  1. I think I passed at least five trucks and busses today, all covered in lots of blue lights on the front. Why?

    Angus,

What is the Law on displaying Blue Lights on vehicles other than emergency vehicles?

I think that you should do some form of education to these truck companies.

I witnessed 3 cars pull over to the side of the road as we all saw Blue lights coming around a bend, just to find out it was a truck, lit up like a christmas tree with blue LED lights.

  2. Maybe midget does want to know!

No one mentioned workers from south either, What about the workers sacked last weekend after smashing a mans head through the window of a car they were workers from south! What about the ones pissing in the middle of the mid brae on the floor and over peoples legs or super glueing peoples glasses to the tables and looking for a fight before walking around in the pub naked? Yes it's often locals causing trouble but it's also workers from south, Although not all of them, a lot of them are quite decent and out for a good time, A lot of people don't want to go out in brae now after peoples drinks being spiked if they do they are having to sit with a hand covering the top of the glass, i don't think that was a problem before!

Maybe you should be telling this to the Times, as according to Shetlands "top" police officer, there has been no crime associated with the sooth workers.

  3. @Smileyface

All you are doing is keeping this in the public eye and all you are doing is encouraging others to speak about it. **** is getting slagged off more now than ever... Well Done!!

You have some very funny idea's, when it comes to UHA, I suggest you get your facts right before coming on here and try to prove a point.

  4. He could and probably did put a damper on the jarls day by phoning him in the middle of the night, as an ex jarl he should have known better.

He maybe needed his peerie glasses tae see the time cos it wis da back o eleven at night alledgedly. And incidentally is eleven o`clock at night not an inconvenient time of night for a member of the Up Helly Aa Committee to approach a member of the public to inform them they are going to be featured on the Bill in the morning.

I am sorry, but this is rubbish, most people dont know they are on the bill until UHA morning. Whit makes him so special? Why are you making an issue of this? Surely **** would be wanting this whole mess to die down? After all its down to him that its been brought up again! As another ex-jarl stated in the paper, if **** had kept his head down and laughed it off then it would all be forgotten about. Its his OWN actions that have caused a stir.

  5. An Article put on the Bill that was an ongoing legal matter that had not been dealt with by the legal system should never have been put on the Bill in the first place. Big **** told about the Article on the Bill at 11.00pm on the Monday night prior to Up Helly Aa Day by a member of The Up Helly A Committee. What reaction did they expect? A well done boy`s? 15 angry Committee boys angry the Bill had to be changed and decide a 10 year Ban is an acceptable penalty. 15 Committee boys against 1 man. As far as I`m aware Big **** was unwell at the time the Article went on the Bill. What kind of a Committee is this? Certainly not a proffesional one.[/b]

Nah Nah... Get a grip! **** hasnt been the first to feature on the bill for a "criminal matter" and I am damn sure he winna be the last.

Many people have been on the bill and no found out until UHA morning.

As an ex-jarl I would have expected better behavior from him (IMHO). Like most things grin and bare it. No go round and behave like a spoiled child.

  6. Another effect would be the emergency landing area, there is no way a helicopter could land so close to a school.

Valid point! Where will this be moved to? The whole idea of putting the heli-pad there is so that it is close to the Hospital. What will happen to the 10's of £1000's invested in that. I would imagine this hasn't even been thought about or taken into consideration.

  7. Grantfield exit has junction markings (not roundabout entry markings)on it which means you have to give way to traffic on a major road.

Well of all people you would have thought the police were aware of what road markings meant.

Now bare in mind i wasn't there, i have purely been told by someone that was, the police car had no lights or sirens on, it purely pulled out in front of the pathway of the car which was already on the roundabout causing an accident.

Anyone else and i would hazard a guess that they will be in court shortly... will much come of this given it was the police? I doubt it.

Still as stated, I would never want to be in this position of my word against the polices.

  8. A peerie birdy tells me that there was a small accident today at Grantfield this afternoon when a police car came shooting out onto the roundabout to try and catch someone and instead of looking the officer put is foot down trying to pull out and instead ended up with a car planted in the side of his, coz he never gave way to the traffic already using the roundabout.

Any truth in this or is it the Shetland Rumour mill at its best again. :?

  9. Just been looking at the plans for this.

The only question that sticks in my mind is how will it work being so close to the helipad. Does it effect this?

Ive seen a few times the helicopters coming in right over the top of the camp site, im not sure how it will work with a 3 story building in the way.

  10. The police station is fully staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, the counter is not - it is open 8am-midnight Sunday-Thursday and to 4am on Friday & Saturday nights. The reason it was closed on Saturday during the day was due to staff holidays, but it was open from 6pm onwards, which is the busier part of a Saturday.

If you arrive at the police station and the door is closed (which can happen during lunch breaks, etc) all you have to do is phone the number on the sign on the door and you will be put through to whoever is answering the phones. They can then radio a Shetland officer to come back to the station to speak to you if they are available. Likewise, if you phone in and get put through to a different station, just tell them what you need and they will immediately pass on your message to a local officer.

There is no need for 24 hour counter cover in Lerwick, but be assured there is always 24 hour police cover.

Thank-you for the Info... Anonymous Police Worker!

However your version of events seems far to straight forward and easy. Sorry to say it but in reality this does NOT happen and it isnt as simple as this.

  11. Oh and on the earlier point of A&E. Orkney doesn't have one and they seem to manage ok.

    Casualty & Outpatients Department

    About the Department

The main duties of this department are dealing with casualties as well as holding a varied selection of outpatient clinics.

    Casualty

Casualties range from the very minor to more serious trauma. Most can be dealt with in the outpatient treatment room but more serious cases have to be admitted to the wards and/or taken to the main theatre.

It would appear they do!?

  12. Is it just this weekend or is the station closed every weekend?

Its closed at nights as well. There is usually a poster on the door that says its closed and if its an emergency then dial 999! :?

Its a bloody joke, at the weekends we often have to phone for the police (nature of job) and when you phone the local number you get put through to Someone in Wick, Thurso, Orkney or Inverness, we given up phoning now.

Among the reforms insurers want to see are:

A ban on learners being able to take an intensive driving course as their only method of passing

The introduction of a new "graduated" licence for the first six months after passing a test

During this time the number of young passengers that a newly-qualified driver could carry would be restricted

They would also be banned from driving between 11:00pm and 4:00am for the first six months, unless they were driving to and from work or college

There would be no blood alcohol allowed during those first six months

But young drivers would be able to start learning earlier, at the age of 16 and a half.

  14. May 28th, 2012

Two young men had to be airlifted from the island at the south end of Clickimin Loch in the early hours of Sunday morning during the Relay for Life event.

The pair had been on the loch in a dinghy which had deflated, and although they made it to the isle safely, they needed help getting off.

The emergency services were called and Lerwick police alerted Shetland Coastguard shortly before 1am to say the aircraft was needed. However, at the same time the Sumburgh-based helicopter Oscar Charlie was attending to a medical evacuation from Unst as a priority.

The casualty from Unst was airlifted to the Clickimin landing site in Lerwick and the helicopter then nipped over to the island, where the two youths were winched on board.

Scott Seeks Urgent Answers From Scottish Ambulance Service Regarding Unst Evacuations

Commenting after the coastguard helicopter was called to Unst for another overnight medical evacuation Tavish Scott MSP said:

“I have contacted the Scottish Ambulance Service as a matter of urgency to seek assurances that something will be done to rectify the current situation.

“Unst residents and GPs cannot live in fear that the coastguard will be otherwise engaged while someone suffers a critical medical emergency on the island and the correct equipment or resource is not there to help them. It is clear that, irrespective of the size of the population, better measures need to be in place before it’s too late.â€

Why didn't the Jigsaw helicopter swing into action here and go to Unst for the sick Patient and leave the Coastguard to lift the boys to safety?

  15. What's changed from the level of cover available previously?

The offshore jigsaw helicopter is contracted to the Ambulance Service to provide an air ambulance service within Shetland..

However, it is limited in when it can fly and where it can fly. (From Shetland Times) It cant fly at night for example.

So whats the point in having an air ambulance that cant fly at night.

At night, if there is an emergency, there is no ferry for the ambulance and the contracted air ambulance cant fly, hence why the coastguard helicopter has had to be called in to cover the short comings.

Tavish does have a point, why should they rely on the coastguard to pick up the slack when the Ambulance is paying for a service that the air ambulance cant deliver.

  16. Just heard on Radio Shetland that the editor of The Shetland Times has handed in his notice and will leave at the end of September.

I have to say the STimes has, in my opinion, been a disaster under this present editor so for me this is great news.

    :D
