North, you have misunderstood - Rodney merely had conversations with a survivor [now deceased] of the Spanish Civil War. There was no claim that he actually fought.

I am advised that a book by Tom Buchanan, 'Britain and the Spanish Civil War'. Cambridge UP 1997. has a reference on p.66 to the "Motherwell socialist David Murray" speaking at a meeting in the Outer Hebrides and saying that "People of Spain are very like the people of Lewis" - the source for this is given as the Stornoway Gazette of 10-1-38. Does anybody have access to a copy of the Gazette of this date? It may give names of the organisers etc.

I understand that in the mid-1930's there may have been some activity by the Communist Party in Shetland. Does anybody have any evidence/recollection of this? Perhaps newspapers/leaflets etc? Was there ever a CP member/group in the area? I am particularly interested in agitation relating to the Spanish Civil War 1936-39
