Hamefarin

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Hamefarin last week. I would like to congratulate all of the organisers who did a very good job during the two weeks. I only attended a couple of the events myself as I was busy socialising with family and friends most of the time. But I loved the dance and had a great time, then at the Final Fling, I could not believe that my little rock in the North Sea can produce such a high standard of musician and then cso many too. I loved all of the bands, but I was totally blown away by Fiddlers Bid!

Thanks again for such a lovely welcome to my homeland.

Strange why more buses weren't put on for flights actually arriving and departing from Sumburgh? We arrived 5 minutes after the bus departure time and would have had to wait ages for another?

This goes back to the time when British Airways decided to discontinue providing dedicated buses to connect with their flights at Sumburgh. I understand this was a cost cutting exercise. SIC decided that it would run buses at convenient times to connect with most flights but as the buses were also to serve the population of the South Mainland they would not be able to wait for delayed incoming flights. I think the hardship of waiting at an en-route bus stop on a winters day would be somewhat greater than having to wait for the next bus in a warm airport terminal.

  • 8 years later...

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me if/when the next Hamefarin might be ?

The last one was in 2010 and from the (scant) information that I've managed to find, they are only held every 25 years ?  Will I really have to wait until 2035 ?

Are there any 'smaller' hamefarin events held in Scalloway or elsewhere ?

I'd like to arrange to meet (in Shetland) other relations of Shetland descent, who live in the US and in England, and it would be great if this could be done  around some 'official' kind of event - Up Helly Aa or the Hamefarin, though the time of year that Up Helly Aa is held would make it difficult to visit that event.

Any comments ?
