People complain about lobbyists and pressure groups but there is some value to petitioning the authorities. Perhaps the debate about what flag should or should not be flown could instead be spun off to be used as an experiment in direct democracy. We elect politicians to represent the constituencies we inhabit and they on our behalf vote on dozens of issues, that's why their political stance matters so much to us. Perhaps the town hall could have some system where registered voters can select what flag or combinations thereof should be displayed. if the system is developed and tested for this application it could be expanded to other things.
