not alone in that fact, have you been to Aberdeen airport lately??

Manners do cost nothing as said. The 2 original posters seem to be regulars to the airport so they know the score as to food quality, price and manners but seem to keep going back. It was only pointed out after that 1 had indeed complained to management albeit a letter, why not grab the phone and speak to the horses mouth?

I was only offering an alternative, I don't like Liquorice Allsorts and I know it so thats why I don't keep buying them!

Obviously you have a problem understanding plain English.

So I will write in short sentences.

This will make it easier for you.

My first post was a reply to the original post.

In my first post I did add the information that I had complained.

My complaint was made to the point of sale i.e. the cafe.

    This is normal practice.

Another post suggested that I had not complained to cafe management.

I replied that I had indeed complained to management at the first opportunity.

    I complained by letter.

This is the normal way to complain to a company about one of its outlets.

The reason I go back to the airport is that it is the commercial airport in Shetland.

The reason I use the cafe is that it is the only food outlet in the airport.

Your solution to bad food and service is not to use the cafe.

The cafe closed under previous management.

Perhaps it closed because a lot of travellers have taken your advice.

  8. Guyz, I bet you havn't complained to the management even though you've used this service regularly and continue to do so and continue to be dissapointed!

If the food and service is so bad then why keep using it, you know you are going on the plane so why not eat before you head to Sumburgh or take something with you.

The food there is not the best value and I know this before I go but it still doesn't stop me eating there. The man in question is always polite enough to me but then again I'm quite polite to him!

The chap flew into a rage when I pointed out that the food was still frozen and I had politely asked for a replacement.

I did write and complain to the management on my return to Shetland – and got very short shrift from them. I can see why they are now ex-management.

That's a really good idea - I'll take a picnic lunch and a thermos with me next time, and if the plane is delayed by a few hours I can hire a taxi to fetch me a takeaway from Lerwick.

In fact I can take a black bag and cleaning materials to the airport as well so that I can clean the tables and your friend won't have his cosy chats with airport staff interrupted.

  9. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I too have to use it a lot and absolutely agree – the coffee is ok but for the rest of it.......

The person you mention has an attitude problem and prefers to chat to other airport staff rather than serve customers or clear tables. I once complained that a bannock I got with my soup had just come out of the freezer (it was solid inside) and this guy threw a wobbly when I took it back and asked for another.

  10. I wonder if VE have taken into account the rising cost of copper.

It currently stands around £6200 per ton, and set to increase further.

Oh silly me, we will be paying for it in our electric bills

Phew! i was worried there for a minute.

Not a problem anymore - apparently there is a new type of turbine in use at Burradale that does not require any wind to make it turn.

  11. Part of the trouble with these and other disturbances is, in my opinion, is that some people, especially but not exclusively young people, have lost any respect for the police since part of the force are behaving like thugs. I think this dates back to the miners strike when gangs of violent police thugs attacked miners who were taking part in a legitimate dispute.

No this is not thuggery you are an apologist for - it is murder, arson and planned looting. No action by the police now or in the past justifies this.

  12. As I understand it the Scottish Regional Assembly can only hold a referendum to ask for a mandate for the Scottish government to negotiate terms for Scotland to leave the United Kingdom. If that referendum is won and suitable terms negotiated, then there will have to be a another referendum (called by Westminster) to see if those terms are agreeable to the populace before Scotland can leave the UK.

Where Shetland sits in all of this is a moot point. Also lets not assume that Norway would wish to to take on responsibility for Shetland.

  13. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

A Shetland independence party called the Shetland Movement has been tried in the recent past and was totally rejected by voters – indeed much of Shetland’s present SIC turmoil and catalogue of financial disasters is principally due to individuals from that movement.

Shetland is and will be much better off remaining part of the UK with or without the Scots.

  14. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is ruled by the monarch and is governed by a democratically elected government so Scotland in fact hasn’t been ‘ruled’ by Westminster or “another people†for the last 300 years. The country we all belong to is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Scotland is a self-administering region of that country.

As far as history goes it was Westminster that got rid of the heinous Truck system that the Scots and the Scots alone imposed on Shetland. If Scotland had been independent during the Second World War there is no doubt the outcome of that conflict would have been very different.

There are so many strategic, economic and social threads binding the UK together that even if it were possible to unpick them, as the fantasist Salmond believes, it would be economic suicide for the region of Scotland. And before we start on about the UK oil revenues - these belong to all the people of the UK. It isn’t Scotland’s oil and it isn’t Shetland’s oil. An independence seeking Scotland would have to negotiate a share of the oil revenues that would certainly be a lot less that it gets from the UK government at the moment.

  15. @stromtrow totally agree wi de daer! alwaes saed lerook cood big wan skool fur hitsel, as i saed afoar hits no da gret muckle sprawlin metropolis dat hit liks ta tink hit is...

I wonder, do you ever feel like a person on a soap-box talking to an audience of 1 - yourself? (2 maybe, if you include Groilick)....

Point to Note: I don't really read what you write, but I certainly would if you gave consideration to the large audience you certainly have and to refrain from being totally selfish...

You never know, but both of you may have something very useful to say?

A little bit of the Shetland Dialect is really great - if used correctly and spelt accurately...., :)

That's all this time folks....

It would appear that your zeal to stay off topic to denigrate the Shetland dialect is only exceeded by your ability to ignore the T&Cs of this forum and defy the moderators’ instructions.
