  1. It's not discriminatory at all. You already have the facility in the form of the dump near you. Do you think the community skips go door to door? We in the country still need to transport our bulk rubbish to the skip somehow, and for many it will be further than your trip to the dump.

  2. But surely an areas history is the good and the bad?

I have visited the Anne Frank House, which was one of the most poignant and memorable 'tourist attractions' I have been to. Auschwitz is also open as a memorial and a museum.

I'm not sure though, how much information there is at Belmont about it's history and that of Thomas Mouat, but it is certainly been completed to a high standard and is a credit to the people that worked on it.

  3. I've been planning a trip away at fairly short notice, and for the three of us I am paying £168 on the boat - cabin one way - and £45 return for the train, whereas the airfare would have been £511. If I had added the cabin the other way I would still be paying under £300. Flying to Aberdeen instead was not much less - £430, plus I would still have had to add £45.

  4. The "instructions" on the label do say "once opened use within 2 days".

Okay, so why did this happen:

    Open it (fine)

    1 day (on turn)

    2 days (off)

It hasn't happened to every new container of milk I have had, but

    a) It's not good enough and

    B) There was never this problem with the old containers

  5. So unlinked student, why have I never had this problem before?

And honestly, to be on the turn the day after you open it isn't really acceptable when it is 5 days in date. Shetland milk was always usable a day past the best before date before these new cartons.

I'm not sure why people are trying to imply there is no problem, as it is obvious there is, as several people are having the same issue - where there was no issue before.

  6. That would be the era I was last in the Thule too. The thing which always amused me was the "No Dogs" sign on the door, which some wit had altered to read "No Bogs" - and if you were female, I think it was true?!

No bogs as in marshes, but there was certainly female toilets the last time I bravely ventured into the Thule. A few years ago now, certainly. There weren't in the main bar bit, but out the door by the pool table - IIRC.

  7. My fridge hasn't changed temperature since the carton change, and I buy the biggest size container of milk. I have never had this problem with local milk before now, so I can't think that it is due to the processing of the milk. Local milk has always outlasted the date before now in my experience. I have emailed the dairy, but no response as yet.

  8. For sure they are profiteering.

When the duty was reduced by 1p, the fuel price was reduced by 1p.

It should have been reduced by 1.2p as there is VAT on fuel duty. But all the garages here do their prices to .9 of a penny, never .7 or .4 or whatever. Always always rounded up - unlike garages south.

  9. I wouldn't worry too much - I have seen plenty bands play on rivalries before - Manchester audience are better than Birmingham etc . Having said that there was at least one ass near the front that was being a total turd with his heckling. If it was funny it would have been ok, but it was just really unnecessary and disrespectful.

  10. Gay people will never be 'accepted'.

It is still not and should not be 'socially acceptable'.

I think you should amend your statement.

You may not ever accept gay people (and shame on you if that is the case), but please do not speak for me or the many other non-bigoted people that take people for who they are, and not for what they do behind closed doors.

Sexuality is something that is, and as such is not 'right or wrong', the potential for 'wrong' is how you behave within the confines of who you are. There is nothing wrong with any two consenting adults enjoying each other in private, regardless of gender (unless there are other issues at play such as adultery or incest).

  11. Bloomin nora, there are a bunch of moaning minnies on here sometimes.

I want to make a minor contribution to try and balance the scales a little.

    Today, my appreciation goes to:

    1) Davie Gardner. It's partly down to his previous hard work and good reputation that we get big name artists wanting to play here - if the names that came had not enjoyed it, word would get around. Instead we are seeing more great names coming. The Newton Faulkner gig was amazing, truly one of the best I have been too. I can't wait to see Mumford and Sons, and to find out what is in the pipeline. Thanks Davie.

    2) The mods and admins of Shetlink. It's a bit of a thankless task trying to keep us unruly lot under control - debates get heated, people say things that are unfair/personal/libellous and don't necessarily appreciate it if it gets modded. These guys try and keep things on the straight and narrow for no reward other than the wellbeing and future of shetlink. So thanks all!

Feel free to add your appreciation to whoever and whatever you want :)

  12. I'm always surprised its not a more popular choice in Shetland, especially where children travel quite far to school, or even have to board during the week.

It's no surprise. We have excellent schools here and all children that I have discussed home education (which admittedly is limited to my children and a few of their friends, one of which has been home educated) with would prefer to go to school than be home educated, and certainly when I was at school I had friends that stayed in the hostels that loved coming down to Lerwick and although the experience of the hostel itself was mixed, I don't think many would have chosen to be home educated as an alternative.

  13. Glad you all got your tickets, now who's going to tidy up the mess you all left on da street? sleeping bags, empty beer cans, bottles, buscuits, litter, blankets etc.

    (** mod edit - comment removed **)

Praise be to the street cleaners who diligently hung around awaiting your dispersal to tidy up after you. (** mod edit - comment removed **)

Please don't tar everyone with the same brush. Noone near where I was queuing left any mess at all. The mess was very much focussed on the area in front of smiths and jamiesons, and as far as I could tell was by a relatively small group of people. The area from jamiesons and up, where the majority of us were, was free from litter.

  14. Having worked in schools ... What happens is that the holiday is taken on a different day, usually after the local Up Helly Aa at no extra cost to the council.

I am confused. Which UHA other than Lerwick is not on a Friday or Saturday? How can school holidays be taken on Saturdays or Sundays?

Is there really any up helly aa that doesn't have a Monday following it?

    I think that's highly unlikely

  15. I personally can't take a days leave, teachers can't, no unpaid leave either.

Seems the rest of the country can manage it?

So SIC, why waste money for people to recover from UHA hangovers? Surely that's crazy? Promoting binge drinking by allowing a day off LOL! But money wasting an SIC is another very long thread

BTW I'm no Royalist, the whole country is skint not just SIC.

    1) Teachers can't, but I am sure the school can organise their timetables to have the entire school watching the wedding, should they so wish.

    2) 'The rest of the country' - thats a very broad generalisation, and one that isn't true. Many employers are not giving this public holiday to their staff, and they are perfectly entitled to do so.

    3) 'promoting binge drinking' - thats a stretch. Up Helly Aa is a long festival, that goes on all night. There are plenty that drink, and there are always a few that fall by the wayside, but actually I find Lerwick Up Helly Aa to be less about 'bingle drinking' than a normal Friday or Saturday night, because people have to last. It would be shameful not to allow a day off for what is one of Shetland's top attractions. Surely you wouldn't expect people to go and go a good day's work after leaving the hall at 8am??

Up Helly Aa brings money to the islands, it is certainly not a 'waste of money'.

If you, as you claim, are not a royalist then why are you so keen to have the day off anyway?? It sounds like you just want a skive....
