  1. I've already given myself a talking to for taking this thread off topic, so I'll have no qualms about sternly admonishing you three Talk about "Air Travel Paranoia" or take it elsewhere. Thank you.
  2. That, my friend, is entirely possible. But it is also just a theory of the conspiracy flavoured kind, and I fear neither of us really know what the hell we're talking about....... So I'm going to moderate the both of us, and demand that we shut up about the Iraq/Iran war, which has absolutely nothing to do with the original title of this thread
  3. Aaaah, you are indeed a person of great wisdom and insight. Not a complete picture though Canute, the Soviet Union, France, China and the UK were all involved to some degree as well. Keep trying, you're heading in the right direction. Soon your blinkers will be cast aside for ever and your mind will be narrow no longer
  4. The Iran/Iraq War of 1980-1988, springs to mind. Not too many young, male Christians involved in that one, matey. No. Only the elderly, male "christians" who orchestrated the whole thing and supplied the weapons..............matey.
  5. When was the last time a muslim country was terrorised by anything other than a gang of thousands of young, male "christians"?
  6. No bother lastpubrunner. And you're right, Shetland based members would be better answering this. As an ex-pat, I'm perhaps not best qualified.
  7. Because tourists all disappear off home at the end of August. So who's going to keep it going through the winter months? Locals? I doubt it, Shetland locals have got their own lives to lead, customs and traditions to observe......and shopping to do As for other sustainable industries, I'm no expert, but there's a good debate along those lines going on here. Dive right in
  8. As deadly as rucksack carrying passengers on the London underground. Indeed. I travel on the tube in London regularly. I see people carrying rucksacks almost every time. Sometimes I carry one myself. And I'm still here to tell the tale
  9. Maybe resident Shetlanders do want all that stuff. They're the ones who have to live there after all A culture constructed for tourists won't last very long.
  10. Yeah, cos we all know how deadly those wooly-jumper wearing, clock watching types can be Self preservation, my a**e.
  11. I've got a vaguely gingerish beard. Definitely not hair though, that's kind of dark blond/light brown, whichever suits my mood at the time.
  12. Indeed. I hope it happens, just for the entertainment value alone

SUCCESS! Thanks for the advice guys, but it was just a flakey DVD drive that was the problem. I swapped it out with another one and fired it up no problem at all. I'll probably be back quite soon when I get stuck with my tinkering Cheers again.

I can't remember if I saw anything like that trout, and I'm home for the evening now, so I'll have to have a look for that when I'm back in at work tomorrow.

No. I don't get any text based choices to make. It has gone past that point a couple of times though, and I did think I had started the install. I entered my name and password and it set off to do its work. But it just sat and did nowt for about half an hour, so I pulled the plug.

It's having real trouble booting from the CD at all. A couple of times it has just come up "Missing operating sytem". But more often it hangs up at the point just after I've chosen to Startup/Install Ubuntu, when it's checking the system. It either justs hangs up, or on a couple of occasions I've had errors saying something about being unable to read certain memory sectors and also mentioning SQUASHFS........

If it's any consolation, you're not alone Ally. I've been trying to install Ubuntu 6.06 on an HP desktop machine at work all day, to no avail. The installer keeps hanging up, but at different points each time. I'm beginning to think I may have a duff CD drive. Oh well, I'm off to get the screw-driver out and try a different drive.
  18. It's already made several appearances on this thread.
  19. This article from the Sunday Herald says it ain't so ArrabiaTerra. It would appear that setting such a referendum is a matter reserved for Westminster, as are all constitutional changes.

I downloaded Ubuntu last night and have just tried running the trial thingy from the CD I burnt. I can't believe how complete it looks! It's got absolutely everything for a fully working home desktop setup. Ready to go. It's more complete "out of the box" than WinXP or MacOSX. I haven't actually installed it, or had a proper hock, so I'll reserve judgement for just now. But first impressions are very favourable. Also, it detected and configured all the hardware on my work laptop without any help from me. Everything!
  21. Double Nickels on the Dime by The Minutemen. I cannot overstate just how brilliant this album is. You must listen to it immediately. If any of you "engine room" type musicians out there think you're part of a tight rhythm section.......listen to Double Nickels, and prepare to be ashamed of how ridiculously slack you are in comparison to D. Boon, Mike Watt and the great George Hurley.

Cheers. I already have no idea what's going on, I can't wait til I come up against some real problems

Cheers trout. I'm going to download Ubuntu tonight I think. Just to get an idea of what I'm dealing with before I dive into Gentoo. I'll let you know how I get on.
