Events Calendar
Now, after a bit of fiddling the "Events Calendar" is back online for users to add their community events too! You'll notice a "+ Post your event" button in the top right hand corner ideally. Just follow the instructions.
The idea is that it's a community based calendar of events - not an advertising medium for local businesses.
We'll see how well that's listened to 0_o

Heya,
As some of you might have noticed you can now login to Shetlink using either your Twitter or your Facebook login. Should you fancy you can connect these accounts to Shetlink; for instance to get your classifieds out to a wider audience.
-
Edit 2: Oh, yeah. The reason I was looking for the edit button. I notice the sign-up date is gone from below the avatar pic. Any particular reason for that?
Heya,
It's still there but, it's in your brand spanky new personal profile page with all your other gubbins.

Hi .. the contact form is having a rest at the moment. Back v soon. Fire any of the moderation team or the Omnipresent Admin a PM and someone will get back to you.

Again thank you for your patience in the conversion of the original Shetlink software to the new setup.
Unfortunately, the largest and most unforeseen issue arose around the PM system. Again there has been some teething problems and the system has been completely purged rather than allow it to go as it stood.
What does this mean? Any new PM's sent today have also unfortunately been deleted.
The bonus; rather a trite one, is the database isn't clogged to the hilt but, yes not ideal in circumstances where Shetlink users have been communicating on items in the classifieds section.
Anyhow. Shetlink trusts this can be overseen for the new setup and interesting new features available.
Hope you enjoy.

Thank you all for your patience.
Shetlink was undergoing a bit of a face-lift but, unfortunately there were issues in the migration to LIVE. After much deliberation and a little screaming! - It was felt best to roll-back to the current format whilst further testing is undertaken rather than leave the site in limbo.
This small face pretty much says it all --->
Anyway - continue as before whilst we get out the emergency muckle hammer and start beating both the tech dude profusely and the Shetlink site itself in a fit of disgust!
Please be aware we'll be heading back towards 'the same fun' as soon as. We'll provide fair warning.

The number of people living on Scottish islands has risen by 4% to 103,702, according to the latest census figures.
According to the census, which took place on 27 March 2011, islanders represented 2% of the population.
The largest numbers could be found on Lewis and Harris, which recorded 21,031 residents - an increase of more than 5.5% since 2001.
The census is carried out every 10 years. In 2011, Scotland's population stood at 5.2 million.
Where island populations rose
Lewis and Harris - up 6%
Shetland mainland - up 7%
Orkney mainland - up 12%
Skye - up 8%
A total of 110 islands are classified as "inhabited" for official purposes, with 17 having no residents on 2011 census day.
Fifty islands saw an increase in population between 2001 and 2011 - including three which had been zero in 2001.
Danna, Eilean da Mheinn, Inchfad, Inner Holm and Soay were each recorded as having just one resident.
Registrar General Tim Ellis said: "The population of the Scottish islands has increased over the last 10 years, however much of this increase is a result of the sizable population increases in Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles.
"Some of the other larger islands such as Bute, Arran and Islay have seen population decrease over the decade."
Intriguing 'statistic' there for Shetland. Note the word 'mainland'. Wonder what proportions were from any of the Isles against migratory population shift from UK mainland and or further afield?

Intriguing things afoot in Salmon:
WWF Scotland hails new salmon industry bodyWWF Scotland has welcomed the news that an international body for the world’s salmon industry will be launched today.
The Global Salmon Initiative (GSI), to be announced in Norway, will be headed by 15 leading farmed salmon farm producers from across the world.
About 70% of farmed salmon producers across the globe will be represented by the organisation.
The GSI companies, from Scotland, Canada, Chile and Norway, intend to develop the sustainability of their industry by boosting co-operation and transparency.
WWF Scotland Director Lang Banks said: “It’s good to hear that more salmon producers are pledging to operate more sustainably and reduce their impacts on the environment.
“This announcement now means that almost two-thirds of all Scottish and UK farmed salmon production is being put on a path to becoming more sustainable.
Confidence
“Along with existing schemes highlighting responsibly caught wild fish we hope more producers backing sustainability schemes, such as the Aquaculture Steward Council (ASC), will give consumers the confidence to make the best choices when buying farmed seafood.
“In time, we expect to see major retailers only choose to buy farmed seafood that comes from certified sources such as the ASC. As a result, fish farms that refuse to change their ways may eventually find they cannot find a route to market.â€
Alf-Helge Aarskog, co-chair of GSI, explained that the new organisation would help solve the problems that arise from the growing demand for salmon products around the world while also addressing the concerns from environmentalists about the impact of salmon farms on wild fish numbers.
He said: “It’s always a challenge to balance increasing demand and sustainability, but by focusing on (the) best practice between the producers by being transparent and report on what we do, and also improve on our practices, I think we can do both.
“I think it’s important for the public to understand the tremendous commitment these 15 companies are putting in to actually make a change in the way we operate and to make things better.
Sustainability
“That’s a good way to secure salmon supply for the future and going forward for all consumers.â€
The GSI will focus on three areas of sustainability to improve on: reducing environmental impact, increasing social contribution and maintaining economic growth.
As a priority, the challenges of biosecurity, sourcing feed and meeting industry standards will be addressed.
Dr Stewart McLelland, chief executive of the Scottish Salmon Company and member of GSI, said: “It’s really about a philosophy of co-operation and really wanting to work together to improve our environmental sustainability.
“I think what’s really unique about this initiative, it allows us to share our experience on the main stage with the global agriculture industry collaborating and sharing knowledge.
‘Excellent product’
“We’ve got an excellent product in Scotland, it’s one of our few world-class industries, it’s sold globally, it’s a very nutritious product, it’s great to eat, it’s very healthy, we want to grow that business, but we want to do it sustainably and I think what this initiative allows us to do is have transparency in how we achieve that.â€
The GSI will work closely with industry partners including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations with the aim to expand sustainable aquaculture as a source of food protein for the world’s growing population.
According to the latest figures from 2011, 1.6 million tonnes of salmon came from farms and 930,000 tonnes of wild salmon were caught and the biggest markets for the produce are Europe, the US and Japan.

Is anyone else getting bombarded with advertising links on here? Am getting hacked off with it.
What kind of advertising "links" do you mean? Are you just meaning the adverts that appear at the side and at the top?
Remember - Shetlink is entirely supported through advertising being displayed / donations made by thoughtful users

My my.
The word 'article' in my post should have been plural.
Whilst you're creating a 'nice' archival thread it's somewhat lacking objectivity, no? By all means carry on but, if you have a campaign do please share.
Given your disingenuous somewhat snide manner i can only assume that you have no personal experience of Atos or know of anyone who is suffering as a result of their incompetency.
? eh? Your sterling interpretation there m8ty.
As I said previously, fire on with your copy and paste 'campaign' by all means. It might have some more effect should you put you own 'personal' '3rd party' spin to it too.
Stand back for a minute and have a ponder.

Here, you don't fancy maybe giving a short excerpt and then perhaps giving, say, a breakdown of your opinion against the article you've copied? Might give more leverage and a greater understanding to whatever you're trying to achieve?

sheltie123 - welcome to the Shetlink forum.
Great thread here - Forum use - guidelines and netiquette to have a look through.

Ooh .. you don't want them
Basically, it's a way for the moderation team to increment a users warning points and show to the community how not to act per se.
The idea of Shetlink was an online community that'd ideally attempt to travel along the lines of Forum use - guidelines and netiquette and Terms & Conditions / Privacy Policy along with just some general manners and common sense!
An online sitting room, if you will, one where people can come in and enjoy themselves.
