  1. My daughter was once told to either be quiet or leave the garrison while watching a film. I thought it entirely reasonable - as a cinema-goer myself, it's damned annoying when others spoil the film. Yes she'd paid the ticket price - but so had everyone else there and they weren't spoiling the film for everyone else. It seems to me that she was treated as a noisy individual, as was your son. As has been mentioned, maybe take him when he's a little older and able to sit through a film. As an aside, when I lived south I had a good friend with tourettes. He always waited for the films to come out on video (no DVDs then!) because he was considerate to the other people in the cinema. The funny thing was when he watched a film he very rarely said anything, but he didn't want to risk it.

  2. Guardian in a previous article said 19 yr old called Daniel allegedly.

Ah the power of Facebook... arrest location is already up! Mods, keep an eye on this thread - no-one wants names and addresses on here.

According to various websites he is supposed to be a 23 yr old from Sweden, and the name you posted matches.

    I guess time will tell!

  3. Does anybody know if there are still tickets left for Bjon Again?

The link MIM posted says it is sold out, but the Tall Ships home page and the Box Office site says there are still some available. I'm suspecting MIM's linked page has not been updated after the first batch sold out.

It's just that I know someone who was looking for one.

If the box office says they are available, I would go with that. After all, they are the ones that are selling them and have the most up to date info.

  4. thanks for the info guys .. maybe the booklet should have explained this

I have spoken to quite a few folk today who were wondering the same!

    Page 1 of the booklet:

Join us for the spectacular Cruise in Company and take in some of the most stunning scenery and hospitality along Scotland's west coast and islands.

Ships participating in the Tall Ships Race 2011 will cruise at their leisure between Greenock and Lerwick (Shetland) from 12 to 21 July 2011. They have the opportunity to call in at no less than 12 guest harbours along the way. Campbelltown, Port Ellen (Isle of Islay), Oban, Ullapool, Stornoway, Kirkwall and Stromness (Orkney), Fair Isle, Scalloway, Cullivoe, Baltasound and Whalsay (all Shetland) have pulled out all the stops to give their visitors a very special welcome. Please read on to find out more about each port and a full programme of the events that are planned.

I'm really not sure how much more explanation is required.

  5. Not true. Colin is quite clear on the point that he doesn't wish people to write in dialect

Not strictly true. Go back and read what I wrote and don't read into it what isn't there.

Icepick should do as I (and an awful lot of others) do.

I just don't read the cr*p posted in 'da dialect'.

Posters should realise that, this may be a Shetland forum but, it's read by an awful lot of others as well.

Posting in your 'native' tongue and expecting everyone else to pat you on the back for it is just ignorance.

I've been on Shetland more than 30 years so, I understand what is being written in the local dialect.. I just don't bother reading it.

I wonder just how many valid and interesting points have been missed because of this. You can be a 'Shetlander' if you wish, you can even be a proud(?) Shetlander , you might even aspire to being a redneck as well for all I care but, please, remember that these newsgroups are read by lots of people from outside Shetland.

As I said earlier, deliberately excluding any number of people from your opinions, be they valid or otherwise, is just plain ignorance.

What would you say if I started posting in Welsh? Would you even try and read it? After all, a damned site more people speak Welsh than Shetland.

You have had a couple of requests to post in plain English, I just wish you would do so.

    Okay, duly re-read.

I admit, I was wrong. You don't state that you wish shetlanders not to type in dialect. But it is certainly implied.

I think that blaming others for your shortcomings (your unwillingness to try to read anothers post and then blame it on them for choosing to use the local dialect) is quite ignorant as well, actually.

  6. Nobody is seeking to stop you speaking/and or writing in dialect

Not true. Colin is quite clear on the point that he doesn't wish people to write in dialect

but you should appreciate that you are limiting the numbers of those likely to respond to such postings in Shetlink.

I do appreciate that, I don't think any shetland-speakers have disputed that point, but I could be wrong.

  7. A little bit of the Shetland Dialect is really great - if used correctly and spelt accurately...., :)

That's all this time folks....

I didna keyn dat shaetlan hed a proper wye tae spell hit. I ayways towt dat hit wis maestly spoken, an dat fok spelt it foo dey heard it.

(But there is a new thread for the dialect aspect of the conversation, maybe your post would be better there)

  8. from the SIC website
If you have any bulky items, please take them to the Gremista Waste Management Facility and Recycling Centre in Lerwick, where they can be disposed of free of charge.
Oh it is that easy is it?. Except like lots of other Lerwick residents I do not have any sort of vehicle and if I hire a man with a van to transport my bruck to the site I understand it then is regarded as trade waste and the man will have to pay to dump it. A cost that will be passed onto me.

Thats not true. I have just phoned them to clarify this point, as it is one that you have made twice with nothing to back it up. They said if you hired someone to take it away it would still be classified as household waste and be disposed of free of charge.

  9. What would you say if I started posting in Welsh? Would you even try and read it? After all, a damned site more people speak Welsh than Shetland.

Ummm.... missing the point much? Posting in Welsh on a Shetland forum would be a patently ridiculous thing to do.

But would you have a similar issue if people posted in Welsh on a forum specifically for Wales?

Or would you be more likely to side with the Welsh-speakers that were being told that they should post in English to make themselves understood?

  10. I don't drink coffe, and I've never been in a Starbucks. If I was to choose a coffee shop for here, I would choose Costa Coffee, purely because their fruit coolers are quite lovely.

As for MacDonalds. My children have been there twice. The first time because they had been lured into believing the hype and so when we were south we took them there, at their request.

The second time they were it was because there was nowhere else available for us to go to in the time we had available, and they were seriously unhappy with the prospect.

I don't think Shetland has much to gain by having chain food places. In fact I'm not convinced anywhere gains from them, really. One of the best bits when you go to new places is trying out the local cuisine, and Maccy D's just doesn't cut it.

  11. I will leave that to others.

Are you disagreeing with my suggestions, though?

Not as such, but I'm not convinced that any commercial radio station within the confines of Shetland would have enough advertising revenue to pay for the staff for what you are looking for.

Maybe you should approach him with your ideas with a possibility of becoming a volunteer?
