khitajrah
Is anyone else going to this? I am very much looking forward to it!
Fjool
I've been invited, but not yet received my tickets. No idea whether I'll go to the thing on the 4th, or just the graduation part on the 5th.
khitajrah
Tickets?? I wasn't told about tickets. I'm not sure if there are any. I'm just going to the thing on the 4th, having not yet graduated. However, it is on the horizon!
swc123
Excuse my ignorance but what is happening on the 4th? I was aware of the graduation ceremony but not of anything on the 4th.
khitajrah
^ It's a bit of a get-together of previous and current OU students. The blurb on the Events Calendar says:The Open University is celebrating its 40th birthday in 2009. If you've ever been an Open University student we'd like to invite you to join us at an event for the whole OU community in Lerwick on Friday 4 September. To receive an invitation, email scotland-external-affairs@open.ac.uk or phone 0131 549 7935.
nautim
They sent out a couple of letters over the summer. I lost the return slip so just phoned the Edinburgh number. I presume they're just looking for an idea of numbers for catering.
khitajrah
Open University celebrates 40 years in Shetland The OU is to host the first degree ceremony of its kind in Shetland to mark 40 years of delivering higher education to the most distant Scottish isles. The Open University degree ceremony in Lerwick this Saturday 5 September will celebrate the size and scale of the OU’s delivery in Shetland. Over the past 40 years over 3,400 Shetlanders have studied with the OU, representing a student body equivalent to one fifth of Shetland’s adult population. Peter Syme, Director of The Open University in Scotland, said: “The scale on which Shetlanders have embraced higher education, and The Open University, over the past 40 years is remarkable. It demonstrates not only a desire to engage with higher education but also how essential it is to be able to access high quality higher education locally “The Open University has become an essential part of Shetland life, helping create a strong local skills base and an active, informed community. We have been able to support the training and development of people in all kinds of fields working across the isles: teachers, nurses, social care workers, engineers, people caring for the environment, delivering essential trades, and so on. There can be few people across Shetland whose lives have not been touched in some way either directly or indirectly by Open University study.†In any one year there are around 160 people studying with the OU in Shetland. This means that nearly one in every 100 adults in Shetland is studying with the OU at any one time; the highest participation rate for OU study anywhere in the UK.
