Muppet
It was one of the two socialists who are standing. Commonsense at last What he was proposing was a 14p cut in the mileage rate claimed by the 22 Councillors saving £9000 a year out of a budget of what, £70 million is it not? More gimmick than commonsense methinks!
BigMouth
It has little to do with money and more to do with environmental responsibility, or rather not encouraging irresponsibility. The albeit small saving is just a bonus!
Wheesht
Pay mileage rates to SIC employees at a rate inversely proportional to engine size. I only half heard it, but someone on Radio Shetland has suggested some sort of flat mileage rate on claims for SIC employees, to discourage driving large thirsty vehicles on SIC business when it is mostly unnecessary. Did anyone hear who it was? It was one of the two socialists who are standing. That will be the socilaists who thinks it is a good thing to give a nice fat cash Christmas bonus to all pensioners when many of them are loaded? Something wrong there surely? Muppet
Ok, it's late and call me sad for still sitting up watching the election results but.......... One thing i've noticed - Allan Wishart got more votes than any other candidate in Shetland and nearly twice as many as Sandy Cluness, the next nearest in Lerwick North. Surely that speaks volumes about the Bressay Bridge debacle! Will Sandy still insist on a bridge? Will Sandy still be a candidate for convenor? Intersting times ahead! JustMe
I have been thinking what I would like out new council to once they have finished with the business of deciding who does what job and I have come up with this. To require the Chief Executive to produce a complete list of all property owned by the council and its various trusts including details of what use that property is being put to while also producing a list of all property rented by the council and what use that is being put to. Perhaps for simplicity council houses occupied by tenants or having been empty for less than 3 months could just be listed as one total without any details. My reasoning is that everywhere I look the council seems to have new offices and I suspect that very few people within the council know exactly what is owned or leased or what is in fact surplus to requirements and that knowledge would equip the new council with enough information to plan ahead for acquisitions or disposals of property over the full term of this council.
